  • Kagan, Obama, and the Thumb of Empathy

In the British comedy show “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” a cartoon God would often send a giant foot down from Heaven to squash malefactors. Some see God’s justice in the non-cartoon world to be similarly imposed, with Him smiting the unjust, albeit minus the giant foot. The Old Testament gives examples that fit this model, but things get complicated upon closer inspection. Was God a little indiscriminate in His actions? While the Israelites were the Chosen People, there must have been a few virtuous souls among the various Runners-Up Peoples that the Israelites, with God’s help, destroyed. One such was an e-mail written by François Houle, Provost of the University of Ottawa, to Ann Coulter in anticipation of her giving a speech on his campus. Its content was publicized by FiveFeetofFury.com [1] and others, including columnist Mark Steyn [2]....

Perhaps your day hasn’t gone so well: the dog woke you up two hours early, to alert you to the presence of a robin on the lawn. You’ve been drafted into the army of the “Downsized.” Your daughter switched her major from Computer Science to Fine Art. But no matter how bad a day you’re having, chances are that Gaspar Llamazares is having a worse one. A politician in Spain, Llamazares awoke one morning to find that the FBI had used his photo to illustrate what an “older” Osama bin Laden might look like. Bad enough for the FBI to...

Garrison Keillor has always struck me as mean-spirited, wrapping a fundamentally smug and condescending world view in a fondant of cutesy-poo irony. Now, thanks to Glenn Reynolds‘ posting of Marissa Brostoff’s TABLET MAGAZINE column, “Garrison Keillor Doesn’t Like Jews Writing Christmas Songs,” others may also reassess their opinion of NPR’s favorite son. Brostoff describes Keillor’s recent Baltimore Sun column, in which he complains about “all those lousy holiday songs by Jewish guys that trash up the malls every year, Rudolph and the chestnuts and the rest of that dreck. Did one of our guys write ‘Grab your loafers, coma along...

SARAH PALIN, UNBOUND by Laurie Morrow and Ed Morrow Striving mightily to stay at the head of the torch- and pitchfork-bearing mob pursuing the Monster Palin, Maureen Dowd, in her latest column, has added a new charge to the standard assaults on the Alaska Governor. On top of being too folksy, too pretty, too dull-witted, and too conservative, Palin is crazy. Miss Dowd knows this is true because she read it in Vanity Fair. Using a fashion magazine notorious for its anti-Republican bent as her medical authority, Dowd cattily describes Palin as “one nutty puppy.” She diagnoses the Governor as...

Suppose you were standing on the stairs outside the New York Public Library, beside Leo Astor or Leo Lenox, who gaze with serene, marbled regard across the exuberant pandemonium of Midtown Manhattan. Suppose, also, you were to ask the panoply of patrons passing by to name the fictional character who best captures the essence of capitalism. Chances are, the names you’d hear most often would be of miserly or unscrupulous figures—Dickens’ unredeemed Ebenezer Scrooge, for example, or Gordon (“Greed is Good!”) Gecko, from the movie Wall Street. Even in December, no one heading up to the Main Reading Room is...

Did Joe Biden violate the Logan Act — a felony? Laurie Morrow • September 24, 2008 • Uncategorized In his speech today, Joe Biden admitted to meeting with President Mikhail Saakashvili of the Republic of George, and of negotiating specific details concerning U.S. foreign policy with the head of a foreign nation. In so doing, has Biden admitted violating U.S. law, specifically 18 U.S.C. § 953 (2004), commonly known as the Logan Act? The Logan Act prohibits “[a]ny citizen of the United States, whoever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commerces or carries...

TOP 10 REASONS McCAIN’S VP SHOULD BE ALASKA GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN Laurie Morrow • August 28, 2008 0:57am • Uncategorized Edit This REASON #10: PALIN’S YOUTH COMPLEMENTS McCAIN’S EXPERIENCE For months, Obama’s supporters have touted the Senator’s youthfulness as one of his qualifications for office (a strategy they’re apt to scale back on, given their selection of a Vice President nearly as old as McCain). If youth is seen as a plus by voters, then Alaska Governor Sarah Palin fits the bill. At 44, she is 3 years younger than Barack Obama, and the youngest person ever to be elected...
