A former McDonald’s employee in California was hit with a felony charge for allegedly spitting on a uniformed police officer’s burger and rubbing the bun on the floor. Tatyana Hargrove, 21, was arrested in 2019 and will stand trial on a felony charge of willfully poisoning food, according to court documents. The former Bakersfield McDonald’s employee is also accused of shouting, “Black Lives Matter,” and, “F--- the pigs!”
  • Cyberattack on HHS meant to slow coronavirus response, sources say

The Department of Health and Human Services experienced some form of cyberattack Sunday night related to its coronavirus response, administration sources confirmed to ABC News Monday. The attempt was to slow down operations, sources said. The attack was first reported by Bloomberg. “As federal state and local governments focus on handling the current public health crisis, national security officials are also tracking other threats -- in particular those posed by terrorist or extremist groups and foreign adversaries who may seek to take advantage of all of the attention being focused on the coronavirus and conduct an attack,” said John Cohen,...

If COVID-19 (scientifically known as SARS-CoV-2) had started in Singapore or Taiwan, it would have traveled the world, infected billions of people, killed millions, and there wouldn't have been a single peep about it. "But it kills people," you cry. That is what cold and flu do, especially to the elderly and those lacking basic medicines. The world is panicking over a virus that causes mild colds in the vast majority of cases. Amid the panic, China is profiting as it buys up stocks at bargain-basement prices. Instead of engineering a pandemic, did China engineer pandemonium? Before pandemonium, science. Sudden...

The Dallas Cowboys have placed the exclusive franchise tag on quarterback Dak Prescott, meaning no other team can sign him in free agency. Sources told ESPN, NFL Network and the Dallas Morning News of the move Monday. The Cowboys can still negotiate for a long-term contract with Prescott. Prescott, 26, completed 65.1 percent of his throws for a career-high 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 16 starts last season. The two-time Pro Bowl selection hasn't missed a start since being picked in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Cowboys had until 11:59 a.m. EDT to...

Just thinking about schools being closed, and how to keep the kids/grandkids on track. I've used Enchanted Learning (requires a somewhat reasonable subscription for most stuff). Lots of printables to color, make booklets, etc. Mostly for grade schoolers. Dr. Binocs has odd but informative videos for the young ones. Kahn academy has a slew of informative videos, mostly jr. high / high school stuff (science, math, history) with practice problem demos and the like. Crash Course series has lively video lessons for all grades (science, history) Anybody else have ideas for resources to share? Disclaimer: I have no financial or...

All Atlantic City casinos will close until further notice effective 8:00 tonight. The governors of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut have all agreed to a set of restrictions designed to halt the spread of COVID-19. Those restrictions include a ban on gatherings of 50 people or more and all bars, restaurants, gyms, theaters, and casinos will close tonight until further notice. "We want everybody to be home, not out," Murphy said

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) — Gov. Phil Murphy says all New Jersey bars, restaurants, movie theaters and casinos will close at 8 p.m. Monday amid the coronavirus outbreak. Murphy made the announcement Monday morning along with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont. The same restrictions apply to those two states. The governors said essential businesses like supermarkets and gas stations will be able to stay open after 8 p.m., though all non-essential businesses must close.

The analysis of engineering or business problems often includes a list of positive and negative aspects of implementing changes. So too should the analysis of the effects of the coronavirus. What has been seen so far has been a panoply of negatives, many exaggerated for political fodder or as clickbait in the press's cry for attention. A sober look at this, however, can lead to a different conclusion. Will America be stronger, and will other nations take a cue from our success? The answer is a surprising yes. Imagine what the world will be like when 2022 arrives. The coronavirus's...

Last night’s debate featured Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden getting confused about what COVID-19 is called, with the latter also promising to end domestic oil drilling . . . Here’s just one other example from Biden: Biden promises that in his first 100 days as president, 'no one will be deported at all.' No deportations for any reason.

A church in South Korea sprayed salt water inside the mouths of followers out of a false belief it would help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but by using the same spray bottle without disinfecting the nozzle, it resulted in 46 church-goers infected, authorities said on Monday.

The portion of Americans who believe the nation’s defense spending as “about right” has reached a record high, at 50 percent, compared to 31 percent who say it is too much and 17 percent who say it is too little, a survey from Gallup found. Those saying spending is about right has nearly doubled from 27 percent in 2016, most of it migration from those who said spending was too little, which fell from 37 percent to 17 percent. The shift in opinion is largely driven by Republicans, who were far less likely to believe the U.S. was not spending...
  • In coronavirus fight, Kansas and Missouri hold ‘awesome’ powers to isolate you

Kansas and Missouri hold sweeping, authoritarian-like powers to separate from their friends, families and communities anyone who has coronavirus or has been exposed to it. Health officials can order you to stay in your home or keep you in a secluded location. Neighborhoods and even entire cities can be locked down. You can be prosecuted for non-compliance. Neither state has invoked these broad powers so far. But measures that just a few weeks ago seemed to be the stuff of dystopian novels and movies are becoming reality in the United States and around the world. “The public health emergency powers...

At Pajamas Media, Stephen Green rightly titled his live blog on the debate, “Grumpy Old White Men: Drunkblogging the Democratic Diversity Debate. But these two old codgers are beyond grumpy; they are both tethered to the already done or distant past. The first half hour of this match was dedicated to the current crisis of the coronavirus. They both puffed themselves up to tell us all what they would do; each and every suggestion from both of them were things President Trump has already done, already put in place. It was as though neither of them has paid a bit...

March 15, 2020: Bernie Sanders mentions the current “Ebola crisis” two different times. He also implies that multi-millionaires are immune from it. Yesterday, Bernie Sanders mentioned the “Ebola crisis” twice. Here are his exact words:“The Ebola crisis, in my view, exposes the dysfunctionality of our health care system, and how poorly prepared we are despite how much money that we spend. And the Ebola crisis is also, I think, exposing the cruelty and the unjustness of our economy today.”“We have more income and wealth inequality in America today than at any time in 100 years. And what that means that in the...

Just got a call from the hospital where I had an appointment tomorrow (a major Boston hospital) telling me that my appointment has been cancelled.I was told that mine is not an essential visit (I agree with that) and,as a result,it's been cancelled due to a proclamation by the Governor yesterday. The nurse I talked to told me that the hospital is basically now on an "all hands on deck" status...and that that started before the Governor's speech yesterday. Looks like we're in this for the long haul.

Although the "racist"-sounding “Wuhan virus” is now labeled as a pandemic by the World Health Organization, in America the real pandemic, more accurately described as pandemonium, is at the local supermarkets where store shelves resemble those in Venezuela. America is in the grips of a panic the likes of which we haven’t seen before. What exactly is a pandemic, other than a scary sounding word from science fiction movies? According to WHO, “Pandemic refers to an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people.” Per the Johns Hopkins dashboard, at the time...

…...My own experience with viewpoint discrimination on a micro-level occurred on Election Day, March 3, when I joined a discussion with neighbors on the Nextdoor app. Residents within specific neighborhoods use this public forum to discuss issues of mutual interest such as local burglary reports, local restaurant reviews, and plumber referrals. Under a thread entitled "Know your Voting Rights — The Poll Workers May Not," neighbors were talking about being asked to show their IDs at the polls. Some also discussed voter fraud. I participated by supplying a link to a PragerU video, "Is Voter Fraud Real?," produced by the...
