NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s aggressive response to his fourth criminal indictment in five months follows a strategy he has long used against legal and political opponents: relentless attacks, often infused with language that is either overtly racist or is coded in ways that appeal to racists. The early Republican presidential front-runner has used terms such as “animal” and “rabid” to describe Black district attorneys. He has accused Black prosecutors of being “racist.” He has made unsupported claims about their personal lives. And on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump has deployed terms that rhyme with racial slurs...

An increase in shootings due to a supposed gang war in Chicago has led community leaders to propose a radical new solution to violent crime. In a proposal called “The People’s Ordinance,” community group Native Sons asks that city gangsters refrain from firing guns at one another between daylight hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. “We have to start somewhere,” co-founder of Native Sons Tatiana Atkins told CWB Chicago. “Our goal is to approach our city’s gun violence problem strategically and not all at once. Things didn’t become this way overnight, and change won’t happen overnight." The ordinance was...

A cargo ship fitted with two massive sails developed by America’s Cup engineers is setting off on its maiden voyage from China to BrazilRemember in the olden days when ships weren’t fitted with engines and propellers to power them across the oceans? Back then, they used massive sheets of fabric called sails to capture the wind and use that to push them through the waves, novel idea right? Well now, that vintage tech is making a comeback on a cargo ship that’s about to sail from China to Brazil. According to the BBC, the 750-foot Pyxis Ocean cargo ship has...

When a racist and threatening email prompted the abrupt resignation of former Knoxville police Deputy Chief Brooklyn Belk, the question remained whether the message fit the criteria for a crime. Belk, and many other recipients of messages that are threatening but don't lay out a specific act against a specific individual, contend they're clearly meant to intimidate and cause fear. The Knoxville Police Department, the FBI and many legal scholars say clearing the bar of a crime requires more than what was in the email Belk received June 11 in her workplace inbox. MEMORIAL OF THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MATTHEW 19:23–30Friends, in today’s Gospel, the Lord explains why it’s hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Don’t think in terms of some specific measurement of wealth. Think in terms of a frame of mind. A rich person is convinced that joy will come from filling up the ego.So Peter asked: “We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?” And Jesus replied, “Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for...

“I got along with everyone,” Curtin told People in a new interview. “But I did have problems with John,” the funny woman added. “But that was because John wasn’t John. He was an addict.” Belushi’s drug problem plagued his short life and career and he died via an overdose from a speedball mix of heroin and cocaine. Original “SNL” cast member Chevy Chase revealed last year that the “Blues Brothers” star’s addiction was so severe that he stole Chase’s own stash of cocaine.

The U.S. and other countries could see their credit ratings tumble in the wake of climate change’s impacts, making their debts harder to pay off. That’s according to research by Patrycja Klusak, a researcher at Cambridge, and a team of scientists who used AI to calculate the likely impact of climate change on the finances of 109 countries around the world. By 2100, under a “business as usual” scenario where greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise at the rate they have in recent years, the U.S. credit rating could fall 4.6 notches. Klusak’s model has already been adopted by several...

In court papers filed in federal court for the Northern District of Georgia on Tuesday, Mark Meadows asked a judge for an immediate ruling on his effort to move his Fulton County case to federal court or an order that would prevent Fulton County's district attorney from arresting him. “Granting removal immediately and notifying the state court is the most efficient way to effectuate relief,” they wrote. “Alternatively, the Court can effectuate relief by issuing an order to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis — who is a party to the matter before the Court—prohibiting her from arresting or causing...

Democrats are “mobilizing” ahead of this fall’s Virginia state legislature elections, viewing the races as “the next major referendum on abortion rights,” Axios reported on Tuesday. Virginia Democrats are reportedly encouraged by the recent failure of Issue 1 in Ohio, where voters rejected a ballot measure that would have made passing a radical abortion ballot initiative in November more difficult. “[Issue 1’s failure] showed that abortion is absolutely a motivating factor for voters across the country,” House Democrat Caucus Leader Don Scott told the outlet. “Access to reproductive health care will be the number one motivating factor for the [Virginia]...
