CARES ACT shuttering grocery stores
Vanity | 4/16/20 | Freeze

Posted on 04/16/2020 11:48:52 AM PDT by Freeze923

I own a grocery store in Northern Michigan. Or I did until today. 80% of my staff just quit because the CARES Act pays them more for sitting at home than to come into work. I pay them on average $600-700 per week. The CARES ACT will give them 80% of that (regular Michigan unemployment 480-560) plus an additional $600 through the cares act. So $1100 to sit at home or $600 to come to work.

But if they quit they don't get unemployment right?

Wrong the CARES ACT says if the employee is uncomfortable working because of the Covid-virus they qualify for unemployment.

No use putting out a help wanted sign, I can't complete with what the governments (state and federal) are paying them.

I am one of 3 grocery stores in the county. Say hello to the food shortage!

(Just talked to one of the other stores, His staff is grumbling about the same thing. Haven't walked yet but it would not surprise him.)

My wife’s company has had many lower paid employees decide not to come to work since unemployment pays them about $2,000/month more than what they would earn working.

If there’s anything government is good at it’s creating unintended consequences. But then maybe I’m a moron for thinking that these consequences are unintended.

“Somebody should have warned us that this would happen.”

That was out there from the “git-go”. Everyone knew this would happen.

"since unemployment pays them about $2,000/month more than what they would earn working."

Just to make sure I got that ... you mean: since unemployment pays them about $2,000/month, COMMA, more than what they would earn working.(?)

... not that it pays them 2000 a month over and above paying them what they would be making if they were working. Right?

When I read about the CARES Act, I knew this would happen. The Democrats in Congress did not care and do not care about the impact on business nor the consumer. They just went ahead and jammed that stupid stimulus through Congress.

Think about the numbers: A $12.50/hour employee makes $2,000 before taxes each month. On unemployment in Colorado, they get about $1600 ($400/week) for unemployment insurance, plus $2,400 from the feds ($600/week) for a grand total of $4,000.

Work: $2,000.
Unemployment: $4,000.

I think this is all part of a grand plan.

People that will accept the temporary governmental stipend , rather than a job and permanent income , regardless of the money - is a pathetic loser and not worth employing ! I’ve often said as a contractor , who has employed hundreds if not thousands of people of all walks of life, there are two types of people in this world One that likes to work ; and one that doesn’t As somebody who has employees that we need to 1-depend on 2- show up 3- not wine and make excuses and 4- not steal and 5- not lie you know what I’m talking about The best employees are the ones that you can not supervise , not pay any attention to , and when you come back - they got everything you expected them to do plus more! Here’s to good workers of the world 🌎! You know who you are !

Things were doing well for more and more people under Trump.

Can’t have that.

The powers that be, deepstate, globalists, have been working for decades to destroy america’s middle class. That’s what sets places apart to be able to reign in governments. They have enough manpower and means to do so.

Trump was bringing more people into the middle class, or at least making more and more people better off, on the whole. His ideas are largely more pro-america, america first, in dealing with govt and private corporations.

Can’t have that.

So this is how a weak disease is exploited. sympathetic libtard media, deepstate players directing it, state level totalitarian lackeys, scientists with bullsh11te models ofmepic proportion fakery numbers

and 24/7 propaganda to scare the living sh11te out of people so they go along with all their guaranteed rights and liberties being blown out the door, likely not to be returned.

Merry Phrucking Christmas.

If they quit the are notcelegalble for unemployment when the letter come to you to verify them being furloughed you need to make sure you take the time to fill out every damn one of them saying they walked off the job and were NOT furloughed!! If you don’t take the time to do this they WILL GET the unemployment this is BS and you have to do your part so this does not happen to other business owners!!

I do not think everyone who just quits and is scared will get unemployment. Maybe it depends where you live
https://www.dol.gov/coronavirus/unemployment-insurance

“My employer has remained open because it is essential. I’m not sick, nor is anyone in my household sick. I do not have children or care for someone who cannot care for themselves. However, I’m afraid of getting coronavirus from customers coming to the store, so I quit and filed for unemployment. Can I obtain benefits under the CARES Act?”

No. Under the CARES Act, you may be eligible for benefits if you meet one of the circumstances listed in the Act, but none include the scenario described. On these facts, you are not eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) because you do not meet any of the qualifying circumstances.

This is not good. This will stall the economy getting back on its feet.

It was reported that the $600 extra per week was in the bill before it passed. So it should be no surprise. Some objected but it stayed in the bill. I did not know that people who ‘quit’ their jobs were eligible. Of course many people will quit their jobs.

I think the $1200 for everybody was the focus for most people. They wanted this bill passed asap. 2.2 trillion didn’t even seem to bother many.

Not good.

You had my sympathy until you posted this.

You're a business owner, aren't you?

1. Put out the "Help Wanted" sign.

2. Hire new staff at the higher wages.

3. Raise your prices to cover the higher cost of doing business.

4. Never let the old employees come back.
