Researchers have identified a novel macrolide–DEL-1 axis that helps in bone regeneration and new bone formation. This finding may lead to the development of therapeutic agents to treat bone loss disorders. Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports teeth. It is usually the result of poor oral hygiene that leads to bacterial infections. Aging may increase susceptibility to periodontitis by altering immune and regenerative functions. Development endothelial locus-1 (DEL-1), crucial for inflammation resolution and tissue repair, declines with age. The low levels of DEL-1 protein also affect bone regeneration and...

With many major airlines now committed to sustainability and ‘green’ fuels, a protest at one of the UK’s airports focused on private jets. On Saturday, January 27, Greta Thunberg, the 21-year-old Swedish environmental activist, took a stand against the increasing use of private jets, joining forces with Extinction Rebellion at Farnborough Airport. For female dialysis-dependent patients aged 65 years or older treated for osteoporosis, denosumab is associated with an increased incidence of severe or very severe hypocalcemia, according to a study. Steven T. Bird, Ph.D., Pharm.D. and colleagues examined the incidence and comparative risk for severe hypocalcemia with denosumab versus oral bisphosphonates in a retrospective cohort study involving female dialysis-dependent Medicare patients aged 65 years or older treated for osteoporosis. The main outcomes were severe hypocalcemia, defined as total albumin-corrected serum calcium <7.5 mg/dL or a primary hospital or emergency department hypocalcemia diagnosis, and very severe hypocalcemia (serum calcium <6.5 mg/dL). Overall,...

Somalian refugee Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) gave a speech to the Somali community in Minnesota on Saturday that has gone viral thanks to English translation subtitles. The translations have Omar saying she and her fellow Somalis are Somali first and Muslim second–with no mention of being American. Omar also said she represents Somalia in Congress and told the audience that they control the U.S. government’s Somalia policy. Outraged Americans called for Omar’s expulsion from the House of Representatives. Reporting on the speech is sketchy as to the location, however a banner can be seen in the video with a partial...

Researchers have identified a receptor protein known as CHRM1 as a key player in prostate cancer cells' resistance to docetaxel, a commonly-used chemotherapy drug to treat advanced cancer that has spread beyond the prostate. The discovery opens the door to new treatment strategies that could overcome this resistance. The study showed that blocking CHRM1 in resistant prostate cancer cell lines and an animal model based on patient-derived resistant tissue restored docetaxel's ability to kill cells and stop tumor growth. The researchers did this by using dicyclomine, a drug that selectively inhibits CHRM1 activity. Dicyclomine is already on the market as...

The hearing officer, a retired Republican judge, wrote a scathing assessment of Trump’s involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection but said the courts ultimately should decide. The full board will consider the matter Tuesday Former Republican President Donald Trump participated in the fatal Jan. 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, but it’s the courts — and not the State Board of Elections — that should decide whether to remove him from Illinois’ primary ballot, a state hearing officer recommended Sunday.

A new study has found that propranolol, a medication that treats high blood pressure, can also help lower anxiety for kids and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Given that some individuals with ASD tend to struggle with anxiety at a far greater rate than their neurotypical peers, the new finding can significantly help such individuals with ASD. David Beversdorf led the study, which involved 69 patients over a three-year span. Compared to a placebo group, the participants who received propranolol showed significantly reduced anxiety levels at their 12-week check-up appointments while receiving the medication. The study also examined...

It’s a presidential election year. Time to talk numbers. It is said that the United States National Debt – that is, the total debt owed by the federal government for past overspending – is now over $34 trillion. That’s bad. Federal tax revenue – that’s all kinds, from import duties to corporate and personal income taxes – every year is about $4.5 trillion. Of that, we pay about $400 billion in interest on the national debt. That’s only about one percent of the total national debt, or about 7 to 10 percent of federal revenues (why such a range? It...

Eminem has long been known for his deep vocabulary in his songs, but he didn’t need any words to make his message clear to 49ers fans. The 51-year-old hip-hop superstar, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, was at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco on Sunday evening for the 49ers-Lions NFC Championship game. Eminem grew up most of his early life in a suburb outside Detroit and is an ardent Lions fan. He was decked out in Lions gear on Sunday, including a Lions T-shirt and hat, and was seen flipping two middle fingers at a group of rival 49ers fans,...

Combining testosterone-blocking drugs in patients with prostate cancer relapse prevents the spread of cancer better than treatment with a single drug, a multi-institution, Phase 3 clinical trial led by researchers has found. The approach can extend the time between debilitating drug treatments without prolonging the time it takes to recover from each treatment. Prostate cancer is usually treated with one of several testosterone-lowering drugs for a set period of time. "This adds to a growing body of evidence in favor of more intensive testosterone-blocking therapy in patients with higher-risk prostate cancer," said Rahul Aggarwal, MD. The new study focused on...

A research team has identified a new approach to treating the inflammatory disease sarcoidosis. In a clinical study, the inhibition of a specific signaling pathway showed clear success in the treatment of granulomas in the skin. This opens up new therapeutic paths for sarcoidosis and similar inflammatory diseases. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that is difficult to treat and affects around 20 out of every 100,000 people. In this disease, tiny clusters of inflammatory cells called granulomas form in the affected organs. These granulomas can affect normal tissue and lead to inflammation and fibrosis, which ultimately limits the functionality of...

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump has said that he does not believe NATO would come to the United States’ rescue if it came under attack, once again voicing his disdain for the military bloc.“We’re paying for NATO, and we don’t get so much out of it,” Trump said on Saturday, speaking to a crowd of supporters at a presidential campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada.“And you know – I hate to tell you this about NATO – if we ever needed their help, let’s say we were attacked, I don’t believe they’d be there. I know the people,”...

A new study conducted by researchers sheds light on the potential benefits of chiropractic spinal manipulation (CSM) for adults experiencing ongoing sciatica following low back surgery. The study, titled "Association between spinal manipulative therapy and lumbar spine reoperation after discectomy: a retrospective cohort study," was recently published. The researchers investigated whether adults receiving CSM for sciatica at least one year after lumbar discectomy would be less likely to undergo lumbar spine reoperation compared to matched controls not receiving CSM, over a two-year follow-up period. Using a retrospective cohort study design, the research team analyzed data from a United States network...

We recommend the best PC builds for every price point. If you want a computer that meets your exact needs and budget, you need to put it together yourself. When you build a gaming PC, you get total control of the parts, choosing the exact make and model of motherboard, a case with the look you like and even the layout of RGB (or non-RGB fans). You could save time by purchasing one of the best pre-built gaming PCs, but you'll give up control and spend more. By constructing your own PC from components, you will likely save hundreds dollars...
