WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Thursday announced a sweeping antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of engineering an illegal monopoly in smartphones that boxes out competitors and stifles innovation.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New Jersey, alleges that Apple has monopoly power in the smartphone market and uses its control over the iPhone to “engage in a broad, sustained, and illegal course of conduct.”
The lawsuit — which was also filed with 16 state attorneys general — is the latest example of the Justice Department’s approach to aggressive enforcement of federal antitrust law that officials say is aimed at ensuring a fair and competitive market, even as it has lost some significant anticompetition cases.
Apple called the lawsuit “wrong on the facts and the law” and said it “will vigorously defend against it.”
President Joe Biden has called for the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to vigorously enforce antitrust statutes. The increased policing of corporate mergers and business deals has been met with resistance from some business leaders who have said the Democratic administration is overreaching, but it’s been lauded by others as long overdue.

Biden wants to take your iPhones!
I’m an iPhone user.
And I recognize that Apple steals a lot of ideas from Android phones.
Apple doesn’t have a monopoly on mobile phones.
I guess that’s why Samsung, Nokia, Pixel, Razr and Schok and all the others are going out of business.................
Also they are engineered so techs can’t work on them and therefore you have to buy a new one. Channel Louis Rossman.
I guess they rebuffed Hunter.
I don’t like Apple and never use their products, but I disagree that they have a monopoly on smart phones.
I dont worship Apple, but I have, use, and like the iPhone. That said, there are plenty of alternatives. I dont see any monopoly.
Apple’s payments not current?
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Apple won’t comply with DOJ demands to open locked phones for them?
Given the current ill nature of the government, that makes a lot of sense.
Nobody is forcing anybody to buy an Apple phone.
One of the biggest BS moves apple did was require a Mac to publish iPhone apps. This is why developers all of the sudden started using Macs.
Somebody didn’t pay off the right people in the District of Selective Prosecution of The Republican Enemy.
Last quarter smarphone market share for Apple was 61%. Next was Samsung at 22%. The rest were Google Motoroloa and others in the single digits. Apple is dominant but I wouldn’t say it’s a monopoly. If they get into the 90 percent plus range then maybe.
But of course Google doesn’t have a monopoly althought it controls 95% of all web searches?
The hypocrisy of the Left is never ending.
Exactly. This is absurd.
I can buy an Android and other things.
And, oh boy! - look who’s leading the way?!
“Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies violate the antitrust laws,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.
Does any rational human being think Mary Garland cares about consumers?
Anyone cheering this on is a statist.
Google and the leftists seek to destroy customer/individual privacy that Apple has been trying to uphold.
Google and the leftists / the "Swamp" of socialism / the "progressive" infestation of governments, seek absolute control and power over people, and the lawsuit is a mining expedition to see whatever left-wing lawfare can dig up and misrepresent.
PS. I do not own Apple stock.
Me with an Android: “Do tell”
