Buchanan © 2006 Creators Syndicate Inc. When there is no solution, there is no problem, observed James Burnham, the former Trotskyite turned Cold War geostrategist. Burnham's insight came again to mind as President Bush ended his meeting with Ehud Olmert by announcing that the Israeli prime minister had brought with him some "bold ideas" for peace. And what bold ideas might that be?...

Mean It Voters want sincerity. If they can't get it, they'll settle for simplicity. Thursday, June 8, 2006 12:01 a.m. EDT A thought today about complexity and politics. The American people right now are not in a mood to trust any political plan, proposal or policy that seems complicated--highly involved, technical, full of phased-in elements and glide paths and Part C's. . . Why? Because they think--they assume, at this point, reflexively--that slithery, slippery professional politicians are using and inventing complications to obfuscate and confuse. . . . This, I think, is the essential problem with Congress's immigration proposals. All...

:08 A.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much, Luis. Thanks for your introduction. Right before we came in, I said, Luis, how's your school doing? See, I got to first know Luis when I went into inner-city Philadelphia, and he said, I'm starting a school. I said, how's your school doing? He said, "Oh, pretty good." He said, "Last year we had 69 of the 70 graduates from our school go to college." (Applause.) Luis' school is doing better than pretty good, it's doing great. And we hold out hope to some kid, you know, that it's amazing what...

Bush task force to assist aliens By Stephen Dinan THE WASHINGTON TIMES June 8, 2006 OMAHA, Neb. -- President Bush yesterday announced the creation of a task force to expand English, civics and history lessons as he pushes his plan for longtime illegal aliens to gain a path to citizenship. He said the government must take an active role in assimilation, a move he called critical both for the nation and for those who have entered its borders.

The much-criticized claim about “jobs Americans won’t do” seems to have left the president’s vocabulary. But though opponents of illegal immigration call the jobs claim a myth, the network news media have adopted it as an argument that needed addressing. “The American people are the ones hiring these people in many cases to do jobs they don’t want to do,” NBC’s Matt Lauer reminded his “Today” guest on May 1. “Few people question the ability of illegal immigrants to work hard and, according to labor statistics, work cheap on jobs most Americans are unwilling to do,” said CBS’s Byron Pitts...

While the White House argues with the Heritage Foundation over how many new immigrants will be minted by the administration’s immigration plan, and Congress debates how many miles of fencing they should fund along the Mexican border, no on is paying attention to the real immigration scandal. If left unattended, this one could cost the lives of millions of Americans, not just their livelihoods. Even as we speak, tens of thousands of illegals from terrorist-sponsoring states are roaming the streets of America, according to a stunning new report from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General. Although the...

The anti-illegal movement is growing in strength and political power in the shadow of the Senate amnesty atrocity, translating into election victories as recent primaries evidenced: Herndon, VA, Nebraska, and Brian Bilbray in California all saw winning campaigns against losing candidates running on support for illegals. Francine Busby's defeat at the hands of Brian Bilbray (for Duke Cunningham's CA-50 seat) was especially sweet since Sen McCainiac----prime supporter of the Senate amnesty atrocity----cancelled a fund-raiser for Bilbray b/c of the latter's anti-amnesty postion. We'll need Brian Bilbray out there when McCainiac tries for 2008. I hope Bilbray is vengeful -- and...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Senate committee chairman warned of a "constitutional confrontation" with the Bush administration Wednesday over its domestic surveillance program, threatening to subpoena administration officials or phone company executives in a congressional review. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter publicly complained about the Bush administration's refusal to cooperate with his panel Tuesday and sent a stinging letter to Vice President Dick Cheney after learning Cheney had lobbied other Republicans on his committee without his knowledge. "I'm not looking for courtesy," the Pennsylvania Republican told CNN. "What I'm looking for is judicial review of wiretaps, which is the tradition...

(AP) WASHINGTON Rejecting an argument being made by some conservatives in his own party, President Bush said Thursday that the idea that the United States could force millions of illegal immigrants to return home "ain't gonna work." Bush told a gathering of Hispanic leaders that the immigration system is broken and Congress needs to pass "commonsense" reform that strengthens the border while allowing more foreigners in to work temporarily and giving those who sneaked in years ago a chance to become citizens.

As Carole King sang thirty years ago, “It’s too late, Baby.” She was referring to romance, but in this context it is too late for Team Bush to recapture the loyalty of the conservative GOP base. Immigration/amnesty, Dubai Ports, Harriet Meyers, Katrina, deficits and Iraq have destroyed Mr. Bush’s credibility as president. The new federal effort on gay marriage is as transparent as the dispatching of “less than 5,000 unarmed national guardsmen” to our southern border: a cosmetic ploy in a vain effort to keep the conservatives in line. This White House just doesn’t get it. Period. Before - when...

