This rates a WOW! Not only that but after looking for more info about it, Toshiba has improved and refined the design to a version called L4S so that "the resulting L4S reactor has fewer components and is significantly more compact, for the same power output, than the 4S reactor considered above." Info from NEW ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES: A POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR MICRO-NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY web page.

If a number of these improved plants were installed in California instead of those based on natural gas, it could amount to a massive tax cut and would be a rocket boost to the economic potential of the state. Natural gas prices would drop and that would help the other regions of the US too.

Looking at its compact size, I keep thinking of the ones used in aircraft carriers which are virtual cities of 5,000 moving all over the world. To help sell it here, I think that US Energy dept should use regular sailors from the carriers to vouch for its safety and note that in its 50 year operating span, the carrier will only have to be refueled one time.

If they standardize and mass produce these mini reactors, I wonder if they can get energy costs down even further so that it would dramatically change the economic landscape for the US and the world.

The UK "deregulated" energy in a way that favored natural gas plants while they strangled British Energy's nuclear operation (which supplies 25% of electricity)with excessive regulation and taxes.

The US is in a similar situation where natural gas has been used to produce greater amounts of electricity when the best use for it is in direct heating. Now that prices for natural gas are increasing dramatically, public should demand a sensible and long term energy policy.

One of the consequences that should be becoming apparent, is that any major nation that does not use nuclear energy to a significant degree for the long term will cease to be competitive force in the world.

When these cars start rolling out in a decade they will probably be using fuels like liquid methanol as a hydrogen carrier.

    Regarding cause of Hindenberg fire:

Hydrogen Didn’t Cause Hindenburg Fire, UCLA Engineer, Former NASA Researcher Find

It was not hydrogen that caused the disastrous fire aboard the famous Hindenburg zeppelin, according to a UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science Professor and a former NASA researcher.Hindenburg

Contrary to popular belief — and the findings of two official investigations — the material used to coat the "skin" of the airship, not hydrogen, was the cause of the disaster, said William D. Van Vorst, professor emeritus of chemical engineering at UCLA and Addison Bain, former manager, Hydrogen Programs Kennedy Space Center, NASA.

And if you get into a wreck with anything bigger than a roller skate, you're going to come out losing that fight ;)

It will also knock out any Segway fanatics I bet and instead of Segway commuter lanes, by demand there will be fuel cell vehicle (FCV) lanes.

Not only that, but in a electrical blackout, your FCV will provide emergency power to your home for a couple of days. So it is like having a mobile generator for powering the technologies of the 21st century.

The teachers unions are going after the board and St. Hope because they know the type of charter schools envisioned by Kevin Johnson have the potential to destroy their pernicious grip on California's education system and ultimately save taxpayers billions of dollars.

It is no surprise that they shopped for a judge that earlier made rulings against St. Hope that had no basis in California's charter school law. The judge should join Gray Davis in the lengthy recall line that will be needed to set California in the right direction.

Schwarzenegger will find it convenient to visit the charter schools in Sacramento and help Kevin Johnson spread his message of educational hope throughout California and beyond.

Schwarzenegger and Bush have to implement some energy-water strategery for the west to set the foundation for long term economic growth.

Bush can provide Schwarzenegger with a hefty political shield against environmental lobby by buying oil leases for offshore drilling permits as he did for Florida. Bush can also provide leases on federal/military property for new nuclear energy and desalinated water development.

In turn, Arnold can make his case to California that new nuclear energy and desalination plants are necessary to create an attractive home and business climate with competitive energy and water rates. Since one of his advisors, Pete Wilson, warned last year that California faces a water crisis that could dwarf the energy crisis, it is an issue that has to be confronted early in his administration.

It's because he figured Arnold would not run for governor in 2002 and he could afford to reveal what was spewing from Gray's gangsters in Sacramento.

Of course, if he had the premonition of a successful recall in 2003, then he would have thrown the article in the trash.

Fingerprints of the Gray Davis preemptive political hit campaign. To answer question about genesis of motivation for writer John Connolly's Schwarzenegger smear article, it turns out he is the same writer who sent private detectives to start a scorched earth campaign against Clinton opponents:

According to the Washington Post, Disney may be backing off off a new book by John Connolly that allegedly digs into the sex lives of Clinton's critics. The angst arose after Matt Drudge obtained a manuscript and reported that Connolly had written: "There are no less than six gays involved in the [Lewinsky] case. Two of the 'elves', and three of Starr's young male proteges were gay..."

