It is a search that has so far eluded scientists for 40 years: Finding a safe and effective vaccine to protect people from HIV. Not a single HIV vaccine has made it beyond Phase III clinical testing in 37 years of research. In comparison to COVID-19, that timeline seems baffling. Over the last 18 months, more than 32 COVID vaccines have made it to Phase III clinical trials, eight have so far been approved and manufactured, and another 90 are in the Phase I and II pipeline. “When there’s the political will, there is funding and resources,” said Hendrik Streeck,...

The World Cup of Francis achievements How will Pope Francis be remembered? Well, he's still chugging along on half a colon, and may have more plans up his sleeve, but it's time to take stock of the "Pope of Surprises". Here are a few entrants for the forthcoming World Cup (to be conducted using Twitter polls), and further nominations are requested. Fireflies Flash Together. Scientists investigate whether firefly synchrony is an optical illusion or really happens. It does. July 19, 2021 | David F. Coppedge On summer evenings in some eastern states, people are treated each summer to a dazzling nighttime fireworks show. Flashes of cold light appear in the woods, as males of the species Photinus carolinus emit transient bursts of yellow-white light from bioluminescent organs on their abdomens. There have been long-standing anecdotes of synchronized flashes among members of a swarm. Scientists have gathered some evidence that it indeed occurs, but there have not been clear indications of how...

I care about the future; therefore, I care about the climate. I belong to the vast majority of global citizens who, as poll after poll show, are concerned about the direction the planet is heading and understand the urgency and existential nature of the impending climate emergency. The recent catastropic flooding in central Europe and extreme high temperatures in North America are just a few symptoms of this. So in my family, we do something about it. We scrimp and save on our carbon budget: we walk or ride bikes instead of driving our car; we eat dramatically less meat...

Senate Democrats swooped in to rescue Dr. Anthony Fauci during a hearing on Capitol Hill Tuesday morning after he was confronted by Republican Senator Rand Paul about his role in funding dangerous gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Paul also asked Fauci if he lied to Congress about his role in the research. "There will be responsibility for those who funded the lab, including yourself," Paul said. "You are obfuscating the truth." "I totally resent the lie that you are now propagating Senator," Fauci fired back. Things just got tense between Senator @RandPaul and Dr. Fauci.PAUL:...

Two congregations in Georgia have left the United Methodist Church over the denomination’s opposition to homosexuality and merged into one church. Asbury Memorial Church and Wesley Oak Church, both based in Savannah, recently voted to disaffiliate from the UMC South Georgia Conference. Asbury, which averaged 387 attendees in weekly worship in 2019, finalized its process of disaffiliation last fall. Meanwhile, Wesley Oak, which averaged 29 attendees, finalized disaffiliation earlier this month. Asbury Memorial Pastor Rev. William Hester told The Christian Post on Monday that the decision to leave came soon after the 2019 special session of the UMC General Conference....

Leave it to liberal grifter Washington Post opinion columnist Jennifer Rubin to make a fool of herself by complaining that corporate America isn’t woke enough on voting rights. Rubin’s new whiny op-ed was headlined “Corporate America must commit to action on voting rights.” The self-described “pro-democracy opinion writer” flailed that corporations “talked a good game” after George Floyd’s murder. But that wasn’t enough for Rubin. She decried how there “has been little concrete evidence [corporate America is] working to preserve democracy and the rule of law on which their businesses rely.”

While white liberals littered your Instagram feeds with black squares and Washington, D.C.'s, elite donned kente cloths to take a knee for George Floyd, the Beltway's black residents who live across the Anacostia River were being shot and murdered in disproportionate numbers, bringing the district's overall homicide count to a 16-year high. But you would hardly realize the violent crime crisis engulfing the nation's capital until this weekend, when the violence finally came to the doorstep of D.C.'s elite. During a Saturday baseball game at Nationals Park, one Arlington woman who had left the game to wait for an Uber...

Given its foundational falsehoods, does Traditionis Custodes lack juridical standing?Cardinal Raymond Burke distributes Holy Communion at a traditional Latin Mass in Rome after a LifeSiteNews and Voice of the Family conference (October 2018).July 20, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – Article 1 of the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes reads: “The liturgical books promulgated by Saint Paul VI and Saint John Paul II, in conformity with the decrees of Vatican Council II, are the unique expression of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite.”The pope here claims that the Novus Ordo is the only law of prayer for the Roman Rite. It is impossible...

Top government epidemiologist Dr. Anthony Fauci and Sen. Rand Paul traded accusations of "lying" about gain-of-function research at a Tuesday Senate hearing, continuing the long-running feud between the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director and the Kentucky senator. Fauci and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky are also likely to face questions at a on whether the U.S. should bring back health measures like mask mandates as the delta COVID variant spreads around the country. In his questioning of Fauci, Paul stepped close to the line of accusing Fauci of lying to Congress in...

About a week ago, a company in Utah that makes custom modifications to firearms debuted what it described as a fun new product: a kit that encases Glock handguns in red, yellow and blue Lego blocks, refashioning lethal weapons to look exactly like children’s toys. “We have been building guns out of blocks for the last 30 years and wanted to flip the script to aggravate Mom,” Provo-based Culper Precision explained on its website. It went on to argue that personal defense is a right granted by God and that gun ownership is protected by the Constitution before getting to...

LONDON (AP) — The British government has decided not to inoculate most children and teenagers against COVID-19 until more data on the available vaccines becomes available. Children as young as 12 with severe neuro-disabilities, Down syndrome, immunosuppression and multiple or severe learning disabilities, as well as those who are household contacts of individuals who are immunosuppressed, will be eligible for vaccination, the government said Monday. The decision to hold off giving shots to most people under age 18 was based on the recommendation of an expert advisory panel. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization said the health benefits of...

President Joe Biden has failed to meet his vaccination goals. There are several reasons for this. Facebook. FOX News. Climate change, maybe. Despite this, we have to convince the people who aren’t vaccinated to get the shot. So how do you convince someone to go against a deeply held belief? It’s hard to say, but I know how I want to convince someone: screaming at them how dumb they are until they change their ways. Thus I’ve decided that’s the best way to persuade people. If we are to save everyone from this pandemic, we have to find all the...
