Some Africans are being kept in the "old form of Catholicism", Father Stan Chu Ilo, associate professor at Depaul University in Chicago, told AlJazeera.com (1 February).
The "old form of Catholicism" includes Scripture, Christ and the apostles, but not Luther, Calvin and Vatican II.
"There are many African bishops who are very comfortable celebrating Mass in Latin. They want to restore some imaginary past glory of Catholicism in Africa," laments Chu Ilo.
He admits, however, that many young people are leaving the Novus Ordo churches and joining Protestant sects - because Protestantism in its original form tastes better than the Protestant imitation that the pastoral council has concocted.
“Why would anyone give a sermon in a language that almost everybody hearing can’t understand the language?”
The sermon is always in the vernacular. The fact that you don’t know that means you probably don’t know enough for this particular conversation.
The way the RCC uses it absolutely!
Who in Africa can even speak Italian, much less Latin.
Absurd...
ROFL!!!
They wouldn't.
They don't.
And if you had ever attended a Latin Mass, even as an "impartial observer" you would know that.
God understands Latin. The Mass is the ultimate sacrifice to God the Father.
It’s not about you, nor me. At least not a Catholic Mass.
Y’all can do whatever you fancy well please; whatever floats your boats.
God created Latin.
He didn’t create confusion, which is exactly what the RCC has done for millennia by enforcing Latin in all of their sermons and texts in nations that have no affinity to the language.
Satan creates confusion since he is the father of lies.
Why is the RCC creating confusion in Africa? And do you really think this is “godly” to do to Africans?
Fair question. Why would you want to kiss a girl someday? I guess you ought try it out.
I guess you haven’t heard of the Towel of Babel.
I’m not surprised.
“Who in Africa can even speak Italian, much less Latin.”
(sigh)
1) You don’t have to speak in Latin to participate in a Latin Mass.
2) Africans learned to pray - aloud - in Latin for hundreds of years. If they did it then, they could certainly do it now. Many Africans learn multiple languages. It’s not that big a deal.
Here’s an example from 4 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K75FDLe690w
The sermons are in the vernacular.
You’re on a roll tonight.
Those poor Africans, being forced to celebrate in the old, unenlightened ways! In Latin, and with scripture included. Scandalous! This is all the fault of Donald Trump, who by the way is forcing the Africans to pick cotton on Nigerian plantations and to teach white police the best ways to kill young African males that prefer Vatican II!
There are so many languages in Africa. I have an acquaintance from Congo. I think she knows 4 different official languages from there. Might be better, for example, for an African on a business trip to attend a Latin Mass than to find himself at a mass in some obscure dialect spoken by a tribe that is not friendly with his.
Exactly.
My Dad was in the Army and stationed at several bases overseas. Wherever he was, his Mass was the same. The definition of Catholic is “universal”.
Imagine having to own only one Latin-English missal, compared to lugging around English-Korean, English-Japanese, English-German, etc. missals, during ones deployments.
The sermon at a Latin Mass is in the vernacular. If you want to know what the Latin parts are saying, buy a Missal.
The confusion is entirely yours, for not understanding the difference between a sermon, which is always in the vernacular, and a prayer, which isn't addressed to you anyway.
