The preceding information has been confirmed by telephone from Tlalteloco by Narco News/Other Journalism correspondent Roberto Chan Kin Ortega and by Hermann Bellinghausen of the Mexico City newspaper La Jornada. I was flipping through the channels and stopped on what looks like live coverage of riots in Mexico (Texcoco?) on a Spanish network. My Time Warner lineup says my channel 50 is Univision. On the screen there is a TV 4 up in one corner. Do any Spanish speaking FReepers have access to this channel?I have seen scenes of beatings in the streets, lines of riot police, groups on tops of buildings waving machetes. . . very scary stuff.

You may have heard a neighbor say that crime seems to be up and word is it's Katrina evacuees who are responsible. But is that true? In southwest Houston there is block after block of big apartment complexes. They house the city's highest concentration of Katrina evacuees, and they are ground zero for a rise in violent crime. Southwest Houston has a large concentration of Katrina evacuees. "Things have gotten pretty bad out here," said city councilmember M.J. Khan. Long-time residents say its gotten scary. The residents were terrified, but the interviews we have were done back in June of...

With Christmas around the corner, a group of Katrina evacuees worry they can't give the holiday to their kids. Hauling home a Christmas tree is at least a $30 cab ride. For Sheryl Lee whose New Orleans home was destroyed, her brand new house is a "dream come true," she said as she wiped tears from her eyes. Yet for all that it offers, it is also a trap. "No way to get to a shopping or nothing," Lee said. The Clarke Springs subdivision, with its neat rows of humble homes, sits outside the beltway. The nearest Metro bus stop...

Activists sidestep FEMA bureaucracy to broadcast relief info to Katrina survivorsAfter a week of wading through FEMA red tape, media activists finally fired up a low-power radio station to serve Hurricane Katrina evacuees still living in the Houston Astrodome and adjacent Reliant convention center. KAMP (Katrina Aftermath Media Project) 95.3 FM, Dome City Radio went live at noon today, broadcasting from a donated Airstream trailer in the Astrodome’s parking lot. The station had been stalled after local FEMA officials refused to allow access to the Astrodome, citing “security concerns.” But on Monday, the FCC granted KAMP a new temporary license...

(7/04/05 - HOUSTON) — A suspected drunk driver plowed through part of tonight's Freedom over Texas celebration near downtown Houston. An SUV was headed down Allen Parkway near Bagby around 4am when he allegedly ran into two of the Chevy NASCAR cars on display on the street. Police believe the driver was drinking. I went to a local sporting goods store last Wednesday to purchase a SIG P229. I did not get and immediate PROCEED from NICS. I can think of two possible reasons - I know there is someone in Texas with my exact name with some violent criminal history, and I have a misdemeanor conviction for illegal carrying 3 1/2 years ago (not a dis-qualifier). Either may have set off the alarms for a deeper check. The last dealer purchase I made was before the Brady Law. This dealer told me that if he hasn't heard from NICS in 7 -...
