In the Name of Equity, California Will Discourage Students Who Are Gifted at Math
Reason ^

Posted on 05/04/2021 12:38:01 PM PDT by MNDude

All students deserve powerful mathematics; we reject ideas of natural gifts and talents," reads a bulletpoint in chapter one of the framework. "The belief that 'I treat everyone the same' is insufficient: Active efforts in mathematics teaching are required in order to counter the cultural forces that have led to and continue to perpetuate current inequities."

The entire second chapter of the framework is about connecting math to social justice concepts like bias and racism:

Isn’t an IQ less than 65 considered retarded?

Nature verse nurture. I’ll believe it as soon as someone teaches my cat algebra.

Well, then, if they're right, they are doing the right thing.

If, OTOH, you "believe in science", then you know they are wrong.

At higher levels, math becomes increasingly abstract, and only a very few can understand it. There is no equality.

Huh? At what level does it become too abstract to understand? Calculus? Differential equations? Calculus of variation? Vector and matrix operations?

The whole beauty of math is it is color blind, objective not subjective.

Great. Those of us who are good at math can make even more bucks.

I have posting about your posted reality whenever someone posts these stories of bad school, bad math and bad science.

That means more job security for our adult offspring, those in college now and those who will be ready for college soon.

Just make all the asians and smart white kids play football until they get cognitive decline from the head traumas, then everybody can be “equal”.

#10: "Isn’t an IQ less than 65 considered retarded?"

IQ 55 to 70 is termed "Educable Mentally Retarded", a person with a mild or moderate to high mental retardation who could learn to the 5th grade level.

“Those of us who are good at math can make even more bucks.”

Not quite. Those people from India or China who are good at math can make slightly more bucks than they would in their home country, while we get screwed.

“All students deserve powerful mathematics; we reject ideas of natural gifts and talents,”

Sounds like they’re rejecting reality. According to them, everyone could play a professional sport, if only they had good coaches. Everyone could become a professional musician, a world-class artist if they were just taught correctly.

Or is it, that math is the one area of human endeavor where natural gifts and talents don’t apply? The stupid that is being proclaimed with a straight face is tiresome.

Math classes will become increasingly difficult and weed out those who cannot understand the material, it varies from person to person.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded here and there, now and then are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as “bad luck.”

Excerpt omitted the first paragraph:

“California’s Department of Education is working on a new framework for K-12 mathematics that discourages gifted students from enrolling in accelerated classes that study advanced concepts like calculus.”

They are going to “solve” the problem of racial disparities in performance, by crippling the education of bright kids who are not rich enough to go to private schools.

The real purpose of the policy is to reduce competition for the children of elites.

“At what level does it become too abstract to understand?”

Well, wrapping your head around quaternions is a bit of a doozy. I know they work, but I don’t think I could quite explain to you why they work...
