BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- A Massachusetts man pleaded guilty Tuesday to beheading a man and burying the head in a Florida park. Eugene McCollom, 40, was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in prison on manslaughter charges in the 2001 killing of John "Jackie" Leyden. Leyden, who knew McCollom from Alcoholics Anonymous, was stabbed several times and beaten with a metal pipe. No motive was given. McCollom told investigators where to find Leyden's head.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Sweet drinks -- whether Kool-Aid with sugar or all-natural apple juice -- seem to raise the risk of pudgy preschoolers getting fatter, new research suggests. That may come as a surprise to parents who pride themselves on seeking out fruit drinks with no added sugar. "Juice is definitely a part of this," said lead researcher Jean Welsh of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (CNN) -- Gunfire broke out in the city of Banda Aceh, while a deadly blast shook an area where relief workers are helping out in Sri Lanka, raising concern about the safety of foreign aid groups helping tsunami survivors. The gunfire, which was heard near the U.N. headquarters in the provincial capital of Aceh, Indonesia, before dawn on Sunday, woke aid workers who have poured into the city, but hurt no one.

Serious Christians have always been ambivalent about how society celebrates Christmas. It’s hard to get children to focus on the birth of Christ, and what that means, when the arrival of Santa Claus—and all that that portends in the way of hectic getting and spending—is imminent. The quiet subtleties of "Silent Night" are no match for the clang of "Jingle Bells." Now it appears that even the secularized Christmas that Santa represents is too sectarian for some keepers of the nation’s public spaces and commercial places. Wherever you look, references to Christmas have been suppressed in favor of a featureless...

Rush is on here in Penna at 12 noon, EST; Savage comes on at 6pm, EST. I'm frequently either on the road, or with customers here at my nursery, and sometimes miss part or all of their streamed broadcasts. If anyone does record them, or anyother talk shows, what software do you like and use? My computer's TV tuner card/ (www.hauppauge.com) doesn't works for streamed audio; only for the cable modem. I went to ZDnet.com's downloads page, and found a boatload of players and recorders, but most seem to be for mp3/ mpeg files. I've downloaded UltraPlayer (www.ultraplayer.com) and upgraded...

As George W. Bush and John Kerry gird for what could be a nail-biter in Pennsylvania, state and local officials are under pressure to ensure the votes are counted properly and without the controversies that jolted Florida four years ago. “If the scenario that happened in Florida in 2000 happened in Pennsylvania, it would have been far worse,” said Barry Kauffman, executive director of Common Cause/Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania has no system for an automatic statewide recount in close races and no legally binding standards for what constitutes a valid vote on a disputed ballot. Lawmakers are seriously considering bills for both,...

Top Democrats slapped back Sunday at a remark by House Speaker Dennis Hastert that al Qaeda leaders want Sen. John Kerry to beat President Bush in November. At a campaign rally Saturday in his Illinois district with Vice President Dick Cheney, Hastert said al Qaeda "would like to influence this election" with an attack similar to the train bombings in Madrid days before the Spanish national election in March. When a reporter asked Hastert if he thought al Qaeda would operate with more comfort if Kerry were elected, the speaker said, "That's my opinion, yes."

Every candidate for public office probably has some excess baggage to carry around that he’d rather not have. With Senator John Kerry, it’s undoubtedly his anti-Vietnam War activism that followed his heroic naval service in Vietnam. John Kerry and I were shipmates in the guided missile cruiser USS Gridley (CG-21) in 1967 and 1968. He served as First Lieutenant, the officer in charge of the deck division, and I was Executive Officer, or second in command. I remember him as a serious and intelligent young ensign, seemingly mature beyond his years. The skipper and I were mightily impressed with him...

WASHINGTON -- Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan is defending the three rounds of tax cuts that President George W. Bush has pushed through Congress. He told the House Financial Services Committee Wednesday those cuts prevented the economy from falling into an even deeper recession. At the same time, he warned that Congress must pay close attention to the long-term consequences of its spending and tax decisions to keep rising budget deficits from hurting the potential for growth. ... Speaking in York, Charles Moose told police and others how his department approached the issue. By SHAWN LEDINGTON Daily Record/Sunday News Thursday, July 1, 2004 Charles Moose, former Montgomery County, Md., police chief, said police should openly address inquiries about racial profiling. Much of the battleground that community residents and police were on regarding racial profiling and whether it exists may have been skipped over Wednesday night when a nationally recognized police officer spoke to a small crowd at Crispus Attucks Community Center. Though many of the county's movers and shakers — including lawmakers, commissioners and city council members —...
