Scientists are reporting promising results from a year-long study where soundwaves were used to heat and destroy prostate cancers decade3d/Depositphotos View 2 Images Treating prostate cancer through traditional means such as surgery or radiotherapy carries certain risks, with some patients experiencing impotence, urinary problems and bowel trouble, among other unwanted side effects. Safer and less invasive treatment options could soon be on the table, however, including a novel MRI-guided ultrasound technique that eliminated significant cancers in 80 percent of subjects in a year-long study. The new technique is called MRI-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA) and has been under development for...

L-R: Dr Sungyoung Shim and Dr Lan Nguyen. Credit: Monash University __________________________________________________________________________ It's called the 'kiss of death'. Triple negative breast cancer has no targeted drug therapy and, as such, the only hope for these patients is chemotherapy. Triple negative breast cancer is aggressive and deadly. Patients are currently treated by chemotherapy but there is no guarantee of success—and unfortunately, for those that chemotherapy does not work, the survival rate remains only 12 months. Doctors are turning to combination therapies—cocktails of drugs—in an effort to kill the cancer. However there is no reliable way to predict which combinations, amongst...
  • Cancer cells thrive in stiff tissue, according to new study

Stiffer breast tissue creates an environment more prone to cancer by enabling the disease to interfere with the surrounding healthy cells, according to a recent study published in Biomaterials. Scientists studying tumor growth and metastasis at the University of Notre Dame fabricated a human tissue model to examine how cancer cells interact with connective tissue in the breast. The model allowed the team to control the stiffness of the tissue, mimicking both healthy and cancerous breast tissue structures. They found manipulation of fat cells to be stiffness-dependent. "One of the interesting things we're looking at is how cancer interacts with...

My wife has stage 4 metastatic cancer. She has battled this before and survived twice. This time the cancer has reached her brain and the doctors are a bit more apprehensive than before. Does anyone know about grants? All of her doctors are telling us to apply for grants to pay for her medicine. Any advice would be appreciated. I may not be able to respond right away, but I will do my best. Lots of planning and preparation on my part.

In a press release last week, the American College of Pediatricians urged health care providers to educate young women about the strong link between abortion and breast cancer. In 2013, Dr. Rebecca Johnson, a cancer specialist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, released results of a study that demonstrated that the number of advanced breast cancer cases has increased among younger women, aged 25-39 years. After an analysis of 34 years worth of data from many countries, Johnson and her colleagues found that induced abortion was likely a causal–not correlational–risk factor for the development of breast cancer. The pediatricians group also revisits the...

Breastfed babies are more likely to turn into well-educated and higher-earning adults, according to a major long-term study. ... It is already known that breastfeeding can increase a child’s IQ by a small amount. The question that Dr Bernardo Lessa Horta from the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil wanted to answer was whether this translated into greater intelligence and better prospects as an adult. “Our study provides the first evidence that prolonged breastfeeding not only increases intelligence until at least the age of 30 years but also has an impact both at an individual and societal level by improving...

A trial surrounding Rep. Alan Grayson’s wife’s alleged bigamy has been delayed due to an unlikely medical reason. Lolita Grayson filed court papers this week saying she had been suffering from chest pains. When she went to a hospital to find out the cause, she was told she needed emergency surgery to remove her leaking breast implants and scar tissue, according to the Associated Press. The surgery was Monday; the trial had been scheduled for Thursday in Orlando and has now been rescheduled for March. "Due to this medical emergency, wife is unable to prepare for or attend the trial,"...

Think of it as test driving plastic surgery: You wouldn't buy a car without driving it, seeing how it feels when you sit in the seat. So why should breasts be any different? The New York plastic surgeon who developed the "insta breast," a saline injection into the breast that gives the impression of implants for 24 hours, is now working on a method that would last two to three weeks.

I hate to say I told you so. That’s usually an empty phrase. Let’s face it: most people love to say “I told you so.” But in this case, I really do hate it—because I successfully predicted that something pretty awful would happen. Back in February of 2012, the Susan G. Komen controversy was at its zenith. You’ll recall that Susan G. Komen announced that it would stop funding Planned Parenthood, which it had been doing to the tune of about $600,000 a year, and use that money for other projects instead. Planned Parenthood responded with an extensive media campaign...

French Women May Be Ordered To Have Faulty Breast Implants RemovedDecember 21, 2011 French government officials are expected to order tens of thousands of women to have defective breast implants made from industrial silicone removed because of health concerns, various media outlets reported on Tuesday. According to Guardian reporter Angelique Chrisafis, the implants, which were manufactured by a company called Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), were made from a cheaper, non-medical silicone usually used for electronics and computer parts. Furthermore, the implants were said to have a higher chance of bursting than their conventional counterparts, and now reports have surfaced that...

I see today that Andrea Mitchell has breast cancer. I read threads here and at other sources from time to time of others newly diagnosed or struggling with it. What you won't hear most of the medical community tell you is, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, other reproductive cancers, including prostate, are tied directly to iodine deficiency. Same applies for breast and uterine fibroids and enlarged prostate glands. As well as goiter or nodules on the thyroid. I felt compelled to start a thread on this as we ALL need iodine and we are almost ALL deficient in it. Iodine is...
