US withdraws from formal Ukraine peace negotiations

The United States will no longer mediate peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia after Vladimir Putin refused to sign up to a ceasefire.
The State Department said it is changing “the methodology of how we contribute” to the talks and will no longer “fly around the world at the drop of a hat” for meetings.
“We will continue to help, but we will no longer fly around the world as mediators in meetings,” said Tammy Bruce, a spokesperson.
She added that Kyiv and Moscow must now present “concrete” proposals for ending the war and should meet directly to resolve the conflict.
Washington withdrawing from peace talks came soon after the US signed a minerals deal with Ukraine on more favourable terms for Kyiv, while Donald Trump green-lit his administration’s first round of weapons deliveries to the war-torn country.

It is all okay. It was mentioned on this thread that it is quite unclear exactly what the support is for Ukraine and how when they make an announcement it needs to be clear so people do not misunderstand what was agreed upon.
This may be the problem here. Lately the media just mangles everything on purpose so that none of us know what is true anymore.

This is my first disappointment with Trump. I feel he was not truthful And it’s a BIG one too! He has shown himself to be bluster and hot air. “I’ll end the war in 24 hours.” Most expected him to declare the war Biden’s folly, and WALK AWAY the first week in office. Hand that turd over to the eu. But nooooo, his ego and having surrounded himself with questionable appointments has lead to this emerging debacle of chaos. By all appearances this goofy “mineral rights” deal just sinks us deeper into the Uke swamp. He isn’t half the brilliant deal maker his marketing portends.

That might be a false headline. I heard Zelensky say a few days ago that the Ukraine was ready for its next purchase of Patriot missiles, which are used to shoot down missiles coming from Russia. I would like to see what it being sent and who is paying/shipping it.
Also, the article stresses that 'Putin refused the treaty' but doesn't emphasize, 'Because Zelensky refused to agree to international declaration that territory that Russia occupies, including Crimea and Oblasts which were independent and under attack by Western Ukraine, becomes part of Russia.'
It takes two to tango; I think Putin Knows Zelensky/NATO would return to fighting for occupied territory and Putin wants the fighting to stop.

"The Kremlin has expressed a willingness for talks with Kyiv, but this week rejected a US peace proposal because it did not grant international recognition of the territory its forces seized in Ukraine."

Trump's first military shipment to Ukraine is spare parts for F-16s, likely because Ukraine never flew the the old rebuilt F-16's Europe gave them, aside from launching a missile at an uncontested promontry of land. Ukraine doesn't have the pilots to fly them and it doesn't have the modern/pristine air strips and air defenses needed to protect them. I believe some were already blown up parked on runways.
It's almost Trump trolling because Zelensky asked for these materials a long time ago and now that there's little of the 'fleet' left (I think about 6 were originally delivered to Ukraine by NATO), Trump sends the old dead F-16's for parts.

I feel he was not truthful.
You "feel" ?
He was truthful in that he tried very hard to bring peace between the two nations; was not within his power to force what they do not want. As if it is his fault Russia does not want to stop the war.

I think you are reading it correctly.
I would add, what’s a measly 50 million in this war in which as much as billion might have been in a week and at least averaged way over a billion a month. 50 million is a drop in the bucket.

ransomnote: I hope someone can post a 'real' article from the government because I don't trust media. I get an error message when I try to load a government article here: https://www.dsca.mil/press-media/major-arms-sales/ukraine-blanket-order-sustainment-us-army-supplied-systems
Also, I see in the excerpt below that these are funds Biden already appropriated (pushed through before Trump took office) and which I think Trump can't reverse. Ah but the press and the agitators are claiming Trump 'supports the war'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From Reuters via FreeMalaysiaToday press: US state dept okays possible arms sale to UkraineThis sale is an actual weapons deal whose principal contractors include Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, BAE Systems and AAR Corporation, the Pentagon said.
WASHINGTON:The US state department has approved the potential sale of F-16 training and sustainment, along with related equipment, to Ukraine for US$310 million, the Pentagon said on Friday.
Days before the deal, Ukraine and the US signed a deal heavily promoted by US President Donald Trump, to give the US preferential access to new Ukrainian minerals deals and fund investment in Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Ukraine has previously received F-16 jets from US allies under a jet transfer authorised by former President Joe Biden’s administration. Trump has not been as eager to assist Kyiv with weapons support, instead relying on transfers authorised by Biden.
Actually this Arms for Minerals deal was just approved by Congress and Trump signed off on it.
Owen posted: “The document seems to be an authorization to US defense companies to sell various defense items to Ukraine in the amount of $50 million.......and not sending US arms or tax dollars to Ukraine. The source of the $50 million for the buy is not mentioned. It could be EU money, from anywhere and defense mfg, Lockheed et al, are being authorized to take that money in return for shipping . . . not so much arms, but apparently services, as well.”
FYI-——The Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program is a US government initiative that provides grants and loans to foreign countries to help them acquire US defense articles, services, and training. It theoretically supports US foreign policy objectives by strengthening alliances, promoting regional stability, and contributing to the US defense industrial base.
FMF funding is appropriated by Congress through the Foreign Operations Appropriations Act and is managed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
As one example, In October 2023, the Joe Biden said Israel had nearly 600 active Foreign Military Financing (FMF) cases, totaling around $24 billion.
Israel has also historically been permitted to use a portion of its FMF tax dollars to buy weaponry
from its own Israeli defense firms—a benefit not granted to other recipients of US military aid.
Trump may be giving that selfsame benefit to Ukraine.
That’s not what the document said. It is a state department authorization. It is not a loan or a grant. It does not say loan or Grant. It’s authorization for defense companies to sell.
This is “the govt” that’s “authorizing”———
They can only authorize by adhering to a “process”
Congress delineated......... and enacted into law.
Time for NATO to send its sons and daughters to war.
US Marines are already in Estonia training with the Estonian military which has recently purchased US HIMARS. Romania bought them as well.
NATO is preparing for a ground war, and if ot proceeds it will be Russia, Russian block nations and North Korea against NATO.
Time for NATO to send its sons and daughters to war. I would say "Hell No!", to that.
Very specifically, I am opposed to any American sons and daughters moving out to war in the Ukraine.
Let the Europeans arm up and do another war with Russia. It is their continent at risk and their Russian neighbor putting them at risk. It is way past time for Europeans to deal with their own problems.
Oh right! They can't. Their military forces are too small and incompetently lead by too many unskilled commanders and dithering politicians. It would take them five to ten years to correct their problems even if they could find the money to do that. But they don't have enough time to change directions before they hit the wall. It sucks to be them.
We have our own quite serious problems we need to deal with first. We cannot fix the European problems right now. Or ever, really.
