A Texas state agency is actively discriminating against white and Asian Texans, refusing them monoclonal antibody treatments because of their ethnicity. Discrimination is at work in Texas’ Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as overseen by Gov. Greg Abbott. The potentially life-saving monoclonal antibody treatment for those affected with COVID-19 has demonstrated effectiveness if received early enough, yet it is being denied to some patients on the basis of race. News broke over the weekend that the criteria for receiving the monoclonal antibody treatment excludes those of white or Asian descent who are younger than 65 and reasonably healthy,...

On a winter morning in 2013, a meteor the size of a four-story building screamed across the country, exploding near the city of Chelyabinsk and injuring more than 1,600 people amid widespread property damage. The chunk of rock and iron, which was 60 feet across, served as a violent reminder that Earth, bombarded daily with tons of space-going debris, periodically intersects with large planet killers—and a significant portion of those remain undocumented. After years of study and discussion, NASA is ready to launch its first effort to spare Earth the kind of calamity that extinguished the dinosaurs, crashing a space...

India's indigenously-made 'Covaxin', one of the vaccines being used nationwide in the inoculation campaign against the COVID-19 pandemic, is on the UK's list of approved COVID-19 vaccines for international travellers from Monday. It will benefit more fully vaccinated Indians planning travel to the UK without the need for a pre-departure PCR test or self-isolation at the address declared on their compulsory Passenger Locator Forms. Like other fully vaccinated travellers, including those vaccinated with Covishield, they are required to pre-book a PCR or Lateral Flow Test on arrival in England, to be taken before the end of day 2. The New York City Council Chamber voted to remove a historic statue of former President Thomas Jefferson, citing his history as a slave owner. The statue, commissioned by a U.S. Navy commodore in 1833, spent 187 years in the City Council’s chambers before being removed from its pedestal Monday, according to the New York Post. Approximately a dozen Marshall Fine Arts workers surrounded the structure with wooden and foam boards before using a pulley system to lower it into the downstairs rotunda and carrying it out the back door, the Post reported “Removing a monument without a public conversation about...

The risks to soldiers, sailors, and airmen of contracting SARS-CoV-2 affect the readiness of military organizations. The condition of an individual's immune status determines susceptibility to infection and is dependent on one's pre-existing medical condition, the implementation of beneficial prophylactic treatments, and whether protection is conferred by natural immunity or vaccination. Commanders who assess and rationally address the problem will ensure the best possible health outcome for those under their command. The age of those serving in the military places them in a low-risk category for severe morbidity and death due to Covid. Without accounting for health risk factors, those 18-29...

A research paper published in The Lancet authored by a German professor argued that governments’ stigmatization of unvaccinated individuals is “not justified” because fully vaccinated individuals play a “relevant role” in transmitting COVID-19.“In the USA and Germany, high-level officials have used the term ‘pandemic of the unvaccinated,’ suggesting that people who have been vaccinated are not relevant in the epidemiology of COVID-19,” wrote Professor Gunter Kampf, of the Institute of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine at the University of Greifswald in Germany.Using the phrase, Kampf argued, “might have encouraged one scientist to claim that ‘the unvaccinated threaten the vaccinated for COVID-19...

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia's public university system won't rename any of the 75 buildings or colleges an internal committee had recommended for changes mostly because of their association with slavery, segregation or mistreatment of American Indians, officials voted Monday. The system's regents voted not to make any name changes, more than a year after they established a committee to study that issue. "History can teach us important lessons, lessons that if understood and applied make Georgia and its people stronger," the regents said in a statement unanimously adopted by the board at a specially called meeting. The regents added that...

The Supreme Court of the United States unanimously rejected Mississippi’s claim against Tennessee for using too much of its groundwater. In this case, Mississippi claimed Tennessee should have prevented Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division from pumping groundwater from the Memphis Sand Aquifer over the state line. It argued that Tennessee’s “knowing, intentional, and forcible pumping of groundwater” violated Mississippi’s sovereignty and constitutes a wrongful taking of the state’s “most valuable natural resource.” All nine justices, however, disagreed.... ...Roberts seemed particularly annoyed by Mississippi’s argument, pointing out that, “Mississippi claims an absolute ‘ownership’ right to all groundwater beneath its surface—even...
