Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

And in the Christian view, it's possible that his final pain and suffering brought him to a true confession and sorrow for his sins where a life of pleasure behind bars --- with all the cable television, free movies, nice gyms and good food would not have brought him to repentence.

Massachusetts prisons are well known for being among the "nicest" in the nation. IOW the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a good place to do crime since the prison system is liberal. 15 years ago there was one prison (Concord? Walpole?) which had a wing all the mafia guys got sent where they were allowed hot plates and allowed to buy shrimp and lobster via the prison commissary. The tomato sauce for spaghetti/pasta would be simmering for hours for their Sunday feasts. Shrimp scampi etc.

Anyhow it's hardly just an issue in the Catholic Church, there is one large Protestant church that has recently accepted homosexual activity. Congressmen had their own scandal with their young pages being sodomized. Liberalism infects many aspects of our society.

People are very angry that these children were molested and nothing was done about it.
We pray for our enemies and directed by God to protect our own.
Godly men hurt these children and hid it.

That said, do you have children? You may be a little more at peace with the anger here if you knew that this man's death may have prevented YOUR child from being molested.
