QUEEN CLEOPATRA: Netflix sued by Egyptian lawyer for blackwashing history
Greek city times ^ | 20th April 2023

An Egyptian lawyer has filed a case with the Public Prosecutor to close the Netflix platform after the trailer of “Queen Cleopatra" was released, which depicts the Greek historical figure as a black-skinned woman.

According to Egypt Independent, Mahmoud al-Semary demanded that all legal measures be taken against those responsible for the documentary and the management of the streaming platform for its participation in “this crime.” He also called for an investigation and for Netflix to be blocked in Egypt.

The complaint submitted against the streaming platform said that "most of what Netflix platform displays contradicts Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones."

It added that the platform displayed advertisements that attracted millions of people in the world to watch the documentary Queen Cleopatra, who was of Greek origin depicting her as black woman, unlike Egyptian history and civilization.

The case said that the documentary promotes Afrocentrism that is widely spread on social media, which have slogans and writings aimed at distorting and obliterating the Egyptian identity.

The complaint continued addressing Public Prosecution: "In order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world and take pride in it, and to consolidate the spirit of belonging to the homeland, and accordingly we ask and seek you to take the necessary legal measures against this platform."

It demanded stopping broadcasts showing all works aimed at obliterating and distorting the Egyptian identity, through films aimed at falsifying and distorting history in Egypt.

The complaint accused makers of the documentary and platform management of forgery.

If Cleo were black, would Julius Caesar?

Arguing that Cleo was black would even Shaka Zulu.

A lot of what passes for "black history" is actually mighty thin gruel. They never cease to "puff up" their résumés history. Lately it's been claimed that the Negro didn't even invent peanut butter.

Many years ago, I found a book (in a University library!) that had been published by one of the Black Supremacist groups.

It contained pictures and drawings of various Egyptian monuments, statues of Pharaohs, etc., that were characterized as ‘proof’ that the ancient Egyptians were Black.

Most of the pictures were misattributed, and anyone with any attentive interest in ancient Egyptian art would have seen that. The book was just propaganda.

A lot of people think a lot of things. Doesn’t mean it’s worth the time of day.

I had to look that up.

Wiki has a long but interesting article about melungeons.

It’s wild that they had so many categories for mixed racial people down south.

I guess it’s kind of like Cajun, a mixture that results in beautiful and talented people.

I think Ava Gardener has been thought to have had a Melungeon background, as well as Abraham Lincoln.

If you look up old pictures of Melungeons, they do tend to be very attractive, with especially lovely eyes.

(I think there are Melungeon websites, now.)

Speaking of “puffed up”, I am still mildly amused that it can’t be just ‘Martin King’, it has to be “The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior’

13 syllables instead of 3

I watched that movie again last year. It’s awfully dated.

We need a new one.

Actually, according to the Bible the Egyptians and the Blacks had a common ancestor, Ham. However, the Egyptians were by no means sub-Saharan — and this is what upsets the Blacks, who desperately want claim to some great civilization. Therefore, they’ll “blackwash” anything for the sake of self-esteem.

I don’t think Taylor made a very convincing Cleopatra. Historical commentators tell us that the Queen wasn’t really beautiful at all - she ensnared men by her charm, wise ways, and theatricality, instead; and she was apparently highly educated.

There must be somebody who would make a good one in a new blockbuster movie...

He’s talking about Netflix and their programming, in general, not being compatible with Islam.

Egypt had the Nile River with its rich farmland and, more importantly, the Mediterranean Sea. Natural Resources and access to trade — a winning combination for prosperity.

Sub-Saharan Africa had few navigable rivers or ocean harbors. They were screwed.
