Single moms need a better social safety net, not moralizing about marriage
The Hill ^ | 08/30/2024 | Isabela Salas-Betsch

Single-mother families make up one in five American families with children under 18. I grew up in one of them.

Solo parenting is no easy feat. Even though my Philadelphia childhood was filled with happy memories, we went through hardship, too. I remember how stressed my mom would get about making ends meet. In high school, while I spent hours on homework, she was in court fighting not to lose our house.

Too many single moms like mine face unnecessary economic insecurity that jeopardizes the wellbeing of their families. While some argue marriage is the best solution, what really uplifts single moms and their families are policies that support working women and foster a strong social safety net.

Many single parents — more than four-in-five of whom are single moms — serve as both their family’s sole breadwinner and caregiver. The rise in dual-income families, where both parents work, puts single-parent families at an income disadvantage and at higher risk of economic insecurity.

My new analysis for the Center for American Progress found that single moms work at higher rates than married moms. Despite that, 28 percent of single moms fall below the federal poverty line. Poverty rates are even worse for Black single moms, who make up almost 30 percent of all single moms in the country. And for the almost 16 million children in single-mom families, the risk of living in poverty can have deeply adverse effects.

This is why the 19th Amendment was such a catastrophe; women vote for government to be their Sugar Daddy.

You are not wrong but it doesn’t matter if being “right” makes things 100x worse.
Say you are right and don’t like some issue Trump is more middle on. You, if a one issue short sighted republican voter, vote Harris or don’t vote at all. Harris gets elected and all things are 100x worse.
What did you accomplish? Dems seen to vote in monolithic blocks no matter what. More organized or bigger picture vision?

You wanted your “liberation” now you expect us every one to fix all the problems you’ve caused? No thank you. More and more will turn to onlyfans and when than inevitably blows up in their faces they’ll try to force everyone to “address” that issue too.

Communists destroyed the traditional family for just this reason. Female headed households are a burden on America. They are dependent on government. They vote for communism.
They demand that we subsidize their life. The sad truth is that if we cut them off government dole, they would find a man tomorrow to marry.

What a sense of entitlement.

Demanding more free stuff because of a situation they put themselves in.

And if you don’t agree, you’re a bad person.

Democracy is 50.5% women and 49.5% men voting on which sex should hand over their money to the other.

A better safety would only be a bigger incentive.
How about removing the safety net?

I was raised in a single parent home. By any means possible do not encourage it, my mother loves me but I had FAR too much time alone and we moved constantly with no male authority figure at all (long story.) Needless to say I ended up in trouble at times and I wish that upon no one. Raising children requires both mother and father for the benefit of all.

Isabela Salas-Betsch and her fellow church members can contribute all they wish to any single mothers they know. Or, they can contribute funds to the pregnancy crisis centers that help mothers keep their child, continue with their education, and get a job after the child is a year or so old.

Oh! She means Other People’s Money (OPM)! Well, she can start an organization (and take no salary) of volunteers to raise funds for single mothers. I understand the government gives great tax breaks for non-profit organizations that are all about a woman’s reproductive health.

I know single mothers have a hard time. I’d rather them keep their child than kill it for convenience. However, charity should be done by the private sector and done on a volunteer basis. Conservatives contribute way more to charity than liberals do. Liberals want to steal from your pocket to virtue signal their compassion. Conservatives quietly contribute to individuals or causes they support.

It’s not the government’s job to rescue people from bad choices or even bad luck in their lives. If government didn’t take so many of our dollars, more people would have funds to help out their neighbors when in need. That’s the way it should be.

Middle class women, even Republican women, vote for benefits for single moms out of self interest.

Why? Because they don’t want these women to get desperate enough to want to seduce THEIR men.

Consider the average single mom: generally under 40, many in teens or 20s. If these women really worked at it, did some exercise, got in shape, worked at improving attitude — they would be able to convince some 40-60yo guy to support them and their spawn in exchange for trying to be the perfect girlfriend.
