Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray said anarchists from out of town are responsible for escalating tensions that led to police clearing out protesters with gas and rubber bullets Wednesday evening. The people who remained on the courthouse square after an NAACP rally earlier that evening and didn’t leave after police told them to leave were prepared to fight, McMurray said in a news conference Thursday. “They set the precedent,” McMurray said. “They set the guidelines. They wanted to go hand to hand at that time. We do not want to go hand to hand with any citizen.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Sunday night’s unrest is prompting Birmingham mayor Randall Woodfin to declare a state of emergency and implement a citywide curfew. “So in order to prevent more civil unrest in our city, I think it’s imperative that we remove that statue that’s in Linn Park,” Woodfin said. Sunday night, Woodfin told a crowd of protesters in Linn Park that he would do all he could to tear down the confederate monument to help keep the peace. The Mayor says he will move forward with bringing the monument down despite possibly facing a lawsuit from the State Attorney...

Amid protests across the country in the wake of George Floyd's death, a University of Alabama at Birmingham professor provided a step-by-step guide along with a figure drawing explaining how protesters can "topple" Confederate monuments. Sarah Parcak, a well-known archaeologist who received a Guggenheim fellowship in 2020, shared on Sunday "handy" information about how to destroy public property she considered "racist." "PSA For ANYONE who might be interested in how to pull down an obelisk* safely from an Egyptologist who never ever in a million years thought this advice might come in handy," Parcak tweeted. The number of jobs lost due to the coronavirus shutdown continue to mount, with the latest weekly total of Americans applying for unemployment benefits topping 2 million, yet again. The latest swath of applications brings the total amount of jobless claims to more than 40 million over the past 10 weeks, wiping out the 20 million jobs added over the last decade by a two-to-one margin. But some states have been feeling the impact of job losses more than others. A Yahoo Finance review of jobless claims data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that Georgia and other states...

During his 20 years in the U.S. Senate, Jeff Sessions was a solid conservative who was right on issues such as stopping illegal immigration. He was the first U.S. senator to endorse Donald Trump for president and was rewarded with one of the most coveted appointments in the new administration. Trump appointed Sessions to be U.S. attorney general. Unfortunately, Sessions was a cowardly leader of the Department of Justice. He permitted Deep State operatives to remain in key positions. He recused himself from the Russia investigation, allowing his deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, to appoint Robert Mueller as Special Counsel....

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Conservative lawmakers in Alabama last year tried to enact the nation's most stringent abortion ban, but the attempt to outlaw the procedure may have had one ironic twist. An Alabama-based abortion rights group used a flood of donations that poured in from across the country after the ban to purchase the state’s busiest abortion clinic to ensure it stays open. Yellowhammer Fund — a group founded to help low-income women access abortion — announced the purchase of West Alabama Women’s Center on Friday, the one-year anniversary of the passage of the Alabama ban.

Jeff Sessions, the former Alabama senator who is now running to reclaim his seat after a brief stint as President Trump's attorney general, released an open letter to Alabamans on Tuesday explaining his recusal from the Department of Justice probe into Russian election interference amid attacks from Trump and his GOP primary opponent on the issue. The letter seeks to set the record straight on why Sessions stepped back from the investigation -- which also looked into potential Trump campaign involvement in the Russian scheme -- while reaffirming Sessions' support for the president. It comes just days after Trump slammed...

The officer then grabs the woman, lifts her up and drops her to the ground face-first. The Birmingham Police Department said it is investigating the use of force by the officer, who was off-duty and working a side gig as a security guard...

State unemployment staffers are so busy, the Cuomo administration is asking City University of New York employees and civil servants from other agencies to help with the deluge of paperwork and callbacks. The beleaguered state Department of Labor needs additional staff to process some of the unemployment applications filed by tens of thousands of people suddenly out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic . . There are now 3,000 people working on the phones and processing applications seven days a week, he added. That’s up from the just 400 representatives in place before the health crisis. Former Attorney General-turned-Alabama Senate candidate Jeff Sessions is calling for a moratorium on all employment-based immigration until the U.S. unemployment rate reaches pre-coronavirus pandemic levels. Sessions made the announcement during a Thursday press release, saying the federal government should not take on more foreign workers until the country’s unemployment level falls below 3.5%. The declaration appears to be the most dramatic call for employment-based restrictions since the pandemic began.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall asked a federal court Thursday to allow the state to restrict elective abortions during the coronavirus pandemic, saying the abortion industry should not get “special treatment” when so many other medical procedures are being postponed. WDHN reports Marshall filed the appeal Thursday to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. He also requested an emergency stay of a federal judge’s order blocking the state from enforcing the restriction. “At a time when all Americans are making significant sacrifices to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, it is remarkable that one class of providers demands to...
