Bible Critic Says Jesus Isn't God, Stephen Colbert Leaves Him Speechless (Video)

Stephen Colbert, Bart Ehrman (Screenshot: Comedy Central)

As we mentioned, Stephen Colbert, heir to David Letterman's chair on "The Late Show," openly talks about his Catholic faith. It's a surprise to those who know the comedian only as the satirical conservative host of "The Colbert Report."

In this April 2009 episode on Maundy Thursday, Colbert hosted Bart Ehrman, a prominent New Testament scholar and biblical critic.

As Ehrman points out contradictions he's found in the Bible, notably in the crucifixion of Jesus, Colbert takes him to task in his usual acerbic tone. But under the caricature, Colbert presents the divinity of Christ in ways that leave Ehrman at a loss for words.

“Somewhat topical to this thread, I’m curious which translation of the Holy Bible is preferred when quoting Scripture here on Free Republic?”

Probably any version except the ones like “New World Translation” that are published by cults like the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Most modern translation actually pretty good.

Actually, it isn’t. It relies to heavily on the Geneva Bible. If you read the Greek and Hebrew, the KJV is really off.

>>He’s not a conservative which casts doubt on the entire article.<<

Catholic and Conservative are far from 1:1

I was looking at the theological aspects...

I’m surprised they haven’t trotted out that tired old THE SACRED MUSHROOM AND THE CROSS book. Maybe they are saving it till Christmas.

Bart Ehrman, Chairman of the Dept. of Religious Studies at the University of No. Carolina????

Now there's a reason our children, raised in church, strong in their own faith, come home scoffing at the faith of their parents, who've sacrificed mightily to pay for "quality educations" for their offspring!

The copy I have is a small paperback but thick. Easy to carry around. I’ll check out your suggestion. Thanks.

That’s not a change. He’s always played that part on his show.

When the article starts off with a lie it casts doubt on the article. It has nothing to do with the “theological aspects”.

Until he denounces abortion and a myriad of other issues he has supported he is doing the devils work.

Douay-Rheims Bible

I don't see what's so "accurate" about KJV.

Ephesians
English: Douay-Rheims Greek NT: Byzantine/Majority Text (2000) English: King James Version
  Ephesians 1
6 Unto the praise of the glory of his grace, in which he hath graced us in his beloved son. εις επαινον δοξης της χαριτος αυτου εν η εχαριτωσεν ημας εν τω ηγαπημενω To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

"εχαριτωσεν ημας" = "made us accepted"? Seriously?

1 Corinthians
English: Douay-Rheims Greek NT: Byzantine/Majority Text (2000) English: King James Version
  1 Corinthians 11
27 Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. ωστε ος αν εσθιη τον αρτον τουτον η πινη το ποτηριον του κυριου αναξιως του κυριου ενοχος εσται του σωματος και του αιματος του κυριου Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

These are just nonsensical translations, I leave alone choices biased against Catholicism.

The article doesn’t call him conservative, but satirical conservative.

Oh well that makes it ok then. Lets all look to this bastard for our theological guidance.

I think the King James translators worked from the best sources they had, and they were scholars of Greek and Hebrew.

Yes, I’ve read a number of Fox’s works, to great benefit.

When George W. Bush was President, Colbert was the featured comedian at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and was rather mean-spirited in his jokes about Bush—he is definitely not a conservative. Maybe some liberals find him funny.

Ehrman is not an idiot; he’s a complete cynic who is trying to cash in on a convenient cultural rejection of Christianity. The flaws in his “scholarship” and reasoning have been pointed out to him so many times that he is certainly aware of them.

The "Byzantine Majority Text" varies slightly from the text given in the United Bible Societies edition.

I don't know how to insert Greek letters into my comment, but the Liddell and Scott Intermediate Greek Lexicon has "to shew grace to" as the transaltion of charitoo. I have an Analytical Greek Lexicon (no date--late 19th century?) which gives as meanings "to favour, visit with favour, to make an object of favour, to gift."
