On the October 13 CNN "Newsroom" program, European political editor Robin Oakley pontificated to Sens. McCain and Obama on how the U.S. can be more liked by people in Europe: "While we're on the symbolism, let me remind you how many Europeans see U.S. voters -- as a trigger-happy bunch with a Bible in one hand and a rifle in the other.... Does either of you senators have any serious plans to reduce the number of guns available in the U.S. or even dare to suggest it? That really would impress the Europeans, that you stand for change."

This was written before 1885 by Samuel Butler in his book The Way of All Flesh "In those days the snow lay longer and drifted deeper in the lanes than it does now, and the milk was sometimes brought in frozen in winter, and we were taken down into the back kitchen to see it. I suppose there are rectories up and down the country now where the milk comes in frozen sometimes in winter, and the children go down to wonder at it, but I never see any frozen milk in London, so I suppose the winters are warmer...

MONTERREY, Mexico — Two unknown assailants attacked the U.S. Consulate General in this northern metropolis early Sunday with gunfire and a grenade that did not detonate, authorities said. No one was injured in the attack. Six .45-caliber shells were found at the scene. The shots struck at a sharp angle to the consulate's front gate and their impact appeared mostly to be absorbed or deflected by the black steel fence in front of the building. But some shots hit the building and punctured a sign that tells visitors they are subject to search before entering. Authorities revealed no motive for...

A recent Republican campaign ad sarcastically described as Barack Obama's "one accomplishment" his supporting a bill to promote sex education in kindergarten. During an interview of a Republican spokesman, Tom Brokaw of NBC News replayed that ad and asked if that was something serious to be discussed in a presidential election campaign. It was a variation on an old theme about getting back to "the real issues," just as Brokaw's question was a variation on an increasingly widespread tendency among journalists to become a squad of Obama avengers, instead of reporters. Does it matter if Barack Obama is for sex...

In recent months, [written in 2003] the nation's two largest mortgage finance lenders have come under increasing scrutiny at the hands of Congress, the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The Federal National Mortgage Association, nicknamed Fannie Mae, and the Federal Home Mortgage Corporation, nicknamed Freddie Mac, have operated since 1968 as government sponsored enterprises (GSEs). This means that, although the two companies are privately owned and operated by shareholders, they are protected financially by the support of the Federal Government. These government protections include access to a line of credit through the U.S. Treasury, exemption from...
