Mother to surrender in videotaped beating of girl
09/21/2002
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - A woman seen on a department store security tape punching her 4-year-old daughter plans to surrender Saturday, her attorney said Friday night.
Police have been searching for Madelyne Gorman Toogood since Sept. 13, when a camera in a department store parking lot videotaped her punching and shaking her 4-year-old daughter.
The attorney, Stephen Rosen, said Ms. Toogood is on her way to Chicago and will surrender. She is charged with felony battery to a child.
Indiana police took the search nationwide Wednesday when they released the tape. "We want to get the girl the medical attention she needs," Police Chief Anthony A. Hazen said. "We want to get her to an emergency room and let them examine her."
Ms. Toogood is also wanted in Texas on at least two warrants. Fort Worth police said one warrant involves a shoplifting charge in March. Authorities in White Settlement, a Fort Worth suburb, issued an arrest warrant on an unspecified Class C misdemeanor.
Ms. Gorman's sister, 31-year-old Margaret Daley, who authorities say was present at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with failure to report child abuse.
Police received more than 1,000 calls about the video, which was first aired Wednesday night.
Staff writer Laurie Fox contributed to this report.
The same way you justify killing an attacker even though they were never convicted of attacking you.
Let's say you are walking down the street and a crazed man jumps at you with a knife. Do you wait until the judge renders a verdict before you defend yourself?
As for the 'beating', she was using an open hand, she was smacking the child - there's not doubt about this - and she should not have been doing it. I would take the bets being thrown around early in this that the child does no have any bruises.
The cries by the city officials to have this child brought in and examined at the emergency room is based on the same sensationalistic and over-reacting zeitgeist that so plagues our country today.
This woman needs anger management at best and deserves a visit by CPS at worst. I have to agree - having the government step in on this situation is preposterous and is only going to serve to hurt this family more than it will help.
Flame away. BTW, I'll rased six children, so I know a little about the way to discipline your kids.
I'm with ya on this - people are blowing this WAY out of proportion.
Video of this storyI clicked on your link and went right to the video. It requires RealOnePlayer. If you don't have it, go here to download it:
Has anyone been able to decipher a downloadable hard link of this file for the bandwidth challenged?
Now it will say Free 14 day trial. After a few days, just CANCEL the "Bells & Whistles" thing they want to charge you $10/month for. That's what I did and they didn't bill me anything and it still works at NO CHARGE to me.....
Also, here is another thread that has this video on post #19 and another on #50 (also requires RealOnePlayer):
Video of the Mother & daughter
If this doesn't help or if I misunderstood your post, please let me know......
Yeah, I can kill him if I'm the victim. The state can't until after the trial.

Come on -- are you really that naive? The only thing "shocking" about this "incident" was the fact that a camcorder was was at the right place at the right time -- a 6:00 News dream....
Wanna see something reeaaallly "shocking" and "outrageous"?? Why don't the networks smuggle out a video or two of Sudanese Christian children and innocent villagers getting hacked to death by Muslims? Naaah -- the media only reports what they deem a "story".
As a parent - and I do NOT have a parenting license - I happen to know that a child's bad behavior is best corrected when it happens, not in a discussion group a couple of weeks later or even at the dinner table, a few hours after the fact. I don't know what I would do if my kids made a scene in a public place. They happen to be rather well behaved and they never do that but, let's say they demand that I buy them some toy or candy and then throw themselves on the floor and start screaming and convulsing (I saw that happening in stores) I know that I would take the first opportunity to 'discuss' that behavior with the kid 'in private'. I have no idea why that woman was slapping her daughter around and THIS IS THE POINT. It's not clear either WHAT she was doing or WHY she was doing it. And, again, there are thousands or tens of thousands of similar 'beatings' if you want to call them this way, happending in this country every single day. Some parents are harsher than others and some go way over the line. Some kids need more discipline than others and some just won't respond to anything and are to see the death row soon after they turn into adults. Some parents kill their children and I believe I heard of children killing their parents. I also heard of children killing or dismembering or raping other children and of parents killing each other or other kids' parents.
I am sorry we live in an imperfect world but, I am sorry, a mother spaking her daughter while on camera is NOT national news except in this voyeuristic, brain-dead society of ours.
I'm just glad it had a happy ending.
Regrets and things left unsaid are soul killers.
There has to be punishment also, you left that out. I'd give her a year for each of those punches thrown.