Says Drudge: "Connolly plans to name some names. Using the term 'fag hag' to describe Lewinsky player Lucianne Goldberg, Connolly told the Drudge Report that he has an "iron clad contract" with Talk/Miramax . . . Connolly has been spending the cash advanced to him by Talk to explore the personal backgrounds of Clinton scandal insiders.

Best-selling author and syndicated columnist Ann Coulter, who comes under the Connolly microscope, said on Monday that she was "harassed" after Connolly brought in a private investigator to dig into her background. 'The guy began a program of harassment by calling me at home 6 times a day until I changed my number, sending me flowers, and hiring a private investigator to look into my personal life. I have a copy of the letter his PI sent to an ex-boyfriend of mine, stating that he was hired by John Connolly to look into me.' . . . 'I will not be bullied around,' warns Connolly, 'by threats or lawsuits or anything else.' Hide your cigarettes under the bed, Snow White. A scorched earth alert has been issued."

The dirty fingerprints of the Clintons are superimposed on the fingerprints of Gray Davis.

If you think the argument is weak, wait until the lifetime politician runs in a general election for any other office. He will be vaporized for his political subterfuge by the Democrats. As his Indian gaming benefactors like to say: you can bet on it.

Sorry - thought Arnold was the master of the crossover vote. Tom's the right wing crazies.

A simple test of whether most people believe Tom is influenced or supported by "right wing crazies" is to have them read the comments and writings of his closest advisor John Stoos. Stoos dreams of a state and society that disregards the US Constitution and institutes local boards that creates laws of, by and for "right wing crazies" to the detriment of everyone else.

If that were not contemptible enough, the lifetime politician made sure taxpayers supported John Stoos with their money. As the supposed man of principle, that fact should be in every "Tax Fighter" ad that is aired by his Indian gaming friends.

Anyone can get a sense of Arnold Schwarzenegger's core values by the reflections of his youth as recounted by his Jewish mentor:

Alfred Gerstl, the man who would mentor Schwarzenegger, was born between the two world wars, the son of a Jewish father, with a grandfather who was a cantor in Brooklyn, and an Austrian Catholic mother who converted to Judaism for her wedding. Alfred would eventually become president of the upper house of the Austrian parliament, but in the late 1950s and throughout the '60s, he ran a club for student athletes in Graz.

Gerstl said he took it upon himself to teach the young men, Arnold among them, about a history his country was denying and about the dangers of anti-Semitism and fascism.

"I gathered the young people together for sports, but the condition was they had to listen," Gerstl, 80, said in an interview at his apartment in Graz. "Arnold was very inquisitive. He always wanted to know why we were against the Nazis. He always understood the need to protect the weak."

In after-school sessions at his home, Gerstl would play records of operatic music and tell Arnold that the beautiful voices he heard were those of persecuted Jews. Gerstl, his son Karl, Arnold and others would have long talks about sports and life and, occasionally, politics.

It is unclear how much of that early indoctrination stuck. Schwarzenegger, who left Austria for good in 1968, has said he "hated" the arts as a child and retained youthful prejudices until spending time in a more open, progressive United States.

Gerstl is fond of remembering a brave schoolmaster in Graz in the early 1960s who arranged a field trip to Mauthausen, the main Nazi-era concentration camp in Austria that was preserved as a museum.

Reactionary groups attacked the man for airing Austria's dirty laundry. Although Schwarzenegger did not go on the field trip, he was among the youths who staged a counter-demonstration in defense of the headmaster, according to Gerstl.

Now, Schwarzenegger's many admiring friends in Thal and Graz hold up these anecdotes as evidence that he could not possibly be anti-Semitic.

When you consider how anti-semitic Austria was for hundreds of years, it is extremely remarkable that Arnold took part in a demonstration in support of the headmaster who wanted to educate his students about Nazi atrocities. That says more about him than anything the New York or LA Times could ever say with their "Puke-litzer Prize" journalists.
