In 2000—a year that witnessed the antigun Million Mom March in Washington, D.C, as well as surging membership in the pro-gun National Rifle Association (NRA)—the issue of gun control was at the forefront of American political debate. Two facts define the poles of the controversy. On the one hand is the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The exact meaning of the Second Amendment has been debated, The rest of the ...

Paul Harvey said that someone had designated "the two dumbest" senators in the U.S. One of the named, promptly held a news conference to deny it!!??

Americans, We've been saturated with the horrible images of September 11, yet now the images are starting to fade as we get on with our lives. But, we can't afford to forget. Our enemy is still out there. He wants us complacent. He wants to catch us cold again. The coming war on terrorism may well last for years. The cost in lives, both military and civilian, will likely be very high. The gains may not be very spectacular or heartening. We'll naturally tend to forget and grow weary of the fight; We'll shrink from the pain and question what ...

When the state’s concealed weapons law was passed in 1996, critics feared gunslingers would be strolling the streets of South Carolina, but authorities say the program has worked effectively. The rest of the article

South Carolina's Attorney General, Charlie Condon, has received considerable media attention in recent weeks, including an appearance on "The O'Reilly Factor." This has led many, especially those living outside South Carolina, to view him positively. Some, in fact, see him as a desirable candidate for governor. One supportive of many of the views expressed on FreeRepublic. But there are some gun rights advocates in South Carolina who see him as a weasel who has ducked questions about current gun laws to avoid generating controversy and possibly alienating voters. What do you think? Read the documentation by GrassRoots and the earlier ...

Remember Gary? He's the fellow in rural South Carolina who State Farm cancelled after a thirty-year relationship, when the company's agent found out Gary occasionally went shooting in a ravine behind his house. Gary tried to work out an arrangement that would allow him to keep his State Farm coverage, yet still allow him to shoot on his 13½ acres. But State Farm wasn't interested in any arrangements, and wasn't interested in trying to work things out. State Farm wouldn't budge. The rest of the article.

By now you have each probably heard reports of the Connecticut police officer who had his homeowner policy cancelled after listing a Mossberg 500 on his Prudential insurance application. As a longtime Prudential customer, I asked the company to confirm their actions and clarify their policy. I sent you each a copy of their response... and mine to them in return. As you'll see it didn't take the concerns GRSC voiced to The State newspaper over my shooting range to manifest themselves into something much more dangerous to our freedoms. Gary J. Atkinson _________ Dear Mr. Atkinson, This is ...

The State endorses Bush for president This newspaper's editorial board endorses Texas Gov. George W. Bush to be the next president of the United States. This should come as little surprise to anyone who read our endorsement of Mr. Bush in the Republican primary in February. Our reasoning this time is similar, although there are some differences. Gary Atkinson is a good neighbor, even though his nearest neighbor lives hundreds of feet away. He makes his home in rural Chapin, South Carolina on thirteen hilly, mostly wooded acres, along with his wife Lisa, sons Tom and Yates, two horses, three yard dogs, and "too many cats to count" as Gary puts it. "Somebody's got to take in the homeless animals" he explains. "If not, well…." His voice trails off. No need to describe the fate of stray animals in a sparsely populated area. Rest of story

Guns Don't Cause Crime, Criminals Do Patrick D. Nolan, Ph.D. The argument that the simple availability of handguns increases the rate of gun violence and violent crime has received yet another blow from a study by two researchers at Florida International University: Lisa Stolzenberg and Stewart D'Alessio. Their article in the highly esteemed sociology journal Social Forces (June 2000), reports that although illegal gun availability is associated with an increase in the rates of violent crime, gun crime, and youth crime, legal gun availability is not. They note that this important distinction between legal and illegal gun availability has been ...

Excuse the vanity post, but I am exasperated! Will someone who has connections with the campaign/media please ask the Gore campaign to define a "working" family?! Tony Snow and a few others have danced around it, but no one has bluntly asked and refused to be satisfied with a bland generality. If Gore is fighting for "working" families, then those who are being fought FOR and AGAINST need to know who they are before the election. I suspect that many of us who work, and who are families, are not considered "working families" by Gore. Please make them define the ...
