On June 30, 2015, a surprise blood moon appeared in the sky, that was only seen in the United States.
According to the National Weather Service, large wildfires in Canada have been burning. Due to extremely high winds, smoke from these fires have traveled into the United States.
According to NBC-Chattanooga, the smoke should remain in the higher atmosphere and not affect air quality, it gives the moon and sun a rosy glow.
Heres what causes the effect:
As light from the moon or sun enters the atmosphere it gets scattered by particles like water, aerosols, and in this case smoke. Green, blue, and purple colors are sent in all directions but colors with longer wavelengths like red, orange and yellow continue through the atmosphere and remain visible to the human eye. Smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em...
Blood moon always sounds more ominous and foreboding than ‘suspended particulate matter moon’ or ‘nitrogen oxide moon’.
Blood Moon Ping
aerosols? I guess we all should stop using hair sprays and non stick cooking aids!
If God had created Adam and Steve in the beginning, there would be no human race. This action will have serious consequences such as the beginning of the end!
Still lots of rain and lots of water, flooding, local people rescued, we don't need it. And more is supposed to come. It's very strange. But we've had strange in other ways before.
I saw this and I was wondering if it was a blood moon now I know.
I have an 8” aperture SchmidtCassegrain catadioptric telescope (a reasonably serious astronomical scope) and am not going to tell the general public what I saw in it the other night.
Up here in the UP of MI hazy for days on end. The smokey haze seems to just hang in there. On Wednesday woke up to 36 degrees in the morning. 42 degrees this morning. There have been an increase in asthma attacks up here too!
What did you see?
That is an astronomical telescope . It is not supposed to be used for spying on the newly wedded heterosexual couple that lives next door. You know that well endowed blonde babe with 36 26 36 measurements!
Not surprised at all. We are in for a ride of the painful variety.
As long as the Moon is in the 7th House, and Jupiter aligns with Mars, we’re good....right?
(Lol!)
Blood moon ping...
Didn’t two planets align in the west the other night?
Laz; don’t ask. You know its what he wants. It only encourages him!
Steve, don’t be a tease! If you discovered a new asteroid that is going to destroy the world we need to know!
Confession, securing a spot on a hilltop for a beach chair, and a cooler full of drinks for the big show. If there isn’t anything then we can skip the first two and move on to the cooler full of drinks.
Optical phenomenon ping.
Thanks m2t, but, alas, I second what SpaceBar said. :’)
"Let's burn down the observatory so this never happens again!"
