daisy, you have to love the old Dodger-Giants battles. The great event was when one of the Dodger pitchers hit Juan Marischal in the noggin in retribution for some earlier malfeasance of sportsmanship by Senor Marischal. Juan didn't charge the mound like all the ham and eggers did. He was Juan Marischal; with Latino style and flair and passion. He took his bat and hit Dodger catcher John Roseboro over the head with it.

Bad boys, bad boys watcha gonna do ...

I am impressed that you went to Gil Hodges house. I have read about him but was not following the Dodgers when they were in Brooklyn. Did you ever go to Ebbets Field? I went to Yankee Stadium one time and saw Maris and Mantle. And did you read Roger Kahn's other baseball book "Season in the Sun". I have not read that one but think I will put it on my list of Books to read real soon...So did you meet Roger Kahn when he signed your book or did you pay oodles of money for it on EBay, lol...

Julie it is always wonderful to see you. Thanks for sharing your day with us, sounds like you had fun. We didn't do anything much, except throw some steaks on the barbecue. Now I am listening to the fireworks out in the street. My poor little dog is so stressed. This holiday is very frightening for animals. :-(

If you get a chance, pop in tomorrow and say hello. Maybe others will come and tell us how they celebrated the 4th. :-)

Julie, everyone who is a baseball fan needs to go to Dodger Stadium for a game. It is a really different experience than going to Fenway or Wrigley ... but really unique and satisfying in its own way. Those night games when the sun is 4/5 down and the lights come on and it's 70 degrees and the colors of the ravine start to change ... it is really fun. Not as manic as Fenway or Yankee Stadium or Mets Stadium ... you don't feel crowded or hurried or anxious. That's fun too, but Dodger Stadium is not to be missed!

LOL! Well, that's good. Just like a cat - the epitome of calm. :-)

I wish I could reassure my little Doxie that nothing is going to happen to him. The more I try to comfort him the more worked up he gets. My husband is convinced that some of it is an act. He's probably right. LOL!

I don't remember that episode but I do recognize some of the names and I do remember the great pitching matchups between Drysdale and Koufax vs Marichal for the "big games".....I just love baseball trivia...Used to enjoy Dizzy Dean when he was a t.v. announcer for the Sat. games....Boy, could he tell some stories.....And Jerry Coleman is the announcer for the Padres (lordy he is way up there in age but still going strong); he played for the Yankees (but you knew that) and his career was interrupted when he went to War in WWII but he came back after he served our country and continued his career...He is very modest about his military career but I understand he was quite a hero in the War.....

Spent many a happy time at Ebbets Field with my Dad! I got to go to Hodges house on a Catholic school outing.....he was a devout Catholic.

No, I haven't read the other Kahn book but will look for it. I found the autographed copy of the "Boys" in a used book store a few years ago and got it for only $5.00!

Getting late here in the East so will have to say....Sweet Dreams to all :)

I remember watching a TV game in the late 60s between the Giants and Dodgers. It was a nasty game. Back then, these guys slid HARD when they broke up double plays. The Giants were getting the best of the Dodgers, Gaylord Perry was practically painting the ball with his goop, and the Dodgers were whining, Alston was whining, a couple of guys were thrown out of the game. Willie Davis was angry, he was going to be forced at third base easily and he charged in and slid spikes up into the Giants third baseman. Brawling and ill will ensued. Twice after as well.

Both teams were winners, both were elite, and they just didn't like each other. In those days, guys played with one team their whole careers. Feuds had long legs.

Got to say G'night now....time for my CA dreaming!

Julie, in my home town, you have to go inside a Dome to watch baseball. The stadium was built for football viewing, so the third base seats are directly facing the right field "baggie". You have to lean forward and turn to your right to see the plate. HUH??? ;^)

So, when I travel I try to get out to the outdoor stadiums to enjoy the experience. Dodger Stadium is my favorite. Busch is a close second. Wrigley is third. I don't like the new ones.
