The Blessed Virgin Mary was thoroughly Jewish. Different cultures and ethnicities have often portrayed her, Jesus, and others from the Bible as being from their group.
Since Christianity for many centuries was based largely in Europe, these important characters of salvation history have often been depicted as white Europeans. Which is fine! But other cultures have also depicted them according to their own appearances.
Here are 13 beautiful non-white European depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary:

But it might miss the point of the story.
In the same way, it's kind of important that Mary be recognized as Jewish.
Interesting !!! Thanks for the post .
You are, of course, correct. The idea I assume is to allow people to more easily identify with the holy family. To that end it is good.
The 13th is the most beautiful: Our Lady of Tepeyac.
;-)
Well...the most well-known depictions of Mary show her as a not-very-Jewish-looking Caucasian from Europe, which isn’t accurate either...and Jesus transcends race/ethnicity...we are one in Christ Jesus. :-)
Exhibit of paintings depicting Mary in Washington DC until April 12. If you’re going to the March or anything else in DC, it’s probably worth a view. National Museum of Women in the Arts, Corner of New York Avenue and 13th St. NW.
Michael Jackson wanted a white boy to portray him in his biography.
“In the same way, it’s kind of important that Mary be recognized as Jewish.”
No. It only matters that she be recognized as Mary. Anyone who recognizes her as Mary gets the most important parts of the story no what what Mary looks like.
The Black Madonna in Czestochowa is the most sacred place in Poland, I am going there this year.
I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time. The closest I ever got was...http://www.czestochowa.us/
However, one must remember that Jesus isn't "just a guy". Jesus in the Messiah who was prophesized throughout the Old Testament. From the House of David, born in Bethlehem. Jesus is the fulfillment of all of this, and if Mary isn't recognized as Jewish, then Jesus fails to fulfill some prophecy. And who wants that?
The Mary I met was the Mary of the 15 promises she gives for praying the rosary..
Testing her very first promise with scripture, her quotes are shown to be in direct conflict with the testimony of both the written oracles and the living oracles, the Messiah.
And that same lying Mary points to Jesus in her promise number 14 of that same list...
Maybe the world knows the story of the wrong ‘Mary’ and ‘wrong Jesus’..
And it may be a very important distinction..
One of worship and faith in the genuine versus worship and faith in the counterfeit (fake/phony/false/pseudo)
Scripture warns us about pseudo prophets, teachers, messiahs..
The Greco roman Latin Mary either was misquoted in her promises or she is a lying spirit/prophetess/witness pointing to a Greco roman Latin lie..
A faithful witness will not lie, but a false witness utters lies.. proverbs 14:5
I pray to our Lady of Guadalupe, which is my favorite depiction.
“The Greco roman Latin Mary either was misquoted in her promises or she is a lying spirit/prophetess/witness pointing to a Greco roman Latin lie..”
What is most likely is that you simply have no idea of what you’re talking about. I noticed for instance that you did not preface any of your rant on the 15 promises with the necessary understanding that someone must have the proper predisposition and be in the state of grace.
;-)
Not bad for a self portrait, if I do say so myself.
“and if Mary isn’t recognized as Jewish, then Jesus fails to fulfill some prophecy. And who wants that?”
So you’re saying that someone is going to recognize who Mary is but not recognize what Mary is? Someone will recognize the woman portrayed is Mary, the mother of Jesus, but not recognize that it is Mary the Jewess? You’re not making any sense at all.
