Single moms need a better social safety net, not moralizing about marriage

Single-mother families make up one in five American families with children under 18. I grew up in one of them.

Solo parenting is no easy feat. Even though my Philadelphia childhood was filled with happy memories, we went through hardship, too. I remember how stressed my mom would get about making ends meet. In high school, while I spent hours on homework, she was in court fighting not to lose our house.

Too many single moms like mine face unnecessary economic insecurity that jeopardizes the wellbeing of their families. While some argue marriage is the best solution, what really uplifts single moms and their families are policies that support working women and foster a strong social safety net.

Many single parents — more than four-in-five of whom are single moms — serve as both their family’s sole breadwinner and caregiver. The rise in dual-income families, where both parents work, puts single-parent families at an income disadvantage and at higher risk of economic insecurity.

My new analysis for the Center for American Progress found that single moms work at higher rates than married moms. Despite that, 28 percent of single moms fall below the federal poverty line. Poverty rates are even worse for Black single moms, who make up almost 30 percent of all single moms in the country. And for the almost 16 million children in single-mom families, the risk of living in poverty can have deeply adverse effects.

Until government subsidizing, women for millennia would get married after their prospect had a means of supporting the wife and family. A woman has to be ready to stay home with their kids if needed. Or to pull any and all kids out of school if the kid is being abused and it taught that America is bad

A family needs to aim own real estate in short order

Nothing moral about it.

Most women have to get a career in order. Established, education complete, credentials established.

Before planning a wedding and marriage

As was always the case in decent society.

It’s a general post about working with what you have vs being pious and losing to the side that is 100x worse on that and all issues.

Ok, Isabela, let's cut to the chase. How much are we talking for each new kid...$4k or $5k or $6k per month? Don't hold back, after all, we have to help Daddy too... wherever he is. /s

I wonder if single moms to be or women getting abortions will ever realize that there are plentiful birth control methods available that actually prevent unwanted pregnancies?

How about making better life choices then begging for welfare when you F up?

We're encouraging this kind of behavior because the government gets to pay for it and they force men to pay up.

'making better life choices' has traditionally been the best 'social safety net' :-)

I agree, they don't need any moralizing. They also don't need my tax dollars. Unless I was an integral part of their decision to get knocked up, they have no business asking me to help pay for it.

The unmitigated gall of idiot women like this - "shut up and give me your money to pay for my stupid mistakes".

All of the single moms I have known the last few years get 200.00 hairstyles and nails very very regularly. The kids never see their dad or the money he sends while living out of his car or with his parents.
I learned the hard way.. heroines stay married. It’s much harder than sitting at the salon spending the kids cash.
Plus they pay zilch for medical, housing and care subsidies. Please.
I did without all of those things.. lived out of my car and regretted the pain we caused our children.
They have never recovered like kids in a healthy home.
This is Karl Marx ideology.. make women into working slaves or worse.

Yes, we’re seem to have a lot of these 100% or bust posts lately. Abortion is a major one despite the damage Linda Graham did during the 2022 midterms with his nationwide ban foolishness. The other day it was about Tulsi Gabbard’s second amendment views as if she’s the leading candidate to head the ATF. I don’t agree with her views, but right now she’s out there throwing haymakers for President Trump. Same with RFK Jr.

I think most of us get it that too many compromises and we’re no better than the GOPe, but we’re nowhere close to that. We need to get President Trump back in office and being absolutist isn’t going make that happen.

I was a single mom before the age of 19-and I can assure you that it isn’t always the woman who “f***s up”-ass**** dudes come in all ages, ethnic and economic groups. My cub’s father was a spoiled adult brat from a nice middle class Florida family who was in college here in Texas-he took off like a rabbit rather than be a parent-so I had the marriage annulled-lesson learned about faulty character assessment of guys...

And like many properly brought up independent young women, I didn’t beg anyone for anything but more hours at my job as a cocktail waitress, and I arranged my college classes accordingly. Fortunately, I come from a Hispanic family, and family comes first-so my cub had the best childcare-by family members. I never asked for or got one penny of welfare, no food stamps, no free/cheap govt housing, and my cub’s father never paid child support-left the state to avoid it. So please don’t tar us all with that weak sister whiny brush-it is not real-there are many, many self-respecting women like me.

I married a decent guy-an engineer-at 22, he adopted my cub as his and we were together for over 20 years. I’m glad if no female of your acquaintance has ever been a single mom. It is a hard role to play...

I know not all single moms wanted to be single. BUt a great many decided that is what they wanted. To knowingly become a single mother is a risky behavior. There are consequences (usually not good ones) when making that decision. Even the most well off single mom is not able to mitigate all the draw-backs.

The problem is an innocent party suffers because of a mom’s poor choice. Maybe instead of welfare for the mom a trust account should be set up (Just once. Not for each child) for the child. The equivalent (or less) of welfare payment would go in the account. I am not sure when it would be made available but the important thing is it would not be mom’s piggy bank. PS. The payments would end once the family reached a certain income level just like welfare would end.

No moralizing, you make choices in life and you live with the consequences. No sermons from me.

Actually, childless young women need better instruction on making poor decisions. Catch them BEFORE they become single moms.

Same with married women with children that are thinking of dumping their husband.

The Left wins by pitting Women against Men.

We are the two sides of the same coin - different sides.

Any Amendment telling you otherwise is lying to you.
