Activists sidestep FEMA bureaucracy to broadcast relief info to Katrina survivors
After a week of wading through FEMA red tape, media activists finally fired up a low-power radio station to serve Hurricane Katrina evacuees still living in the Houston Astrodome and adjacent Reliant convention center.
KAMP (Katrina Aftermath Media Project) 95.3 FM, Dome City Radio went live at noon today, broadcasting from a donated Airstream trailer in the Astrodomes parking lot.
The station had been stalled after local FEMA officials refused to allow access to the Astrodome, citing security concerns.
But on Monday, the FCC granted KAMP a new temporary license for a 6-watt transmitter located right outside the Dome.
It made our job a lot more complicated because we had to figure out a way to get the signal though walls of concrete and steel without interfering with other radio stations in the area, said Renee Feltz, news director of KPFT, the local Pacifica station, which partnered with Houston Indymedia and the Prometheus Radio Project to put the station on air and distribute donated radios.

Ping. . .
This is a weird left-wing project. The telephone-tower guy who was beheaded by terrorists in Iraq about a year ago (?) when he was attempting to "communicate" with the terrorists worked for them, and IIRC his family was instrumental in establishing the project. It receives grants from every lefty loony foundation in the world. Just what the evacuees really, really needed.
Actually, the evacuees will probably ignore it, but I feel bad for the volunteers who will have to listen to it. Imagine innocently coming out to do good for your fellow man and finding yourself subjected to that raving left-wing propaganda all day.
So in other words, they'll drone on 24/7 "It's Bush's fault... It's Bush's fault... It's Bush's fault..."
If you want to be represented, start your own broadcast project. There is no reason conservatives can't put something like that together.
Thanks for the reminder, by the way, about that weird story involving the guy who went to Iraq. I never knew what to think about that, and it is interesting to know that these folks are with his organization.
That must be why they chose FM.
AM signals have a hard time just getting through sheetrock.
Yeah I'm sure the average Astrodome refugee is politically in tune and is going through Air America withdrawl. LOL!
Ooops , I overlooked "volunteer."
Its obviously going to be anti-Bush, America, Republican, Conservative, Roberts, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, et. al.
The balance to be...
Hug a tree, beg for more, save the whales, burn down a SUV dealership, etc etc etc...
I do know a way to jam the signal...But they're not worth it...Nor would it help...

opps...I got "spawnofeaker" double post-itis...
Actually, we conservatives already have radio representation and it's commercially successful and does not need to be supported by foundations! The loser left has to be "funded," on the other hand.
I was curious about the Prometheus Project and read a fair amount about it at the time of the beheading. One thing that always impresses me is how these things are all tied together; the same names keep surfacing in these dubious connections.
Thanks.
I'm about 4.5 miles away, as the radio waves fly, and couldn't get it on two different radios here.
Good chance the F word will be used within the first ten minutes of broadcasting.
OMG! Is this the same Indymedia out of Washington? Those guys aren't outside the Dome, they're off the planet!
When I go to work tomorrow I'll try an tune in.
