The death of former president George Herbert Walker Bush created a calm oasis of civil discourse, if only for a couple of minutes. It was appropriate to salute this man's kindness and statesmanship, even if you disagreed with him passionately, as many conservatives did. And yet, it's a bit odd that pundits suddenly remember the kinder, gentler noblesse oblige of Bush's presidency. This from the same industry that mocked him during his vice presidential days as having put "his manhood in a blind trust," to quote the comic strip "Doonesbury." As with former President Ronald Reagan, there is a vast...

Researchers in Australia have developed a 10-minute test that can detect the presence of cancer cells anywhere in the human body, according to a newly published study. The test was developed after researchers from the University of Queensland found that cancer forms a unique DNA structure when placed in water. The test works by identifying the presence of that structure, a discovery which could help detect cancer in humans far earlier than current methods, according to the paper published in journal Nature Communications. "Discovering that cancerous DNA molecules formed entirely different 3D nanostructures from normal circulating DNA was a breakthrough...

On Feb. 9, 2014, Culbreath -- then 21 -- was driving her 2013 Chevrolet Camaro east down the freeway’s westbound lanes when she slammed head-on into a 1998 Ford Explorer carrying three generations of a Huntington Park family, authorities said. In 990AD, the Archbishop of Canterbury named Sigeric the Serious had a more practical reason to walk to Rome. Having risen into his prestigious office, he needed to visit the Vatican to be ordained and collect his official garments. At the time he made the journey, there were many different paths to Rome. But Sigeric, who’d left from Canterbury, wrote down his route home through Italy, Switzerland, France and into the UK, cataloguing the towns he stayed in on his journey. The route he took now makes up the official Via Francigena. The only part that cannot be completed on...

Split 3rd Circuit Upholds NJ's Ban on Large-Capacity Gun Magazines The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has rejected a challenge to New Jersey’s ban on firearm magazines holding more than 10 rounds. The appeals court, by a 2-1 margin, said the law limiting high-capacity magazines does not violate the Second Amendment, the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause or the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. The court affirmed an order from the U.S. District Court that denied challengers’ motion to preliminarily enjoin enforcement of the law. Judges Joseph Greenaway Jr. and Patty Shwartz ruled to affirm the lower court....

For Christ and His Kingdom. That’s the motto featured prominently throughout Wheaton College. But what happens when it’s not about Christ or His Kingdom?I found that out recently after being invited by Wheaton College Republicans to speak on something I’m deeply familiar with—abortion and race. As someone conceived in rape yet adopted and loved into a multiracial family of 15, I have a rather unique take on this. I love actual diversity. As a biracial individual, it's literally in my blood.I presented a multimedia talk entitled: “Black Lives Matter In and Out of the Womb” (see video) which provided a perspective that is...

Michael Flynn has been waiting for more than a year to be sentenced. The retired three-star Army general, who spent 24 days as the Trump White House national security adviser, pleaded guilty on Dec. 1, 2017, to lying to the FBI in the Trump-Russia investigation. He agreed to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller. Flynn's sentencing, which has been delayed a number of times for reasons that have never been disclosed, is scheduled to finally take place on Dec. 18. Late Tuesday, Mueller filed what is called a sentencing report. Citing Flynn's "substantial assistance" to the investigation, Mueller recommended "a...

We’ve seen this show before. A very talented Christian recording artist (or author) becomes very popular, reaching beyond a typical Church audience and becoming popular in the larger world. He (or she) is then asked about homosexuality and fudges the answer. In turn, the Church quickly condemns (him or her). Can we do better this time around?I’m talking specifically about the very popular Christian recording artist Lauren Daigle, whose career skyrocketed when she recently appeared on the shows of Ellen Degeneres and Jimmy Fallon. She received plenty of criticism (from some Christian circles) for those appearances, but many others saw...

New satellite images obtained exclusively by CNN reveal North Korea has significantly expanded a key long-range missile base located in the mountainous interior of the country, offering yet another reminder that diplomatic talks with the US have done little to prevent Kim Jong Un from pursuing his promise to mass produce and deploy the existing types of nuclear warheads in his arsenal. The satellite imagery offers evidence that the Yeongjeo-dong missile base and a nearby, previously unreported site remain active and have been continuously upgraded, underscoring the reality of just how far apart Washington and Pyongyang are on the issue...

A Hawaiian monk seal was spotted over the summer with an eel hanging out of its nose, according to a photo shared by the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program on Monday. “Mondays...it might not have been a good one for you but it had to have been better than an eel in your nose,” the group, which is a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), wrote. Experts with the organization told Hawaii News Now the eel was seen dangling from the seal’s nose near the French Frigate Shoals over the summer. Field researchers — who were in the...

A felon who escaped from a South Carolina prison early Tuesday morning and barged into a woman’s home was fatally shot by the homeowner in what the local sheriff described as a “shining example” of why people should own guns and know how to use them. ... At the news conference, Sheriff Clark called the homeowner a hero and emphasized the need for people — especially women — to get concealed weapons permits. “This is the shining example of what this lady did — took the time to get her C.W.P. and set herself up to be able to protect...

A Philadelphia man’s freedom from the Westmoreland County Prison on Tuesday was short-lived. Moments after Thomas Lee Williams, 36, was released from the Hempfield jail at about 6:15 p.m., police said he attacked a West Leechburg woman in the parking lot, took her sport-utility vehicle and fled with her 1-year-old grandson in the back seat. Williams crashed 2 miles away in Youngwood about 15 minutes later, ran into a wooded area and was eventually apprehended, according to county Park Police Chief Kirk Nolan. Williams was back behind bars Wednesday on $250,000 bail. Investigators will be examining surveillance video from outside...

Former Attorney General and Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions hinted to Politico that he is done with politics after his ouster from the Department of Justice despite rumors he was considering running for his old Senate seat in 2020. "I've been clearing my brain. I think that's a fair statement,” told Politico Wednesday. “I’ll go to Alabama, do some things and then that will clarify things a little more before I worry about making a statement.” “No. I mean, no,” he added when asked if he misses the Senate. “I could go back and spend time in the woods. I’ve got...

An upstate mom blasted her dentist as “Dr. Ignorant” for telling her she needed to stop breastfeeding in an exam room. Mother-of-two Tiffany Elliott, from Irondequoit in suburban Rochester, said she was “beside herself” after being “shamed” by her dentist, Dr. Robin Craig, for starting to breastfeed her 9-month-old daughter, Ember, during her older daughter’s appointment. “I had Ember cradled and one hand at the bottom of my shirt, with ZERO skin exposed. Dr. Ignorant then says, ‘Ok I’m uncomfortable and whatever you are doing there needs to stop!’, while motioning around her chest with her hands frantically,” Elliott, 30,...
