When Columbus first landed in Cuba and Puerto Rico in 1492-93, he and his crew were met and surrounded by the happy and ecstatic Indians, who consisted the absolute majority of the American continentâs population. I did not find a single Indian on the island back in 1975, though there were lots of the monuments of both Indian men and women in Guama (Matanzas), a well-known Indian village in Cuba. When I, then a 14-year-old youngster, who was full of impressions from those books and westerns, where the chiefs like Chingachgook and Geronimo were the heroes, same as their opponents,...

As Colin Kaepernick kneeled down, the boos rained down on him, loud and explosive. And the boos didnât stop, either - even if you could hear the slightest smattering of cheers in a few moments, too.On Thursday night against the hometown San Diego Chargers, with âSalute to Militaryâ night as a backdrop in a city with one of the nationâs largest naval bases, though, that backlash was suddenly conflicted. Kaepernick was booed during the anthem, when he took a knee (instead of sitting, as heâd done a game ago) during the national anthem, his helmet in hand.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa caused a firestorm Thursday, after he tweeted âHeil Hitler!â during a political debate. Correaâs tweet was in response to Panamanian politician Guillermo Cochez, who tweeted the first line from former Ecuadorian President Osvaldo Hurtadoâs speech last week calling Correa âfascist.â Correaâs response, meant as a tongue-in-cheek way of responding to that claim, is just one of many spotty tweets. In another days later, he referred to US President Barack Obama under questionable terms, stating, âit is worrisome that an Afro minimizes history.â âŚ

Anthony Stanton, of Baltimore, said he began keeping up with the coverage in Syria following news reports of the devastation following the use of chemical weapons against Syrian civilians. But while acknowledges the horror of such attacks, he believes that U.S. involvement would lead to the conflict getting out of hand and thousands of troops, including many young African Americans, being deployed there. âGoing to war [would] be an injustice,â said Stanton, 28, a neo-soul and jazz musician. âI donât think it will be a good idea. Weâve already lostâŚthousands of our people in war and to go right back...

Black Republicans for the most part have been conspicuously absent so far during the 2012 Presidential Primary Sweepstakes. But, in fairness Black members of the GOP in general have perhaps been more scarce than usual in 2012 for the same reason the partyâs conservative base has dragged its collective feet in embracing Willard Romney the presumptive nominee; theyâre just not that into him. But, regardless of their reticence, there is an election this November and Romney and the GOP clearly need all hands on deck if they want to take back the White House. So, where are the Black Republicans?...

As the Republican presidential campaign trail ensues, there is something obviously missing from GOP campaign activities and primariesâBlack people. The findings are a stark increase compared to the numbers found in the same state during the 2008 general election. That year, 75 percent of voters were White, while 4 percent were Black and...

Today the U.S. Capitol Police asked for an arrest warrant for Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D.-Ga.) for assaulting a police officer who failed to recognize her as a member of Congress. But the larger question might be: Are the Capitol Police at fault for not recognizing her? McKinney, whose hair is usually styled in braids, wore a traditional âafroâ that day and was not wearing her lapel pin that identifies her as one of the 535 members of Congress. When she attempted to sidestep a metal detector, as members are permitted to do, she was asked three times by a police...
