Emancipation Day may have run afoul of anti-woke sentiment.
Is Juneteenth being swallowed up – and swept away – by the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) movement? The nation’s newest federal holiday was meant to be a celebration of the end of slavery in America. It was never an LGBTQ holiday or general celebration of “marginalized communities.” Yet it seems some are trying to co-opt it – or culturally appropriate it, one might say – into the broader movement. As the tide of public and political opinion turns against DEI, however, will Juneteenth find itself washed away as well?
The Southern Poverty Law Center describes Juneteenth on its Learning for Justice website as a celebration of “marginalized communities’ resistance while underscoring a troubling truth: the historical perpetuation and ongoing exacerbation of racism and queerphobia in the United States.” That, however, is not a traditional interpretation of Juneteenth.
On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 aloud to the people in Galveston, TX. It read, in part: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed more than two years earlier, this was the first time many in this area had heard about it. Texans began honoring Juneteenth the following year, and, little by little, the tradition migrated to other parts of the South.
In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill declaring June 19 a federal holiday, but not everyone was in agreement. Some Republicans argued that it would cost too much for a historical event with which few were familiar. Then-Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) voted against the holiday, saying it would result in $1 billion in lost productivity.

I can hardly wait for Kwanza.
Juneteenth: Celebrate by thanking a Republican.
A couple of thoughts about ‘Juneteenth’. It’s important to remember that the slaves (for the most part) didn’t free themselves. And legalized slavery in the U.S. didn’t end on June 19. The Emancipation Proclamation only covered slaves in Confederate-controlled territory as of January 1, 1863. Slaves in Union states and slaves in Union-controlled Confederate states were not freed. Emancipation came with the ratification of the 13th Amendment.
It is also, to my mind, interesting to note the official name of this holiday because it speaks to the spirit of what was considered ‘normal’ back in ‘21. Tearing down statues, erasing history, kneeling for the national anthem, etc. etc.—”Juneteenth, National Independence Day”
If the Emancipation Proclamation were issued today, a Democrat federal circuit judge in Washington D.C. would decree it illegal and issue a stay against its enforcement.
My university closes for Martin Luther King Day, for Memorial Day, for Juneteenth, for the Fourth of July and for Veterans’ Day—but not for Washington’s Birthday or for Columbus Day.
On June 19, 1775, the Continental Congress commissioned George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.
Lincoln was not sure that the Emancipation Proclamation would hold up in court so he was very eager for the 13th Amendment to be ratified to settle the issue for good.
What happened in Texas, shoud have stayed in Texas. They mangled the number Nineteen and create another imaginary leftist holiday like Kwanza. Just another attempt to deconstruct and reformulate the United States.
A holiday to celebrate not going to work?
I see no reason why any other state should celebrate it or it should be celebrated on the national level.
No other state celebrates December 14, the date when Ohio was forced to take custody of Toledo as punishment for their unjust aggression against Michigan nor should they.
Blame the free blacks who owned over 4000 plantations. Track THEM down and demand reparations.

“ Also, “Juneteenth” sounds to my ear to be a completely illiterate rendering of a day.“”
Hell I just call it “Umpteenth”.
Makes about as much sense.
If it is, how long will it take for them to figure it out in Texas?
What’s most telling to me is that every personality or celebrity mentioning Juneteenth goes into the “horrors of the past”, and the “wrongs of America”, etc... making it a day of lamentation. Any REAL holiday about freedom and removing the shackles of your oppressor is always a joyful and happy celebration... July 4 has fireworks and picnics and camaraderie and community gatherings... “Juneteenth” doesn’t have any of that. It’s just another Leftist concoction to whine and revel in permanent victimhood.
‘The Southern Poverty Law Center describes Juneteenth on its Learning for Justice website as a celebration of “marginalized communities’ resistance while underscoring a troubling truth: the historical perpetuation and ongoing exacerbation of racism and queerphobia in the United States.”’
It floors me that groups like this, and many blacks, still consider the US to be systemically racist yet I see blacks marching with the “From the river to the sea” crowd that supports the annihilation of people based on race! Explain that to me.
My local bank and credit union are closed today in Alabama.
And no US mail.
