A shoplifter knocked a 77-year-old woman unconscious as he made a mad dash from a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Manhattan on Saturday with just $35 in stolen Funko Pop! toys in a shocking moment that was caught on surveillance video. New York City Police released footage that shows the thief running out the door after he snatched the popular collectibles from a display inside the Union Square location around 12:20 p.m. When loss prevention employees tried to stop him, the brazen thief forced his way through and slammed into the unidentified elderly woman walking into the store. The woman...

hite House coronavirus adviser and long-time U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci's upcoming book has been scrubbed from and altered on online listings, amid criticism that he is profiting from the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. The book, "Expect the Unexpected," was earlier pegged for a November release, according to its Amazon listing. As of Wednesday morning, the book's listing had been entirely scrubbed from Amazon. However, a cached version of the listing, still displayed the book's promotional description and preorder status. A cached website also shows the book's listing on Barnes & Noble's website, though by Wednesday morning that listing...

Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch has resigned. His resignation is effective immediately. Michael Huseby will now be the CEO of NOOK Media and president of Barnes & Noble. Allen Lindstrom has been promoted and will serve as the company's new CFO. The news isn't a huge surprise. Barnes & Noble has largely failed to adapt to the growing tablet and e-reader market. And although its Android-based Nook tablets have received decent reviews, they haven't been selling very well. In May, Barnes & Noble made a quiet admission that its Nook tablets weren't selling as well as it had hoped...

Ok, Ron, now what? Investor Ron Burkle on Tuesday suffered a double loss in his fight against Barnes & Noble. Shareholders beat back his proposals to elect him and two other director nominees, and his suggestion to raise the threshold for the company’s poison pill that has been the source of tension between Burkle and the bookseller. Burkle is the second-largest holder of Barnes & Noble shares, and so far he isn’t going quietly. In a statement, his Yucaipa Cos. blamed the loss of the shareholder vote on an “insurmountable insider voting advantage” for Barnes & Noble founder Len Riggio...

It was all just an "error" that's since been "fine-tuned." So says Barnes & Noble [B&N] now about the way its search engine was prominently returning Barack Obama's "Audacity of Hope" in response to search requests for "God: A Biography." We wrote about the matter here last Thursday. Today, reader Dan H. wrote to tell us about an interesting exchange of emails he had with B&N regarding the situation. According to Dan, after reading our NewsBusters article, he emailed B&N to express his displeasure, and received what to all appearances was a form letter focusing on freedom of expression, rather...

NewsBusters reader Shane S. shared this experience: I was searching for a book I read in college, "God: A Biography." I searched Barnes & Noble's website using the book's title as my search term. The book I was looking for was the first result given. The second result? "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream" by the Messiah Himself, Barack Obama. I tried the experiment myself, and sure enough. Here's the link to the search page. After the jump you'll see the image of the search page result.

As independent bookstores scramble to compete with chain stores and online retailers, one small Marin County bookseller found a way to survive. He got rid of the books. "The space was so small that people sitting in the cafe were practically on top of the bookshelves," said Gary Kleiman, who founded BookBeat in Fairfax in 1999. "You couldn't get to the books." SNIP His strategy is just one way independent bookstores in the Bay Area and across the country are adapting to the changing marketplace for books. Today, fewer than half the books sold nationwide are purchased in bookstores, according...

Barnes & Noble Inc. said its board's audit committee will conduct a review of the company's stock-option practices after a shareholder filed a lawsuit alleging that the New York-based bookseller improperly backdated dozens of options grants to executives. Federal authorities are investigating the options practices of more than 50 companies to determine whether they backdated or otherwise manipulated grant dates to make them more lucrative. Stock options give employees the right to buy shares in the future at current prices, so retroactively giving executives lower-priced options can translate into significant additional pay for executives. Barnes & Noble said there was...

For those following the Holiday/Christmas controversies, note that if you visit the Music/Video department of your local Barnes & Noble you will literally see a music section marked "Holiday/Hannukah/Kwanzaa." Suffice it to say no purchases were made tonight.

For book lovers out there who are still stubbornly insisting that the rise of Christian fundamentalism homophobic right wing government is not necessarily a good thing, I bring glad tidings: You can do something about it and simultaneously take care of all your holiday book shopping needs, thanks to a new website that reveals the political donations of major retailers. For example, wondering whether to buy books online at Amazon.com or at BarnesandNoble.com? Does it make the decision easier for you to know that 98% of B&N's corporate political donations went to the Democrats, while 61% of Amazon's went to...

ATLANTA - For more than 100 years the sound of Christmas in America has been from an army of bell ringers raising money for the Salvation Army. For Willie Pickett in Atlanta, it's also about spreading Christmas cheer. "I just love making people smile," says Pickett, a frequent bell ringer.

Conservatives like to tell war stories-and refute them, a la the Swift Boat Vets-and some of those stories concern bookstores. And the people who work in them. Who tend to be….well, not exactly the most conservative-friendly people in the world. The bookstore leftist is more standard than the bookstore cat. And conservatives have often found these stores to be hostile territory. In recent weeks, reports have circulated that customers-or would-be customers-are having a hard time finding Unfit for Command, John O'Neill's anti-Kerry book. Conservatives have suspected that stores are keeping it from them, or that clerks are deep-sixing them, or...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Controversial book "Unfit for Command," which fires an election-year salvo at Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's war record, has claimed one unintended victim -- bookstore chain Barnes & Noble Inc . Barnes & Noble, the world's largest bookseller, on Monday issued a statement saying it had sold out of the book and, in effect, held up its hands in surrender to what it called "thousands of complaints" from both supporters and detractors of the book. Supporters, Barnes & Noble said, are claiming the bookseller has intentionally not stocked the title or is hiding it, while detractors...

I was at the Westlake Village Barnes & Noble yesterday and true to form, the store was packed with anti-Bush books galore. I felt like I was walking into the DNC, not a bookstore. They didn't have Unfit for Command and they didn't know when any additional stock would arrive. Anyway, they had a display about Current Affairs/Politics on the first floor next to the Information Desk that had every conceivable "Bush is evil" book on the table. There was also a note about an appearance on August 23rd by Robert Scheer, co-author of The Five Biggest Lies Bush Told...

Earlier I saw a post about a group that was raising money from companies which would donate to their cause. shoptodropbush.com. Their stated goal is to raise funds for the DNC, the eventual Democrat candidate for POTUS, and "movingon.org" Amazingly, among its sponsors listed were Amazon.con, Barnes & Noble, Office Depot, and somewhat ironically the Worldwide Cigar Club. Amazon includes Target and Toys R Us. Unlike the site's sponsors who are of the ilk to continuously condemn our 'greedy corporate culture,' I admire corporate community outreach, but don't appreciate donations of this sort by companies that get a LOT of...

TV Star Tossed Out of Bookstore! Tuesday, October 1, 2002; Page C03 The Washington Post reports that George Stephanopoulos and his two dogs were thrown out of the Georgetown Barnes & Noble Sunday afternoon.According to the story in the Post headlined, " TV Star Tossed Out of Bookstore!" Stephanopoulos took the dogs into the bookstore where Gilbert, the family Dachshund started barking and refused to stop. Stepanopoulos was then told to leave. A Barnes & Noble patron e-mailed a Post writer ( the staff is withholding by-lines because of a labor dispute) that "he had a baby carriage, and two...
