Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has strengthened his lead in the 2020 Democratic presidential race and surpassed former Vice President Joe Biden in support from African American voters, according to a new poll. Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg “overstated” his partnerships with black-owned businesses in South Carolina as he tries to improve his standing with minority voters, according to a report. The former South Bend mayor wrote in an op-ed last week in The State, a South Carolina newspaper, that his campaign had “proudly partnered with local businesses like Diane’s Kitchen in Chester, Atlantis Restaurant in Moncks Corner and the Fair Deal Grocery on Charleston’s Eastside.” The problem, however, is that two of those businesses denied to ABC News that they had forged any sort of partnership with the candidate.

The editors of the Washington Post are upset that President Trump pardoned Dinesh D’Souza. They also express concern that Trump might pardon Martha Stewart and Rod Blagojevich. I have no problem with the D’Souza pardon. The Obama administration threw the book at D’Souza for a relatively small campaign finance law offense that, as I understand it, normally results in a slap on the wrist. The New York Times reported Friday morning that African American workers are seeing their wages rise for the first time after a “decade of stagnation,” further evidence of the strength of the U.S. economy. The Times report came as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the economy created 225,000 new jobs in January, smashing expectations. Unemployment ticked upward to 3.6% — but that was due to more workers entering the labor force, generating the highest labor force participation rate thus far in the recovery from the Great Recession. A new Rasmussen poll shows black voter support for President Trump has doubled in the last year to an astonishing 42%. In November, polls by both Rasmussen and Emerson showed Trump had a remarkable 34% approval rating among black voters, compared to the 8% he received from blacks in the 2016 election. As a part of the president's national reelection campaign, organizing group Black Voices for Trump held a meeting at First Immanuel Baptist Church in North Philly on Thursday night. The meeting promoted as a "roundtable discussion and Trump Victory Leadership Initiative" according to the national Black Voices Facebook page.
