A video of a Saturday night (June 16) "brawl" on Bourbon Street shows New Orleans Police Department officers "getting whaled on from behind" as they try to arrest the instigators, NOPD Commander Nicholas Gernon said.Video of the fight, which resulted in a brief hospitalization of one of the officers whose hip was injured, also provides, Gernon said, "a good example of what (officers) face and how they deal with it." The video was taken from a nearby business' surveillance camera. The fight, which occurred around 11:20 p.m. among a large crowd that appeared to fill the 500 block of Bourbon...

A New Hampshire distillery is marketing a new craft bourbon containing an unusual flavoring ingredient -- beaver secretion. Tamworth Distilling and Mercantile announced the release of Eau De Musc, an 88-proof bourbon selling for $65 per 6.7-ounce bottle. The high-end spirit is flavored in part by scent oils from the castor sacs of beavers from New Hampshire. "It's aromatic, very distinct. It's leathery, rich, slightly fruity in a non-traditional sense. With the whiskey, it really works in quite well," Tamworth distiller Matt Power told the New Hampshire Union Leader. The scent oils, known as castoreum, are actually found in a...

BERLIN — The European Union will hit back at the heart of the United States, slapping tariffs on products like Harley-Davidsons, Kentucky bourbon and bluejeans, if President Trump goes ahead with a plan to place tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, the president of the bloc’s executive arm vowed on Friday. Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, made the remarks to the German news media in reaction to the proposed tariffs. Mr. Junker said the plans to tax the American goods, produced in the home states of key Republic leaders, had not yet been finalized, but amounted to treating...

MIDDLETOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's the newest take on the bourbon experience: luxury ice. The chilly business venture is barely a year old, but several big name distillers are already taking notice. It's Kentucky's proudest beverage. The flavor, the aroma and the way we enjoy our bourbon is a science. That's why the folks at Kentucky Straight Ice say what we put into the glass with it should be too. "You're getting ice that melts three to four times slower than your standard ice cube," says Rich Finck, President of Kentucky Straight Ice. This allows consumers to enjoy bourbon longer...

Cleveland Whiskey in Ohio, founder and CEO Tom Lix is a firm believer that technology can accomplish in days what a barrel stashed underground would take a half-decade. Mr. Lix pours his mashes into a stainless steel vat along with chopped up pieces of barrel so that the wood can give the whiskey its traditional brown color. And in days, he emphasizes, many of Cleveland Whiskey’s products are ready for tasting and selling. Some, he says, even in 24 hours. Mr. Lix produced for me his Black Reserve, whose quality of taste is on par with Knob Creek. Its complexity...

In 1964, a Congressional Resolution designated Bourbon as America’s native spirit. Since then, there is nowhere else in the world that can make a whiskey and call it Bourbon. Like Scotch, Cognac and some other spirits that must meet certain standards as well as be produced in a particular geographical region, Bourbon is a whiskey which is only so named if distilled in the United States. To legally be a considered Bourbon, it must be 51 percent corn, stored in new (not aged) charred-oak barrels and distilled no more than 160 proof and barreled at 125 proof. This particular whiskey...

Will closing Bourbon Street doors at 3 a.m. curb crime?

For decades, bars along Bourbon Street have had an open-door policy, enticing anyone over 21 to walk in at all hours with drink specials, blaring music and neon lights. Come in, order a drink and carry it back out to the street, if you like. City and state officials want to put an end to this easy access, and they are proposing the bars close their doors at 3 a.m. -- but remain open for business -- in an effort to curb violence that has stained the city's image. "I don't see what the point is in it," said Earl...

"Shots rang out, we responded," he said, adding it was not clear what triggered the incident. Ten victims aged between 20...

After 150 years, Jack Daniels has finally revealed that a slave was behind the world-famous recipe of America's most popular whisky. We've reported before on the Great Bourbon Shortage that's coming, and the skeptics who don't think it's real. Now we have some more context on what could be contributing to the shortage: the housing crash. Let's take a step back. You probably know that there's been a huge uptick in the popularity of whiskey in America – especially craft whiskeys and, in particular, bourbon. Demand has surged and the number of distillers has ballooned. Now, understand that bourbon, a specific type of American whiskey, must be aged for two years in brand new oak barrels. Usually it's aged in white...

Kentucky authorities indicted nine people Tuesday on charges of spiriting away what one prosecutor called more bourbon whiskey than a person could drink in a lifetime. Prosecutors say the scheme led by rogue distillery workers lasted for years and involved tens of thousands of dollars' worth of whiskey but began to unravel when whiskey barrels were discovered behind a shed.

The discovery of a new virus implicated in the death of a Kansas farmer this past June raises many questions about its host, prevalence, spectrum of disease, and ultimately its treatment and prevention, according to an infectious disease expert who treated the patient. Yesterday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced the first known case of the so-called Bourbon virus, named after the Kansas county where the unidentified patient had lived. His symptoms — fever, low red and white blood cell counts, elevated liver enzymes, and loss of appetite — suggested a tick-borne illness such as ehrlichiosis or the...

**SNIP** Bourbon’s popularity has surged ever since the amber liquor became a star of Mad Men. Magazines such as GQ and Bon Appétit have devoted pages to articles on bourbon cocktails. The Manhattan and Old Fashioned have become fashionable again. President Barack Obama recently proposed a “Bourbon Summit” with Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell. “Whiskey has gone away from being seen as an old man drink,” says Mahesh Patel, a structural engineer who owns 4,000 bottles of whiskey and sponsors an annual tasting conference in Las Vegas. Sales of bourbon are growing at a dizzying rate. Domestic sales of Kentucky-made bourbon...

What Bourbon Producers Can Teach the Oil Industry

New York Times ^ | NOV. 18, 2014 | Neil Irwin
The market for crude oil is in veritable free fall. The price of a barrel has dropped 30 percent since June, and the ripples have only begun, with analysts warning of everything from bankruptcies of Texas oil fields to economic troubles in big oil-producing nations like Venezuela and Nigeria. If oil prices stay low or keep falling, it will be one of the most important trends shaping the world economy in 2015, which raises the question: Why is this happening? To answer that, it is useful to look at the market for another fluid that is stored in barrels, one...
