I support McClintock staying in the hunt until after the September 17th debate. Salesmen who don't make pitches don't make sales. That's been a major shortcoming of the California state Republican Party leadership. They don't explain to the voters what conservatism is, and why it's better.

McClintock serves a useful purpose spreading that message, especially if he can push his numbers up and get elected. If he doesn't push those numbers up, at least Californians will hear a message they seldom hear in this state, even if we do have to go elsewhere to win this.

Well keep your powder dry. I predict the next Field Poll will show McClintock's numbers going up(Simon supporters), Busty's numbers going down(Mr. Race-baiter and "You bet(Indian casinos) I'm going to raise your taxes(at least 8 BILLION DOLLARS) and Mr. Hide & Seek's numbers will either stay the same or continue to fall as they have done since he entered the race(no platform, no proposals, no convictions=NO WAY ON ELECTION DAY!) Quotes from another thread:

Bustamante as governor would not be good news for Bush. As a Democrat in the governor’s chair, he would inherit Davis’s fiscal problems but not his personal baggage. Accordingly, the election of a Republican Oct. 7 suddenly becomes a Bush priority. Nobody gives 2002 nominee Bill Simon a prayer, and state Sen. Tom McClintock is a very dark horse. That is why, on the day after Schwarzenegger nudged aside Riordan to become a candidate, the President declared of the five-time Mr. Universe: “I think he’d make a good governor.”

I don't consider Bush to be Welstonian or a classic liberal.  Sorry we seem to disagree.

I think McClintock is the better candidate.  If he can't win I will vote for someone else rather than see Davis or worse yet Bustamante hold the office.

Orange County Register Editorial
"Just stop the spending"

"Why doesn't the California Legislature stop spending? Just a month ago it cobbled together a fiscal 2003-04 budget that used a $4 billion car-tax increase and $10.7 billion in new borrowing to make it balance and left an ongoing structural deficit of at least $8 billion.

If that construct isn't a rickety financial house, we don't know what is.

Yet the legislature keeps spending. The Register's Hanh Kim Quach reported yesterday, "[L]egislators are charging toward the end of the legislative session with a bevy of bills - some of which would cost millions to enact."

The total could be as much as $100 million. Here are some items up for consideration:

AB 1383, by Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson, D-Culver City, mandates more frequent law enforcement cultural tolerance courses. The cost: $2 million to $4 million.

SB 60, by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would grant driver's licenses to immigrants, including illegal ones. The cost: $65 million.

SB 430, by Sen. Ross Johnson, R-Irvine, would continue the presidential primary in March 2004 but switch the primary for state elections to June. So California would have four statewide elections (including the October 2003 recall) within 13 months. The cost: at least $45 million. "I consider that a very small price to improve participation in our democratic system," Sen. Johnson said. But the state is broke!

"When somebody has an addiction one shouldn't be surprised then they fall off the wagon," Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College, said.

Assemblyman John Campbell, R-Irvine and a member of the Budget Committee, concurred. "In the majority party here [the Democrats], many members ran for office to fund programs for whatever - fill in the blank," he told us. "Their reason for being in office is to spend. Even as the budget deficit went up this past year, they just kept adding new bills. If you can't restrain spending now, when will you do it? The answer is 'never' for many of these people."

Worse, Mr. Pitney pointed out that the drawing of legislative districts after the 2000 U.S. Census locked in dominance by one party for almost all districts. So replacement candidates will tend to resemble those term-limited out of office. (Term limits have had a double-edged effect - legislators rotate out more quickly, but they too often don't gain the experience needed for the complex issues, relying heavily on staff recommendations.)

The best solutions are systemic, Mr. Pitney told us, and include restoring spending restrictions to the state constitution, something that is part of several candidates' plans in the recall.

We would add that all serious candidates for governor should promise to veto any spending bills passed since the enactment of the July budget. It's time for the insanity to end."

...the President declared of the five-time Mr. Universe: “I think he’d make a good governor."

I like Bush. I voted for Bush. I'll likely vote for Bush again. But just because he declares Arnold would make a 'good governor' doesn't mean much.

The President also declared Islam as a 'religion of peace'. That doesn't mean it's true.

I like McClintock.  I'd like to vote for McClintock.  Sadly I'll probably have to vote for someone else.

I agree 100%. Plus, I think McClintock staying in keeps the pro-recall fires stoked and keeps encouraging Schwarzenegger to take conservatives seriously.

I agree with you. Arnold should be made to clarify his issues further, and where those come under pressure to move right, so much the better.

We shall see. I do think that McClintock can articulate conservative principles better than Simon did last election, and I think that many people might be drawn to those principles during this unique time in CA history.

I respect that. I respect it even more when you post in support of McClintock. I just don't see the postitive outcome of trashing either candidate, when that's exactly what those who disagree with us the most would want the most.

Don't forget the WHOLE MAIN ISSUE! ELECTABILITY!

ARNOLD = ELECTABLE at this time.

McC is a candidate for another time.
He is a good guy who almost nobody knows and a person few if any Democrats would cross the isle to vote for.

Like I've said before, I am against losing more races due to running the ideal un-electable person.

You have to pick a time like the AngryClam person did when you have to see where things are for McC. The Clam person mentioned Sept 15th.
By Sept. 15th we have to see where this all is and two of the three Republicans need to get behind the most ELECTABLE candidate by that time or Cruz Bustamante gets elected.

I'm tired of seeing Californian conservatives lose the race to leftist Democrats because they will only vote in their ideals of perfection due to their supposed high principles.

Bottom line is, your high ideals with the wrong candidate will only elect again and again the Democrats to power.

I have said before that we need to regain California in steps. There is no skipping steps to any victory in this state.

In years, I've only been right about 100% of the time when I've spoken out on races and this is what I feel about this race.

If it is any candidate against Cruz but Arnold, Cruz wins!
If McC stays in to split the vote, Cruz will probably win by a slight percentage.
If McC drops, endorses Arnold, Arnold wins.

Bookmark the above statements and I bet I will again be proved right.

I'm not saying McC isn't a good conservative politician, I am saying that when you mention McClintock here in Southern California, most people usually say, "WHO"?!.

He is a great candidate for ANOTHER race.

I read your post, and your opinion is all well and nice.

However, I do not vote for anyone who represents just 20% of my political views. You may not understand that many of us do not want to have a wimpy "Republican" elected, who is afraid to openly advance conservative ideals. PERIOD.

If there if the debate is the 17th, then I think instead of the 15th, this has to be looked at again on the 19th and then get behind one candidate.
