The Colombian government has announced a raft of measures to control its growing population of invasive hippos—descendants of animals introduced to the country by the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. Hippos are native to Africa, but in the 1980s, Escobar smuggled four of the animals into Colombia, keeping them at his luxurious country estate, Hacienda Nápoles, in the municipality of Puerto Triunfo—located east of Medellin—which featured a private zoo. Amaun Brandell Gilbert, 20, has been charged with murder, a first-degree felony, in the death of Richard Xavier Solomon, 24, on July 30 in Killeen. Gilbert was arrested on Aug. 3 by the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force in Copperas Cove and is currently being held on a $1 million bond in the Bell County Jail. A runaway cow was spotted sprinting down Interstate 75 in Holly, Michigan on Sunday before it was wrangled and returned to greener pastures. Michigan State Police shared a clip of the dramatic pursuit of the farm animal, which involved wranglers on horses and four-wheelers, on Twitter.
