I own a grocery store in Northern Michigan. Or I did until today. 80% of my staff just quit because the CARES Act pays them more for sitting at home than to come into work. I pay them on average $600-700 per week. The CARES ACT will give them 80% of that (regular Michigan unemployment 480-560) plus an additional $600 through the cares act. So $1100 to sit at home or $600 to come to work.
But if they quit they don't get unemployment right?
Wrong the CARES ACT says if the employee is uncomfortable working because of the Covid-virus they qualify for unemployment.
No use putting out a help wanted sign, I can't complete with what the governments (state and federal) are paying them.
I am one of 3 grocery stores in the county. Say hello to the food shortage!
(Just talked to one of the other stores, His staff is grumbling about the same thing. Haven't walked yet but it would not surprise him.)
It does NOT matter. You can quit and still get benefits!!
From STATE of MICHIGAN/CARES ACT web site
Provide self-certification that the individual is otherwise able to work and available for work under state law, except the individual is unemployed, partially unemployed, or unable to work because:
The individual has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and is seeking medical diagnosis
A household member has been diagnosed with COVID-19
The individual is providing care for a household member or family member who has been diagnosed with COVID-19
The individual has a child or other person for whom the individual has caregiver responsibilities and the child/other person is unable to attend school or another facility as a direct result of the COVID-19 public health emergency and that school/facility is required for the individual to work
The individual has quit his or her job as a direct result of COVID-19
SEE last Line that is quite inclusive. (i.e. I am to scared I might get covid working in a grocery store)
Yes, I am referring to those who warned that this would happen and were told to stifle their objections and vote for the Bill anyway.
I remain amazed that politicians have the conceit that they can ignore the laws of economics.
$2000 MORE????
Graham was raising the alarm bells over this and he was told to shut up!! This was a Dem move without it they would not pass the bill!! Graham wanted to make everyone equal to where they were but NOT where they made more!! Dems had a hissy fit and threatened not to approve the bill these bastards WANT businesses boarded up they dont give a damn!!
How damn old is her computer that it’s not compatible with Geico’s ancient VPN?
Graham raises the bell on a lot of things, but never does anything. Did he end up voting for the Bill anyway?
Tell your daughter to get on line and apply for a grocery job MOST are union have GREAT health benefits great wages AND they are begging for people right now!! I just retired from Vons/ Safeway Corp. was making 21.00 an hour I think starting right now is $16.00 an hour!!
I have no idea. It’s a PC, that’s all I know. I’ve used Macs all my life.
Also, just so you know - a lot of companies *won’t* be ‘going back to work’. The pandemic has shown them that remote work is the way forward.
At those companies, anyone not able to remote work/work from home is going to be first on the chopping block (if there is one) when the shutdowns are over. I hate to tell you this at this time, but you probably want to do whatever is needed to get your wife set up to work from home.
Thanks for the info...I’ll definitely pass it on.
Well on that note you are wrong.........
If you can remote from home, somebody from half-way around the globe can remote just as easily as you.
See my latest post to you above. You should probably find out.
I’m in IT. If need be, you can private message/FRMail me the requirements and a description of the problem it has connecting plus the specs of her machine, or what info you can get, and I might be able to tell you what to do. No charge for the advice.
You’d think that and it’s been tried, but it turns out to be a minefield. Didn’t work out well for a lot of companies recently - accountability issues. Local people working from home seems to be the way forward.
It’s my son’s wife, but they can’t afford to buy a new computer at this time. My son still has medical bills from last year. He told me the other day that he was able to get a month’s deferral on his car loan, and some other bills while they wait for their stimulus checks. And he also told me that they had a bad hail storm in Carmel, Indiana the other day, and his front windshield got cracked. He hasn’t got the $500 deductible to get it fixed. I will offer the money to him, but he will probably turn me down. It’s always something. The poor kid can’t get a break.
Seems like if they are asking her to work from home, they MUST have some tech employees or consultants, who could work with her on getting computer access. The employer should either provide a computer or, at a minimum, the technical support to enable her to actually work.
JMHO
Thanks...I’ll try to call them about it, and see what they say.
He needs to ask his car insurer about the windshield. Some will replace without any out of pocket (might just be for rock chips, but.... he should ask).
Bless you for your kindness.
Thank you