President Bush said today that only an approach to immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who have been in the country for a long time will be effective. Speaking in Omaha, Mr. Bush called any effort to find and deport all illegal workers "impractical." He said a guest-worker program would supply needed labor in the agricultural, hotel and restaurant industries. ...But with more than half the American public disapproving of Mr. Bush's job performance the president's powers of persuasion are not what they once were. Even the White House press secretary, Tony Snow, acknowledged that...

Bush Emphasizes English, Assimilation for Immigrants By Michael Abramowitz Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, June 8, 2006; A05 OMAHA, June 7 -- Continuing his campaign to build support for comprehensive immigration legislation, President Bush on Wednesday emphasized that illegal immigrants who want to stay here should learn English and demonstrate that they are committed to assimilating into American culture. After visiting a community center where immigrants learn English, Bush coupled a call for strict border enforcement with a plea that newcomers be treated compassionately. read more at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/07/AR2006060702071_pf.html

Transcript of Alan Keyes' remarks at Minuteman fence groundbreakingTo President Bush: 'We don't trust you' June 7, 2006 RenewAmerica staff At the May 27 groundbreaking of the new Minuteman fence to be constructed on private land along America's southern border, about 300 Minutemen and several dignitaries met to officially launch the privately-funded undertaking. Among those attending were Minuteman Civil Defense Corps leader Chris Simcox, Rep. Steve King of Iowa, Arizona governor candidate Don Goldwater, and Alan Keyes--all of whom addressed the group, along with a line-up of other secure-border supporters. Dr. Keyes delivered the keynote speech. Below is the text...

When President Bush nominated Gen. Michael Hayden to run the CIA, the press focused on disapproving Democrats and even some Republicans who were dubious about confirmation. A month later, when the Senate confirmed Hayden by a 78-15 vote, the story was given much less emphasis in the media, which had moved on to other stories critical of the Bush administration. Similarly, when Bush nominated one of his aides, Brett Kavanaugh, to the federal judiciary, the press was filled with reports about Democrats threatening a filibuster because Kavanaugh once worked for special prosecutor Kenneth Starr in the case against President Clinton....

ARTESIA, N.M. -- President Bush today sought to minimize the differences that have divided the House and Senate over immigration, and said that consensus was growing across the country for changes in immigration policy, as he focused on the need for strict law enforcement in a speech to Border Patrol recruits. "It seems like there's nothing but disagreement on immigration policy in Washington," Bush said. "Yet there's a growing consensus among all parties and all regions of the country that fundamental reforms are needed." "In other words, people are coming to the conclusion we got to do something about a...

ARTESIA, N.M. - With lawmakers preparing for the contentious work of negotiating a compromise on immigration reform legislation, President Bush tried to stress areas of agreement during a visit to New Mexico Tuesday. "We're making progress toward a comprehensive bill," Bush insisted, noting that since his last visit to the border last month the Senate has passed legislation that would allow foreigners to get temporary work permits in the United States. The House has passed a stricter bill that focuses on border security to keep immigrants out. If Bush is to achieve his goal of getting a new comprehensive law,...

In a major concession, the United States is prepared to provide Iran with some nuclear technology if it stops enriching uranium, diplomats said Tuesday. The offer was part of a package of incentives presented to Tehran Tuesday by European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, said the diplomats, who were familiar with the proposals. The diplomats demanded anonymity in exchange for discussing details of the offer, which was agreed on last week by six world powers in a bid to resolve the nuclear standoff with Iran.

Federal agents in the Department of Homeland Security are angry. They know something we don't: President Bush is arrogantly assuming his proposed Guest Workers amnesty is a done deal. And he’s spending on the still illegal program like a drunken sailor. The agents see the handwriting on the wall in the form of government job postings on the Net. Agents point out that new hiring and job openings at Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) have suddenly ballooned (here and here). The ONLY reason that would happen is to hire new workers to administer the new Guest Workers program. Says one Homeland Security federal agent:Normally...

Folks, I was in the car when I was listening to this, but it didn't come up on the Hannity live thread. Karl Rove said---and I could be mistaken about the time frame but NOT THE NUMBER---that we have deported 4 million illegals, and I thought he said, last year. He also said we deport 4400 per week (???) First, can someone confirm his numbers and the time frame he gave, but second, THIS COMPLETELY DISPROVES THE ADMINISTRATION'S CLAIM THAT IT IS "IMPRACTICAL" TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE (___fill in your number here) ILLEGALS IN THIS COUNTRY. I'm stunned no...

Islamic Radicalism in Mexico: The Threat from South of the Border By Chris Zambelis The ongoing controversy surrounding the debate over illegal immigration and border security issues in the United States, specifically as it applies to the porous U.S.-Mexico frontier and the status of millions of undocumented workers and other migrants that enter the country each year from Mexico, continues to dominate headlines. Although the overwhelming majority of those entering the United States from Mexico each day are in search of opportunity, many observers worry that it is only a matter of time before al-Qaeda exploits this vulnerability for its...
