California Tries to Close the Gap in Math, but Sets Off a Backlash Proposed guidelines in the state would de-emphasize calculus, reject the idea that some children are naturally gifted and build a connection to social justice. Critics say math shouldn’t be political.
But ever since a draft was opened for public comment in February, the recommendations have set off a fierce debate over not only how to teach math, but also how to solve a problem more intractable than Fermat’s last theorem: closing the racial and socioeconomic disparities in achievement that persist at every level of math education.
The California guidelines, which are not binding, could overhaul the way many school districts approach math instruction. The draft rejected the idea of naturally gifted children, recommended against shifting certain students into accelerated courses in middle school and tried to promote high-level math courses that could serve as alternatives to calculus, like data science or statistics.
The draft also suggested that math should not be colorblind and that teachers could use lessons to explore social justice — for example, by looking out for gender stereotypes in word problems, or applying math concepts to topics like immigration or inequality.

Ignoring the Bell Curve has bad consequences.
I have relatives who taught school in Africa. They say African blacks hungered for school. Their students walked 3-5 miles and the school had no electricity. But they CAME.
We suffer from a cookie cutter mentality in matters of pedagogy. If we could identify learning strengths at an early age, the course of education could be adjusted per child. We should never aim for the same results, nor should education be strictly about utility in any case. Public schools have been doing it wrong for decades, as our growing idiocracy bears out.
You cannot reject the concept of naturally gifted students, What should be at the heart of education is encouraging the natural gifts and assisting the student to develop as far as they can. The comments on this thread demonstrate how many unexpected consequences — including bridge failures and the fall of civilization — if we do not prepare the next generation in all the educational criteria.
Some folk will go farther and some will reach a limit to their ability to understand some concepts. All part of the natural scheme. What is CA trying to do? I could not go back into this educational system as it stands, and it is the source of all systematic racisism.
Ha, ha, they aren’t trying to close the gap. They’re trying to hide it.

I did it all in my head but I think the answer is $187.11. Question did she turn two tricks each at 56.12 or was that combined?
If your IQ is 85, you’ll never master fractions or long division...fifth grade level. Making change is the very best that can he hoped for.
The average black IQ is 85. The average hispanic IQ is 87. That means half of them have an IQ lower than that.

Here’s my modest proposal for education reform.
We have been discussing ways to fast track kids through high school to avoid the liberal agenda and other idiocies:

Your daughter should just skip high school altogether and start taking classes at her local community college. High school is a joke. Always has been.
Thanks RACPE. This would be appalling, but the past two calendar years have been so appalling, my threshold for appalling has risen, or my meter has just burned out.
What about collegiate basketball? What about the NFL? Shouldn't they also be forced to comply with racial quotas so as to proportionally reflect actual demographics in the U.S.?
Regards,
It’s a forbidden topic. Totally out of bounds. Thousands of words about the “mystery” of math by demographic group, not one honest answer.
Then we watch the NFL, NBA, etc, and we are not supposed to draw any conclusions there either.
seems like a good update for the tagline thread

I found that when I took calculus, I really, really learned algebra.
++++++
The same experience I had. I personally think that the difficulty of calculus is overrated but I agree that to be good at it you need to really master algebra. It needs to be automatic. Algebra mistakes become calculus mistakes otherwise. And there is a lot of algebra in calculus.
Everybody knows the answer, most whites being on average kind and generous don’t like it, and they absolutely would revolt before making an issue out of it.
America being a new thing in history and with politics built around the last two weeks has been blindly sinking for a long time now, such that buildings and bridges are collapsing, only tunnels and other structures built >100 years ago are safe, and the largest public health problem since 1918 (I presume we disagree about that) is managed less well than in Subsaharan Africa.
