Kay Kingsman bought her very first home in the summer of 2021 — but now wishes she hadn’t.
Kingsman, a travel blogger based in Portland, Oregon, says she decided to buy since mortgage rates were low and she had plenty of money saved up from not traveling during the pandemic.
But — like many other pandemic homebuyers — she rushed into buying a home that didn’t fully align with her needs. And now she’s dealing with the consequences.

It’s been my family’s experience that the first house you buy isn’t ideal. The second house my parents bought was much closer to ideal, although not all the way there. And there were a couple of decades in between the purchases. She’s doing well to have a house at all nowadays.
She would have been smarter to buy an apartment to stsrt. Pay that off and then go buy a house.
I have bought a few homes.
I’ve been a landlord that sucked.
My home is where I live.
I don’t care if is an investment that will
make money. it is my home!
That is all I’m interested in.
Debt free and only property tax to worry about
Buy a camper and avoid property taxes
Don’t buy a house on an impulse.
What a concept…
If 75% of home buyers in the last three years are unhappy with their homes, then we should see a decent drop in prices soon.
I bought in 2021 and love my 1953 built cottage and I didn’t pay half a million dollars for it because I live in common sense land.
its easier to dupe people into anything than it is to explain to them they've been duped.
when was the last time a realtor or car salesman told you " You really dont need this? , what you have is what you need,Go home and think about it for a few weeks, make a list of pros and cons, then call me back, and we'll honestly go over your list and discuss it. ".
my father once talked me out of buying a kirby vacuum we really needed, needed like a hole in the head. Thanks dad for teaching me to call before i spend a lot of money.
Happy for you!We bought our second home when prices were reasonable, paid it off and now only pay the property taxes. Other than we wish we’d bought a ranch, we love this sweet 1984 house.
Dad always told me to buy a ranch style because I would get old some day and regret having stairs
He was right and now I am. Two short steps and I’m in
Stairs are not my friend
This article is hilarious:
—she doesn’t have a designated parking spot and has to resort to parking on the street”
Oh oh—she bought in the city of Portland.
—”her only priority had been to find a home that was close to her place of work, but wishes she had considered other factors, like updated plumbing and proximity to green spaces and trails.”
Antique plumbing is always fun—lol.
She was better off being far from green spaces and trails in Portland—now she has to travel a longer distance to get raped and mugged.
;-)
“Buy a camper and avoid property taxes”
in a few years you’ll only be able to buy electric campers. And some people will have the power of a switch to simply deactivate your vehicle at will.........
I think it’s understood pretty well that currently, EV’s are a toy and no functioning industrialized nation can sustain on it. sooooooo, to solve that problem, you’ll have to simply need permits and pay sin taxes etc.... to own traditional equipment.
i.e. only those who are approved will own portable gas generators.
EVERYTHING will be controlled and rationed. It’s not that they don’t want fossil fuels, it’s that they want it for themselves and for their uses. we the people will be fully electric, which will be powered by govt owned fossil fuels
I had a Kirby salesman make an appointment with my wife to “vacuum our house”. I told my wife I’d handle this salesman. When she came home she found I had been sold the Kirby. Best $600 I ever spent. That dang thing lasted 30+ years.
Well I upgraded my paid for house (moved 1/2 mile) and still very glad I did. While not a ranch the MB is on the ground floor, as one freeper implied that’s very important for seniors.

That sure sounds like a lucrative job.

That is my view. The increase value of my home is meaningless unless I sell and I don’t plan on selling.
One part of my retirement plan was to have the house paid off. Homes like mine around here rent for for $1,200 a month. By not paying rent it is like having an income of $14,400 tax free a year.
Maintenance, insurance and taxes are no where near that much.
She lives in Portland, Oregon. Bad start right there. Obviously, lifestyle decision making isn’t her forte.
Local newspaper reports some softening in real estate prices...driven by low inventories of houses on the market
Expect this to be Trump's fault shortly.
I think I’ll start looking at foreclosures. The problem with those properties is that their former residents tend to leave an awful mess when they finally vacate the premises. Can you imagine? They barely qualify in the first place and when they can’t hold up their end of the agreement, they use vandalism to make their statement. IMO, they should be prosecuted for it and locked up for 30 days.
Meanwhile, 80% of buyers also compromised on their priorities, like finding the right location. Some bought fixer-uppers, while others made offers without even seeing the properties in person.
They can't have been living on the street before 2020-21, so why did they choose to buy a house under the circumstances? Social contagion?

Well said.
The place we disliked the most was one we bought because it was smart and logical.
I had a friend whose husband forbade her to hang pictures in the house because he didn’t want to repair holes when they sold the house. They lived there for at least 10 years (that I know of).
Love your house. Live your life.
