TWENTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME LUKE 5:1–11 Friends, today’s Gospel gives us the story of the miraculous draught of fishes. In many ways, the whole of the spiritual life can be read off of this piece. Without being invited, Jesus simply gets into the fisherman’s boat. This is to insinuate himself in the most direct way into Simon’s life. And without further ado, he begins to give orders, first asking Simon to put out from the shore and then to go out into the deep. This represents the invasion of grace. The single most important decision that you will ever...

COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness for all age groups has been much worse against the Omicron virus variants than earlier strains, particularly the currently dominant subvariants, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data presented on Sept. 1. The data, much of which has never been published before, shows that the protection against both symptomatic infection and severe disease is not as strong against the Omicron, which emerged in December 2021, and its subvariants. Data from the CDC’s Increasing Community Access to Testing, a no-cost testing program, showed that vaccine effectiveness for a booster compared to a primary series...

Cardinal Muller to the Pope: 'Cardinal Zen will be tried by China, the Vatican should not sacrifice him to reasons of state' On the just-concluded Consistory with almost all the world's cardinals - an event that has not happened since 2014 - the Vatican's silence on the fate of Hong Kong's Cardinal Emeritus Joseph Zen ze-Kiun from China, who is absent from Rome because he is under house arrest for raising his voice against Beijing by defending human rights both in Hong Kong and in China, weighed like a boulder. "Next month there will be an unfair trial. No one...

A man whose testimony helped send former police officer Derek Chauvin to prison for 22 years in the 2020 death of George Floyd allegedly threatened to kill police officers and come after their families while being arrested for domestic assault on Saturday. Donald Wynne Williams, 34, a mixed martial arts fighter and self-proclaimed expert on chokeholds, has been charged in Ramsey County with felony domestic assault by strangulation. Charges say Williams got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend over ice on Saturday while the two were setting up with their three children near the State Fairgrounds in St. Paul to...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday implored an audience at the Venice Film Festival to resist indifference to his country’s conflict with Russia as the months-long war rages on. Appearing on the festival’s Sala Grande screen, Zelensky told the global film industry audience that Russia is staging “a primitive plot in three acts for the world to make three dramatic mistakes. To get used to the war. To put up with the war. To forget about the war.” More than half a year since Russia first invaded, the war in Ukraine is “a drama based on real-life events” that is...

Professor Damien Ernst of the University of Liege in Belgium is making startling predictions about the economic future of Europe, if something is not done to lower energy prices. In an interview with French news site Atlantico on Monday, Ernst predicted that if energy prices are not contained, Europe is going to see mass impoverishment, and he noted there is no indication the energy situation is going to improve anytime soon. In the interview he predicted that, “the perfect storm” that has formed in energy markets will have a massive impact on household and businesses, and that as time goes...

Asthma is a disease that can cause your airways narrow and swell as well as produce additional mucus. Rather than merely treating its symptoms, a new strategy targets one of asthma’s causes. Researchers from Aston University and Imperial College London have identified a potential method to address one of the fundamental causes of asthma. In experiments with mice, the researchers were able to virtually eliminate asthmatic symptoms and restore their airways to close to normal within two weeks. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden traveled to Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to attempt to "flip the script" on Republicans with a law-and-order campaign message. The theme of Biden's speech was that "the answer is not to defund our police departments—it's to fund our police." Biden's speech certainly involved a lot of flipping. During the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden was asked whether he supported "redirect[ing] some of the funding for police into social services." At the time, he responded, "Yes, I proposed that kind of reform." In Biden's three previous speeches on violent crime, his focus has almost exclusively been...

When I became the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Republicans had just lost control of the Senate. This does not merely mean Republicans lost the ability to lead committees; it means we lost the ability to control anything about what the Senate does. The result? President Joe Biden and the Democrats opened our southern border for an invasion and a massive flow of illegal drugs, engaged in enough deficit spending to drive inflation through the roof, took away America’s energy independence, drove America into a recession, and implemented soft-on-crime policies that have led to a national epidemic of...

WASHINGTON, DC — The world's top climate change scientists were shocked by the recent discovery that the leading cause of global warming is actually an enormous, ongoing dumpster fire located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. "For decades, we just assumed that methane-producing animals, deforestation, and the burning of fossil fuels were combining to cause the warming of our planet," said Dr. Curt Schampers, Chief Climate Scientist at the Greta Thunberg Institute in Stockholm. "Surprisingly, the greatest cause of global temperature increase in the world is really the raging inferno in a dumpster at the White House. A ‘dumpster fire,' as...

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Rick Scott wants DC Swamp creatures like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to know that his attempts to squash a GOP victory in the Senate this fall by throwing Republican candidates under the bus are “an amazing act of cowardice” and “treasonous to the conservative cause.” In a short but fiery opinion editorial published on Thursday, Scott lambasted the “many of the very people responsible for losing the Senate last cycle” who are “now trying to stop us from winning the majority this time by trash-talking our Republican candidates” as “fools.” “Giving anonymous quotes to...

Thursday night, Joe Biden takes to the airwaves to “continue his battle for the soul of the nation.” Sounds kinda biblical -- this must be God at work. As to the outcome of this battle, Joe and his godless legions might be in for a little surprise. Ahead of the midterms, Biden, whose handlers smell a shellacking coming Democrats’ way, is expected to try to frame the elections as a choice between Orange Man Bad’s 74 million voters and Joe’s collection of Marxists, establishment hacks, wannabe oligarchs, lifer bureaucrats, race hustlers, LGBTQIA+ zanies, and freeloaders. Joe, at a Maryland Democrat...

As far back as 2019, US Army-commissioned studies examined different means to provoke and antagonize Russia who they acknowledged sought to avoid conflict. However, they also warned that if Russia was pushed too far, it could trigger an escalation that would spiral out of Washington's control. Today we are watching this conflict unfold. Just how accurate was the study's predictions? References: RAND Corporation - Extending Russia (2019): https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_re...
