CARES ACT shuttering grocery stores
Vanity | 4/16/20 | Freeze

Posted on 04/16/2020 11:48:52 AM PDT by Freeze923

I own a grocery store in Northern Michigan. Or I did until today. 80% of my staff just quit because the CARES Act pays them more for sitting at home than to come into work. I pay them on average $600-700 per week. The CARES ACT will give them 80% of that (regular Michigan unemployment 480-560) plus an additional $600 through the cares act. So $1100 to sit at home or $600 to come to work.

But if they quit they don't get unemployment right?

Wrong the CARES ACT says if the employee is uncomfortable working because of the Covid-virus they qualify for unemployment.

No use putting out a help wanted sign, I can't complete with what the governments (state and federal) are paying them.

I am one of 3 grocery stores in the county. Say hello to the food shortage!

(Just talked to one of the other stores, His staff is grumbling about the same thing. Haven't walked yet but it would not surprise him.)

Stupid question, but how do they Qualify of you didn’t lay them off in the first place?

Sounds like they committed Job Abandonment which would disqualify them from any Unemployment Compensation.

Republicans voted for this bill and Trump signed it.

Government creates Meng perverse incentives like this. It destroys lives and at some point will destroy the entire economy

“I think the $1200 for everybody was the focus for most people. They wanted this bill passed asap. 2.2 trillion didn’t even seem to bother many.”

Everybody does not get $1200 but yes Democrats passed that bill in the House in the blink of an eye.

-- Somebody should have warned us that this would happen. --

LOL. What good would that do?

I presume you are tounge in cheek here. Lindsey Graham made a big stink of exactly this, then voted for the package anyway. Mnuchin blames the states for having old WC computer systems that couldn;t adapt to the situation, so the one size fits all amount was advocated.

Let’s see they quit today, April 16...their state opens up for business again on May 1...just 2 weeks of sitting at home getting taxpayers money and then they are out of luck...They will be cut of as of May 1st...

They will be expected to get a job at that time and will be no longer under the Cares Act...

On May 1st they will have to admit they quit their job and they will not be eligible for unemployment because their employers will be expected to take them back at that time...because of the SBA rules for loans etc...

They have a job waiting for them they wont get unemployment and the Cares Act money will be cut off when the state opens again...

at least I think that’s how it will work...

Only people who get the Wu Hu Flu will be exempt from the rules...they have a valid excuse to cease working...

The federal $600 is guaranteed through 7/31. No way it doesn’t get funded through election day.

Wait until food workers and delivery truck drivers hear about this. Can you imagine what happens when that critical link decides it’s time to participate in the lockdown?

My son's wife works for Geico in Indiana, and was sent home from work like everyone else. She has no time on the books because she used it all up taking him to chemo treatments, and doctor appointments all last year. She gets nothing, and has told me she is not eligible for unemployment, because basically she still has a job. Some people have been set up to work from home, but her computer isn't compatible with Geico's system, so she's out of luck there too. My concern is that when they do allow people to go back to work, she won't have a job, because big corporations will look every-which-way to eliminate jobs in an attempt to recoup their losses.

My son has been out of work off and on for over a year now. He works for Geico too, but is now receiving minimum disability because of his surgery, chemo, and neuropathy side effects he is still experiencing in his hands and feet caused by the chemo. He's applied for Social Security disability, but that takes forever, and he'd really prefer to be able to go back to work. He tried going back last year while going through chemo. The first time he got bronchitis, and the second time he got a blood clot in his lung, caused by the chemo. He tried to go back at the end of last year after his treatments ended, but the neuropathy got even worse after the chemo ended. The doctor had warned him about it, and told him it may never go away. The other thing that concerns me about his going back to work is that during his surgery for cancerous polyps last year, they took out about 75 lymph nodes, which means his immune system has been compromised, and since you don't grow back lymph nodes, I'm assuming his system will be compromised for the rest of his life. He's 49.

I've been paying their rent and other things for them since last year. I don't mind. I wouldn't do it if I didn't want to, but I worry about his wife not having a job when this is all over. She's worked in retail before, but those jobs don't pay much, and are based on commission. They were doing so well before my son's cancer, and I pray every night that their lives can get back to normal sometime soon. I'm in New York State, and try to visit once or twice a year. My oldest son lives in Troy, New York, and has been working from home since the lockdown, so at least he's still got a paycheck coming in.

I’ve got a question. How long is one eligible for the benefits from this act? Surely they can’t expect it to last forever, and they’ll eventually have to go back to work. I don’t understand why people, when given the option of a steady, stable job, will walk away for instant gratification. It boggles my mind, but then I’m old, and started working at the age of 16. We were taught the work ethic very early in our lives.

They’ll still have to pay taxes on that unemployment won’t they?
