Ha! Would probably work, but don't think the fine folks in Philly would agree.
How much do you suppose that program, the internship program, and the diversity council costs NASCAR on top of the $100K?

Forgot about the yellow line and didn't think of the Daytona victory (as you say, blatant) until after I posted.
Don't forget Jeff Gordon's "troubles" of late, now that he's "tainted" by divorce. He's won, what, one or two races since that news came out?
And how else can you explain hot young newcomers that are "energizing" the sport? (Kurt Busch, Jimmy Johnson, Kevin Harvick, etc, all of whom are in the top ten of points right now).
To: NormsRevenge
Jessie figured that if they were called "race" cars, he should be involved.

Amazing! Derrick Jackson of the Boston Globe blamed Nascar and it's fans for the war ( the U.S.'s waste of oil etc.)in his ridiculous column. He specifically singled out Nascar.
I'll bet if the racist Derrick J knew that the racist Jesse J had put his hands out for $$$$ from Nascar he wouldn't have written his dumb article.

Don't tarnish my boys past achievements. BTW, Winston Cup runs in spurts. Luck, both bad and good, play a huge roll. That, and pit stops. Gordon used to have a crew (the rainbow warriors) that were head & shoulders better than everyone else. They were doing stops in 16-17 second range, while others were 19+. Then some of the rainbow warriors spit and went with Jarrett, who won the title. Now, Matt Kenseth's crew is ripping off 13.4's and 13.5's routinely, and he's the points leader. Its more than a coinkidink.

APPEALING TO NASCAR
What does the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his outspoken stance against the Iraq war have to do with NASCAR?
On the heels of Dale Earnhardt Jr. steering his way to a fourth straight victory at Talladega on Sunday, NASCAR Chief Executive Officer William C. France is being asked that NASCAR "cease and desist from further support for Jesse Jackson and/or his nonprofit organizations" as U.S. troops are engaged in combat in Iraq.
"You have stated that NASCAR fans are 'the kind of people who go to war and win wars' for America," Peter Flaherty, president of the National Legal and Policy Center in Washington, writes to France, reminding him that branches of the armed services and National Guard maintain important NASCAR sponsorships.
"NASCAR's support for our troops is undercut by your support for Jackson, which includes substantial monetary contributions at a time when Jackson is leading anti-war protests, even in foreign countries.
"Disturbingly, Jackson has employed extreme and provocative anti-American rhetoric."
Flaherty says NASCAR, among other contributions to the Jackson empire, was a "Platinum" sponsor last year of the Rainbow/PUSH and Citizenship Education Fund Annual Conference, forking more than $100,000 in car-racing money for the distinction.

I can imagine Jesse he be wantin a two lap "head start" for da bros who be driven a race car in NASCAR events. You know how it be.
It is inconceivable how the shakedown artist just keeps getting away with his extortion.
Meanwhile, the France family (NASCAR) better not start screwing around with this race BS, because the fans will absolutely not put up with it.
If a bro wants to drive a car, and qualify, that is fine, but the shakedown artist can go pound sand.

For Immediate Release May 24, 1999
NASCAR'S FRANCE, CART'S CRAIG TO PARTICIPATE
IN RAINBOW SPORTS CONFERENCE
Two of auto racing's top executives - Brian France of NASCAR and Andrew Craig of CART - have agreed to participate in a national sports conference June 30-July 1, 1999 in Washington, DC that will include a focus on minority inclusion in motorsports.
France is vice president for marketing for NASCAR, motorsports' largest sanctioning body, while Craig is president of CART, another large sanctioning body. Motorsports have come under considerably scrutiny lately because of accusations that minorities are excluded from participation.
"We want to change both the perception and reality of motorsports," said Reverend Jesse L. Jackson about the July 1 session that will also include Willy T. Ribbs, the only black to ever race in the Indianapolis 500; Dierdra Girardeau, head of the motorsports division at Walt Disney World; and Chris Lencheski, head of Chesapeake Motor Sports Development Corp.
"This is intended to open dialogue for inclusion and is not intended to be confrontational or adversarial," Jackson added. "We want constructive engagement, not destructive rhetoric. Minority inclusion is good for business. Jackie Robinson made baseball better, not worse, because he expanded the fan base, expanded the popularity of baseball, created new markets and inspired new talent that continue to regenerate baseball. The same thing can and should happen in motorsports."
There will also be the announcement of a major initiative for minority inclusion in motorsports, said Charles S. Farrell, director of Rainbow Sports, a division of the Rainbow/PUSH Wall Street Project that is putting on the conference. "The initiative, which will have the support and backing of the auto industry as well as major sponsors of motorsports, will change minority participation," Farrell said. "Part of the initiative will be a program aimed at educating the minority community about the myriad of opportunities within motorsports. We want to challenge our youth to become not only drivers, but mechanics, car designers, racetrack owners and operators, you name it. "This is a rapidly expanding part of the sports industry and the doors of inclusion must be opened."
The motorsports session is part of a national sports conference, ìSports in the New Millennium.î The conference, which coincides with the NBA draft, will include reports on the status of minorities in professional sports as well as other workshops on Technology and Telecommunications, Women and Sports, Getting Ahead in the Sports Industry, The Role of the Media, and Sports Merchandising, Licensing and Manufacturing.
The conference will also include a national forum on NCAA academic standards in the wake of a federal court decision that struck down the associationís freshman eligibility standards as biased and discriminatory. A federal appeals court has granted the NCAAís request for a stay of the lower court ruling in order for the association to develop new academic standards for implementation as early as Sept. 1.

NASCAR - JESSE JACKSON AND DR PEPPER TO BACK BLACK DRIVER
The Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and Dr. Pepper will sponsor a NASCAR Weekly Racing Series team this season featuring a black owner and black driver. Morty Buckles, of Stone Mountain, Ga., will drive a Pontiac for Philadelphia-based Miller Racing Group, the team said Friday. This team will race out of Concord, N.C. In an announcement which was part of the fourth annual Wall Street Project Conference in New York, the companies said they would work together to develop minority NASCAR drivers. The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series consists of about 100 tracks throughout the country, divided into 10 geographic regions.

It;s a lot more then $100K. I believe at least $500K or more. I'll see if anyone else can confirm the figures or If I can find it I will post. It was no small amount of money and effort being spent to placate the PUSHy people.

Among the 2001 benefactors of the 20-year-old education fund who were at one time either threatened with boycotts by or were "in discussion with" Mr. Jackson were AT&T ($300,000), Burger King ($100,000), Coca Cola ($50,000), McDonald's ($100,000), NASCAR ($150,000), SBC Communications ($152,950) and United Parcel Service ($55,000).
The Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, which is not tax exempt, reported 2001 revenue of $5.2 million, about the same as in 2000. Its income includes $1.1 million in contributions in 2001, down from $1.3 million in 2000. The source of donations to for-profit corporations is not subject to tax-disclosure laws.

More Diversity From Nascar
Jesse Jackson's initiatives to increase minority inclusion in professional American sports was furthered by leaders from two top auto racing organizations, NASCAR and CART, who agreed to work harder to diversify this $5 billion-a-year industry. Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kersee have formed a partnership with Roehrig Motorsports, and the team plans to compete next season in Winston Cup. Representatives from NASCAR said their goal is to "increase the number of racing enthusiasts to the broadest possible audience." Nascar is currently planning to form a diversity council to help address the needs of minority divers, mechanics and support staff. CART will begin work with a black North Carolina racing team, on a program to identify three black drivers to drive and train under CART experts and sponsors.
