Even as the insurance industry is expected to pay out as much as $25 billion to cover claims from Hurricane Katrina, tens of thousands of homeowners and small businesses in areas hard-hit by the storm may end up footing their own rebuilding costs because they don't have federal flood insurance. In Mississippi, as few as one in five homes and businesses in the areas most at risk for flooding held flood-insurance policies as of June 30, while just less than half of such properties in Louisiana were covered, according to data from the federal National Flood Insurance Program. In New...

The war in Iraq is racing ahead of Jan Lang's good intentions. In 2003, around the time President Bush declared major combat operations to be over, Mrs. Lang and a group of military mothers pledged to provide a handmade, personalized quilt for the next of kin of every U.S. serviceman and woman killed in Iraq. It seemed like a manageable task when the death toll stood around 250. --Snip-- But she vows to keep quilting, inspired by those moments when a quilt reaches its intended recipient just when it's needed the most. You might not think so from listening to me, but I like to be liked. Not only that, I like my country to be liked around the world and it isn't. I wish President Bush would try to make this country less hated. He could do it if he set his mind to it. To begin with, we should change our attitude toward the United Nations. Bailey, who defended O.J. Simpson and other high-profile clients, was accused of mishandling stock owned by a drug defendant. The Supreme Court refused in May to review a Florida Supreme Court decision that barred Bailey from practicing law in that state. Bailey also lost his law license in Massachusetts after a review of the Florida decision. AP-ES-06-24-02 1141EDT
