Searched and didn't see this posted yet: Natalie Maines may have donned the T-shirt, but it was Toby Keith who wore the pants at the Academy of Country Music awards, held Wednesday (May 21) in Las Vegas. With eight nominations, Keith won the entertainer of the year trophy, his first victory in that category. However, he apparently left the ceremony early, so Vince Gill and host Reba McEntire -- fellow Oklahomans -- accepted on his behalf. Perhaps Keith was on a flight to Austin, Texas, to put a boot in Maines’ you-know-what. Beamed in from a Dixie Chicks concert in...

I have been reading the book, The Hunt for Bin Laden, about the SF "initiative" vs. Taliban/AQ in Afghanistan. I recommend it, although in parts it seems rushed and disjointed. Reading a portion today on the train home from DC, one portion stands out (p. 244): "There were three mottos in play: Who Dares Wins, the words of the winged dagger of the SAS; Strength and Honor, the credo by which TF DAGGER would operate; and Speed, Surprise, and Violence of Action, the modus operandi of Delta Force.

It's regrettable that so soon after the tragic loss of seven heroic lives in the Columbia space shuttle disaster I am preoccupied with the prospect of even greater loss of innocent life in Iraq because the government there doesn't seem to get it. Just three days after President Bush's eloquent State of the Union address, Iraqi U.N. Ambassador Mohammed Aldouri was given a golden opportunity to speak directly to the American people and to our government when he was interviewed by Ray Suarez on PBS. Boy, did he blow it. Suarez asked all the right questions, and had Aldouri given...
  • NASA Points Left, the Media Right: Whose budget is to blame for the Columbia disaster?

On This Week with George Stephanopoulos, the erstwhile Clinton spin doctor asked former astronaut Sally Ride where NASA would be focusing its investigation of the Columbia disaster. Ride said that during liftoff it appeared on video as though some of the heat shielding from the shuttle had fallen off, striking the shuttle in the area of the wing on the port side. Naturally, she said, "we'll be looking pretty closely at that left wing." Unfortunately, it seems that Stephanopoulos and most of the other Sunday-morning talk hosts focused their attention on the implied blame of the "right wing." Not the...

Washington, D.C., January 10, 2003—Today, Former Education Secretary and co-director of Empower America William J. Bennett sent a memo to the White House and the U.S. Congress urging them to embrace a true civil rights agenda based on colorblind policies and equal opportunity for all. Bennett advises that in the coming year a civil rights agenda should be crafted around three action items: • Ending the double standard of racial preferences in higher education admissions: The Bush Administration and Members of Congress should immediately file an amicus brief with the Supreme Court on behalf of the plaintiffs in Grutter v....
