Talarico leads Paxton by 3 points in Texas Senate race post-runoff poll

The Democratic candidate in the Texas Senate race has a slight edge over his Republican opponent in a new poll released Friday.

Forty-seven percent of likely general election voters in the state backed state Rep. James Talarico (D) in the poll from Texas Public Opinion Research, compared with 44 percent for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

Nearly a third of the respondents who voted for Cornyn in the runoff indicated in the poll that they will support the Democratic nominee in the November election. A plurality — 44 percent — of these voters said they will now choose Paxton, and 23 percent were undecided.

Of the Cornyn voters who said they will now back Talarico, more than half cited the criminal charges against Paxton and corruption concerns.

The Texas Public Opinion Research poll was conducted May 27-28 among 1,670 likely Texas voters and has a margin of error of approximately 2.8 percentage points.

Although it is hard to think of a worse candidate than Talarico, this race must be taken seriously. Any complacency and it is possible that Talarico could win, perish the thought. The RNC spent over $90 million in an attempt to defeat Paxton against Cornyn. Lets hope that they will spend at least this much to defeat Talarico, although I wouldn't bet on it.

Over 5 months to the election. A eternity in politics. The stage and situations can change for the ‘good’ or ‘bad’ from now.

Yea. Thats a poll but I think the election will be close to the results of Paxton win over Cornyn.

I can’t think of a worse canidate than Talarico to run in Texas.

Maybe California but not Texas.

This would be talarico’s best chance in polling

After a highly divisive partisan runoff primary election among republicans.

The fact that he leads only by three means he is doomed.

Republicans will come home. Cornyn voters will not vote for talarico.

The more people learn about him, the worse he will fare. Exposure is Talarico’s enemy.

Once the Paxton campaign exposes Talarico for his support of transgenders, Talarico’s popularity will hit the basement.

Most people know absolutely nothing about Talarico, the Gay Rector Rectum.

I do, because every Republican I know hates Paxton and think he is a creepy crook.

I myself also think so, but will still vote for him then promptly throw up, like I did when I voted for McCain.

The race is being framed as the hometown boy with down home Texas values vs. the corrupt career politician.

It cannot be allowed to remain that way. The sources exposing who Talarico is are just preaching to the choir - us conservative political junkies. This information has to go beyond that.

“Nearly a third of the respondents who voted for Cornyn in the runoff indicated in the poll that they will support the Democratic nominee”— you’d think that would be way more than a 3% plurality, unless some Dems are coming Paxton’s way or there were those not voting in primary who intend to in Nov. Anyway, sore feelings so close to the loss and that smalla lead should give Talarico little comfort, but good timing for a poll boost

I dug into the depths and details of this poll.

48% of respondents describe themselves as more liberal than conservative.

That is not an accurate Texas sampling.

About 21% had advanced graduate degrees— highly skewed left.

Talarico is doomed.

Trump is not that popular but he was able to beat Hillary and Kamala.

If it was someone else like Rubio, I think the ceiling is higher.

The point is that Paxton may be unpopular but he will win because his opponent is lame. Basically that's it.
