It was celebrated at the time as a major milestone for progressive education. In 2021, California became the first state to make ethnic studies a graduation requirement, mandating all high schools teach the subject by fall 2025. The idea, championed by California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, was to bring modern concepts into the classroom. At its core, ethnic studies, an academic discipline born on California campuses during the civil rights movement, elevates the experiences of historically marginalized groups. Its materials push students to question their biases, reimagine power structures, and think critically about the enduring legacies of colonialism. In California high...

NieR creator Yoko Taro in his trademark Emil mask from the games (Image credit: Yoko Taro) If there were to ever be a mascot for the videogame industry weirdos (endearing), it'd most certainly be Nier creator Yoko Taro. He's built a brand around being a little eccentric, almost always seen sporting his Emil mask and making games that somehow perfectly straddle being a little horny, devastating, and thought-provoking all at once. Hell, he even did...

A McDonald's employee posted an unhinged Instagram rant accusing her manager of bullying her a day before she stabbed her to death. Afeni Muhammad, 26, stabbed her manager Jennifer 'Jamma' Harris at least 15 times at the Detroit area McDonald's on Thursday after she was sent home over her performance. Just a day before, Muhammad had taken to social media to express her rage at being sent home early two days in a row. 'I got sent home early yesterday. I got sent home early today by the same person,' Muhammad said in the Instagram reel. 'I'm telling you, she's...

A school district in Canada has defended a presentation which declared the use of the word 'family' problematic, due to its 'white supremacist' roots. The Waterloo Region District School Board in Ontario held a professional training session in November 2023 during which the word was said to imply 'values positions of [male] authority and hierarchy,' and 'nuclear family structure.' During the event, entitled Dismantling Whiteness at W-O: Words Matter, it claimed the word 'asks for obedience' with 'no room for questions or criticism,' and insinuates an 'expectation to prioritize family's needs and wants; sacrificing personal boundaries,' Juno News reported. The...

A mob waved foreign flags as it tried to block the enforcement of the nation’s popular laws at a pot-growing farm in rural California. The foreign affiliations of the mobs’ flags were spotlighted by Stephen Miller, top aide to President Donald Trump, and by the chief spokesperson at the Department of Homeland Security. The foreign affiliation is important because it helps Trump unlock the deportation powers granted by the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. Trump has cited the Alien Enemies Act in his immigration enforcement, but Democratic-appointed judges are blocking such actions until the U.S. Supreme Court makes a decision. Lower-court...

Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., according to Federal Election Commission records. According to California public campaign finance records, he also donated $10,000 to California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2018, and his most recent public political donation was...

The beloved Gaines brand just took a hard left turn. Chip and Joanna Gaines — long celebrated for their faith-driven family image — are now drawing backlash from fans for caving to the LGBT agenda. Their new show, “Back to the Frontier,” premiered Thursday on HBO. It’s marketed as a “social experiment” where modern families live like 1800s pioneers. But this experiment came at a price: the trust of their loyal base of support. The backlash centers on their inclusion of Jason and Joe Hanna-Riggs, two gay men raising a pair of adopted sons. As Realtor.com reported, Jason Hanna-Riggs explained...

Thanks to technological loopholes of the CD, bands included tons of Easter eggs on their albums.Just as audiences now linger in cinemas waiting for a surprise outtake after the credits roll, in the 90s music fans would let their CDs play to completion, vigilantly scanning for hidden tracks or interludes to reward their patience. No Doubt - Return of Saturn 2LP No matter the medium, artists have always found a way to rebel against the confines of commercial music packaging. The trend famously started with The Beatles. A brief acoustic piece by Paul McCartney didn’t fit on Abbey Road and...

A food influencer tried to shame and bully a 113 year-old mom and pop oyster house over a pro-Trump hat propped on the restaurant's shelf - but sound found herself blasted over her performative woke antics. California-based creator Kat Ensign shared a snap of a MAGA cap she saw while waiting to order at Swan Oyster Depot. 'Spotted at swan after waiting in a long a** line,' Ensign, who goes by @katfoodsf on Instagram, wrote on a photo of an American flag baseball cap with '45 47' on the front. These two numbers have become popular symbols among conservatives, as...

Mayor Karen Bass announced a plan Friday to provide direct cash assistance to people who have been affected by the Trump administration’s sweeping immigration raids. The aid will be distributed using cash cards with a “couple hundred” dollars on them, which should be available in about a week, Bass said at a news conference. You have people who don’t want to leave their homes, who are not going to work, and they are in need of cash,” she said. Bass spoke about a family she met who needed two incomes to afford their rent. After one of the breadwinners was...

I am sure that Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent don't want to say "I told you so," but... Yes, according to CNBC the United States just posted some big economic dubs, with the budget hitting a surplus thanks to the tariffs that - one day, I am constantly assured - will tank the economy. The U.S. government posted a surplus in June as tariffs gave an extra bump to a sharp increase in receipts, the Treasury Department said Friday. With government red ink swelling throughout the year, last month saw a surplus of just over $27 billion, following...

Telegram news channel Astra reported the Colonel's death on Friday, citing a now-deleted post from officials, the Moscow Times has reported. The Wall Street Journal has just released a report that changes the direction of the Air India 171 investigation. According to sources familiar with the black box data, both fuel cutoff switches were found in the “cutoff” position—meaning the engines were intentionally shut down. This is a sobering and deeply troubling revelation. In this video, Captain Steeeve takes a measured approach as he walks through what this switch position means, how it affects the engines, and what it might suggest about the final moments of the flight. As always, our goal is to honor the truth, respect those affected, and...

The Senate GOP’s campaign committee swung at Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) on Thursday after news broke that his wife, Angela Paxton, had filed for divorce. “What Ken Paxton has put his family through is truly repulsive and disgusting,” National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez said. “No one should have to endure what Angela Paxton has, and we pray for her as she chooses to stand up for herself and her family during this difficult time.” Ken Paxton is looking to topple Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), with one poll in June showing the incumbent trailing the state...

In what appears to be a first-of-its-kind lawsuit, big oil companies – including ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP and Shell – are facing a climate change wrongful death lawsuit from the family of a Seattle woman. Critics say the lawsuit is frivolous and part of a public relations campaign being waged against the industry nationwide. The lawsuit, filed in King County Superior Court on May 28, alleges the oil companies knowingly fueled climate change and misled the public about the risks and consequences that the suit claims contributed to the record-high temperatures that blanketed western Washington in the final week of June...

I have been looking into buying some assistance for my hearing loss. I got prices from a local Beltone rep and from a Miracle Ear rep, both in the multiple $1,000 range. ($3,995 to $6,500) And, of course, just looking anything up on the internet results in ads and suggestions for all sorts of alternatives, including "Amplifiers" for less than $1,000. (All of this out of pocket.) Any suggestions or recommendations from this group? Thanks

President Donald Trump's proposed 50% tariff on Brazilian imports is bad news for coffee drinkers. Brazil, the largest U.S. supplier of green coffee beans, accounts for about a third of the country's total supply, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Coffee beans need to grow in a warm, tropical climate, making Hawaii and Puerto Rico the only suitable places in the United States to farm the crop. But, as the world's top consumer of coffee, the U.S. requires a massive supply to stay caffeinated. Mintel estimates that the U.S. coffee market reached $19.75 billion last year.
