    NewsBusters.org ^ | July 25, 2012 | Ken Shepherd
*Corrected from earlier | WRAL, the CBS affiliate in Raleigh, N.C., recently published a searchable database of concealed carry licensees within the "WRAL viewing area, including Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Orange, Nash, Northampton, Person, Sampson, Vance, Warren, Wayne, Wilson and Wake counties." Searches do not turn up names or street numbers, but they do give a number of permits issued to residents on that street. The search form for the database appears within a story filed July 12 (updated July 20 -- the day of the Aurora, Colo., shooting), entitled "Rural areas...

Explanation: Why is this aurora strikingly pink? When photographing picturesque Crater Lake in Oregon, USA last month, the background sky lit up with auroras of unusual colors. Although much is known about the physical mechanisms that create auroras, accurately predicting the occurrence and colors of auroras remains a topic of investigation. Typically, it is known, the lowest auroras appear green. These occur at about 100 kilometers high and involve atmospheric oxygen atoms excited by fast moving plasma from space. The next highest auroras -- at about 200 kilometers up -- appear red, and are also emitted by resettling atmospheric oxygen....

A man wielding an ax apologized after the owner of a business he was trying to rob got out a handgun, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said. Early Wednesday morning, deputies were called to Rusty’s Grill on Pineview Drive because of an attempted armed robbery. The sheriff’s office said a man with an ax had walked into the restaurant and demanded money. When the business owner produced a handgun and challenged the man, he apologized, said he was on drugs and fled the scene, according to investigators.

The FBI recovered a package that apparently was mailed by James Eagan Holmes after the shooting suspect told investigators to look for the item on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, a senior law enforcement official told NBC News on Wednesday. The source told NBC that the package contained writings about killing people, but could not go into more detail.
  • This Wasn't Supposed to Happen: Gun Sales Jump in Colorado

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: This wasn't supposed to happen. "Firearms sales are surging in the wake of the Colorado movie theater massacre as buyers express fears that anti-gun politicians may use the shootings to seek new restrictions on owning weapons. In Colorado, the site of Friday's shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens of others, gun sales jumped in the three days that followed. The state approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm -- 25 percent more than the average Friday to Sunday period in 2012 and 43 percent more than the same interval the week...

While the Left looks for more reasons to restrict our right to self defense every time an infamous shooting occurs, the standard reaction of the general population in Colorado is to stock up on guns and ammo in self defense. It’s a reaction that’s uniquely American, where every man’s a captain. But it’s also a reaction that has a long history in the West, a history we should be proud of. And when I say the West I really mean everywhere in America. Because at one time or another in our history everywhere from the tidewater on the east coast...

AURORA, Colo. – James Holmes, the accused gunman in last Friday's midnight movie massacre in Colorado, mailed a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people" to a University of Colorado psychiatrist before the attack, but the parcel sat unopened in a mailroom for as long as a week before its discovery Monday, a law enforcement source told FoxNews.com.

Another day, another mass murder. This one took place in Aurora, Colorado and was carried out by a lunatic doctoral candidate outfitted in full tactical gear. Twenty-four-year-old aspiring neuroscientist James Holmes, toting a number of semi-automatic weapons, crashed a midnight screening of 'The Dark Knight Rises." And oh what a 'dark night' it was, especially because the shooter murdered 12 people and wounded 58 more, some small children. As a rule, it's never a good time to politicize a national tragedy. Yet, in response to the largest mass shooting in US history, Barack Obama responded to the crisis by extolling...

We expect anti-gun nonsense from people such as Bill Moyers and Little Big Gulp Bloomberg, but we might hope that Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly wouldn’t evoke an eye-rolling “Oh, really!” when discussing the subject. But as the crusty commentator further proved last night while arguing with a guest, Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), he still hasn’t done his homework on the firearms issue. In full-fire mode while talking about the Aurora tragedy with Chaffetz, O’Reilly insisted that there should be special reporting to the FBI when people purchase, as he put it, “heavy weapons … mortars, howitzers, machine guns....” The ignorance...

Accused movie theater gunman James Holmes is spitting at jail officers so frequently that at one point he was made to wear a face guard, sources told ABC News. Holmes' odd behavior was first seen by the public when he appeared in court Monday looking dazed, alternately bug-eyed and nodding with his eyes closing. But ABC News has learned that his loopy court appearance was just one of several bizarre behaviors. In the hours after his arrest Friday for the massacre at the Aurora, Colo., movie theater, Holmes stared at the wall in the Arapahoe Police Headquarters with his eyebrows...

(VIDEO AT LINK) "We understand those are outlier crimes, somebody going to shoot up the mall or shoot up the school. I would hope that it would be a Trayvon Martin situation that would make people think, 'Wow. wrongful death, even though it's a legal gun owner. How do we move forward from this situation?' But so much of this issue, I think comes down to, 'Let's make sure law abiding white people have access to guns and make sure that black criminals are not,'" MSNBC's Toure said on "The Cycle" today...

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: The problem for [Joe] Lieberman is the gun lobby is the majority of the American people. It's not a lobby that is stopping all of this. The reason that the lobby is strong is because it represents overwhelming opinion in the United States. How do we know that? The president of the United States, who had this tremendous opening if he wanted to push the use of guns after a tragedy of this magnitude could easily have done it and he has assiduously stayed away because he knows it's a losing political proposition. Liberals in the country want...

What we now know happened to cable news viewership on Friday is telling because it gives us some insight into MSNBC viewers. When they want news instead of left-wing pablum, even lefties are smart enough to change the channel. Yep, even liberals know NBC News is no longer reliable when the truth is suddenly more important than The Narrative: The latest sign of trouble for NBC's news division comes from MSNBC, which saw a ratings decline compared to previous weeks as news of the shootings in Colorado was unfolding last Friday. Not only did MSNBC's ratings significantly trail cable news competitors...

Gun Control: The gun-controlled Windy City is on a pace to have 450 murders this year, an Aurora every 10 days. Meanwhile, the mayor of New York ignores his own body count to say the police should go on strike. I don't understand why the police officers across this country don't stand up collectively and say we're going to go on strike," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told CNN's Piers Morgan. "We're not going to protect you unless you, the public, through the legislature, do what's required to make us safe." He was speaking about the massacre in Aurora, Colo.,...

Ashley Moser, 25, was in a critical condition after the shooting and was unaware that her daughter Veronica Moser-Sullivan was among the 12 people who lost their lives when Holmes opened fire during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises on Friday. As she drifted in and out of consciousness, her family could not bring themselves to say that her daughter had been killed for fear it would worsen her own condition. Yet despite Miss Moser's serious injuries to her neck and abdomen, which are expected to leave her paralysed, her unborn child is reportedly healthy.

As Thomas Lifson noted, citing William Jacobson's report on Chicago's daily count of shooting deaths and injuries, mostly perpetrated by males using guns against males, the total monthly deadly sum in Chicago is far worse than the few minutes of horrific slaughter in Aurora. Adding to that, many of the Chicago shootings occur within a few miles radius of the Obamas' home. Also, unlike Aurora, Chicago has strict gun control laws. As both Lifson and Jacobson mentioned, the mainstream media have been fairly quiet about this; not only because it would imply criticism of Obama and his former chief of...
