Common cholesterol drug reduces risk of COVID death by 40%, study finds

The most common cholesterol-lowering drugs may improve hospitalized COVID-19 patients’ chances of survival and reduce their risks of progressing to more severe disease, a new study suggests.

An analysis of more than 10,000 people admitted to more than a 140 hospitals across the nation found that a class of medications called statins, together with blood pressure drugs, reduced in-hospital COVID-19 death by 40% among those who took them prior to being admitted. The same held true of COVID-19 patients’ odds of severe disease: those only taking statins benefited from a 25% lower risk of developing severe disease and those taking blood pressure medications had a 11% lower risk.

The findings applied primarily to those with high cholesterol and high blood pressure, mostly because people with such health conditions are more likely to take these medications to help treat them.

The reduced risk of death was slightly higher for those taking statins alone (46%) compared to people only taking high blood pressure medication (27%).

This is rather interesting.

One of the methods of action from statins is reducing inflammation. That same action has been linked to why some drugs appear to give relief to the symptoms of covid though they are not antivirals.

On a personal note, I am on a stain for hereditary high cholesterol. When I had the vid, the only symptom was loss of smell.

I had a very mild case of COVID last November. I am on statins AND blood pressure meds. I am 64, in pretty decent physical shape, but coronary by-pass surgery at the end of 2017 and type II diabetes. So I have plenty of known weaknesses to COVID. Could be something to that.

Combine it with Ivermectin and the HCQ/Zinc/Zpac, and you may have something. But it has to be given early, and based on risk factors.

Yeah no thanks. Statins started eating my muscles. This reminds though, I should get grapefruit juice.

Another concern with statins is peripheral neuropathy damage over time. I took Lipitor(atorvastatin) almost 5 years and noticed my legs and feet getting progressively worse, burning so bad some days I had to stay out of work. As a test I eased off the Lipitor and noticed some slow improvement. The dead nerves will never recover but glad I caught it.

I was sad because the drug really had a positive effect but I just could not walk or stand some days. Side effects obviously don’t affect everyone the same but just something to watch for.

Statins eat up CoQ10.
If you are on statins, try adding CoQ10 supplements daily.
Even Costco sells them over-the-counter.

If Covid doesn’t kill you, statins will.

My wife took statins for a couple of months. Began having pain in her shoulders. Got to where it was hard to lift her arms above her shoulders. She stopped taking the statins and some of the pain went away. 10 years later, she is almost back to normal.

That is why she refuses to take the vaccine. She’s afraid of a bad reaction. I took the vaccine. Ex-military and have been vaccinated for lots of weird stuff in my life.

I’d be leery of statins, though. OTOH, I don’t have diabetes, and diabetes is a severe risk factor for COVID.

Why the concern over covid deaths? It is just a another flu, killing less than 0.1% healthy people. Just ignore the Chinese virus and get on with it.

Statins have terrible side effects for many people.

My ex-doctor damn near ruined me with zocor.

It took over three years for my feet and legs to fully recover.

My doctor’s office has placards all over the walls pushing statins. I have strange cholesterol readings, low in HDL but also low in LDL. I will not take statins. Daily treadmill & weights in gym is a much better option to avoid heart disease.
