[history]
Most people cringe at the sight of a pregnant woman smoking. Some people feel strongly enough to say something in protest. But one local man took matters into his own hands early Friday when, according to police, he shot an expectant mother who refused to put out her cigarette.

In anycase, if I were smoking, when reports that smoking causes harm to the fetus, and this happened to me, I'd take it as a strong hint that just maybe the smoking position might not be so perfect. My mother, my sisters, most of my aunts, and just about all of my friends smoked through their pregnancies and in not one instance was harm done to the baby.
You seem to be disturbingly enamored of "signs."
Who is this "other" person you think might have caused the "event?"
The Angel Gabriel?

The guy was probably pro-choice on killing babies-anti-choice on smoking-anti-second amendment except for the mentally ill and was outraged more than anything else, that this woman had chosen to deliver a live, healthy baby, instead of body parts for ghoulish medical experiments. So while smoking, (out of his ears) he pulled out the gun he believed only his ilk should be allowed to possess, and as usual with his ilk knew not diddly about handling a weapon, and in an effort to intimidate the lady, tried to shoot a hole in the ozone, only to miss the whole sky and hit the mother to be instead.
THe guy's sentence should be a year in a smoke filled room, without windows or a ventilation system.

"I never said there was something wrong with the NRA, just that the freak shooting people is probably a member."It is much more 'probable' you are the idiotic product of the public school system and thus lacking the ability of cognitive thought......or an imbecile and probably proof positive that Mother Nature has a sense of humor.

Why anyone would choose to breath foul air has always puzzled me. But that is your right. Just don't make me breath it. Just FYI...it's "breathe", and if you don't want to breathe it, don't stand near a smoker. Move. Simple solution.

Don't tell me smokers are claiming victim status, now, too. The vast majority of smokers do not claim victim status - there have been a few exceptions who have gotten suckered by trial lawyer sharks, but they are a minority.
The point being made about the 13 year old being beaten to death and this pregnant woman being shot is that the anti-smoker organizations are TEACHING people to HATE smokers and blame smokers for all the ills in the world.
The anti-smokers are the ones claiming victim status and BEGGING the government to protect them.
And many of these same anti-smoker victims are claiming that they are conservatives, but are unwilling to deal with the smoking policies of private business with their mouths and wallets - they would rather dictate to all through the use of government strong arm tactics.

Oh, brother. Every crime is a hate crime. Don't tell me smokers are claiming victim status, now, too. Oh boy! Where are you coming from! I said "children are taught in SCHOOLS to hate SMOKERS!" What does that have to do with hate crimes. ~sigh...........

Oh, brother. Every crime is a hate crime.
Perhaps you should rephrase that to "every violent crime is a hate crime". Vice transactions (gambling, prostitution, drugs, etc.) among willing participants do not involve hate.

Once upon a time many mothers to be smoked during pregnancy. Babies of all that I knew were born healthy and contine to be healthy. Such drummed up hysteria.
To: Madame Dufarge
The repeated implication here that this deranged nutball was any kind of representative of the "anti-smoking forces" has no more validity than the unsupported assertion by others that was an NRA member.
I urge you not to use a "straw man" argument, where your response to an argument is not to address the real issue, but to make some extremist nutball's version of the issue and make that your debate. You are trying to say that this nutball is anti-smoking, therefore the "anti-smoking forces" are nuts. This incident is about a lunatic with a gun, not about smoking.
Having said all that, can you really believe that smoking isn't dangerous to unborn children? Anecdotal stories ("I smoked and I was fine") are not relevant when the main effect is the increase of risk factors. I don't think anybody is saying that all mothers that smoke harm their children. The evidence does however show that the risk of occurence of some problems is increased.
For example, the danger might be that the risk of birth defect is 5% rather than 2%. If you don't consider that noteworthy, then address that.
So yes, if you wanted to smoke around my pregnant wife, I might feel inclined to say something. Please don't compare to to this guy.
To: wardaddy
Anyone comes around my 8 months preggers wife having a rare smoke when she's stressed to the bone and starts preaching about the evils of tobacco and I guess I'll have to shoot him/her on the spot premptively. I look forward to it...lol That was pretty much my husband's stance when I was pregnant. In fact he shut up more than one busy body with a few choice comments, that I will not repeat here :-)!!!!
Congrats on the forthcoming happy event.

Why should I move? Why don't you just put a bag over your head. That would answer both issues. You could breathE all the nasty smelling air you want, and I could have my fresh air. See....it's really quite simple.

I enjoyed reading your post.
I have a only one first cousin , who's husband thinks that all smokers are going to Hell. He, however drinks from the time he get's home from work and passes out in his recliner for the night.
As a smoker I was never made to feel welcome in their home. The previously let friends smoke in ther home. Then their children would make obnoxiou gestures and comments ( probably taught at school ) to the point I never stopped to see them again.
Now. of course it was their home and had every right to react as they did.
I was also my right to change my will . Their attitude cost them close to one million dollars.
When the will is read I'll bet they will wonder why. Oh, by the way , they are Liberals.
My other first cousin (Conservatives) and her husband used to smoke and still have ash trays in their home. They win the Lottery. Maybe my addiction is Political! Ha.
